23.01.2022 Thanks you Shirley for sending a photo of your named and registered Spuria iris introduction. 'Just Janelle' ( Shirley Sylvia, R. 1996) Seedling #1. SPU, 46" (117 cm). Midseason bloom. Standards cream honey; falls honey overlaid gold, lighter toward edge, bronze veining in shade; buds bronze. 'Imperial Bronze' X 'Big Cloud'. Tempo Two 1997/98.

12.01.2022 A couple of Spuria iris showing three blooms. One can expect 3-5 blooms per stem but three generally make a nice balanced show stem.

11.01.2022 A selection of Spuria iris flowering now and a bit of information regarding this member of the iris family They normally come into flower in the middle to end of the tall bearded season depending on the individual varieties’ flowering times. Tall, stately with beautiful straight foliage up to 1.5 metres and neat tailored flowers on top so great for a background planting. They enjoy full sun and good drainage and grow well in our area. Unlike tall bearded they can have a side... dressing of composted animal manure and commercial fertilisers annually as the are quite heavy feeders. They have very few pest or disease concerns other than ants and aphid, the ants harvesting the honeydew from the aphid however they should be kept on the dry side as they don’t like extended wet feet. Once planted they can remain up disturbed for many years, mine have been in the same spot for thirty plus years. They are a very tough rhizome that is planted below a good couple of inches below soil level and at least three feet apart if growing more than one variety in close proximity. They will gradually go dormant when foliage can be cut away to re-emerge in early spring. These days there are very few newer varieties offered in nursery catalogues probably as they are not as easily marketed as tall bearded Iris but they are well worthy of a spot in every garden. There are several members of SGC growing Spuria iris. See more
