25.01.2022 A few of our Zinnias happily rippening in our garden

24.01.2022 Buy in bulk and save the add said. Then I discover they are selling dried fruits online in 100g packets. Then just to rub salt in... If you paid $54.90 per kilogram for apricots it was only going to cost you $35 to post them. So I'm thinking people probably should know the prices of stuff before saving online. Just saying....

23.01.2022 The rose is Valencia, and yes we will have it later in the year as a cut flower, potted rose bush and bare rooted next Winter. But that isn't why I posted the photos. Both pictures are of the same rose variety. Why the colour difference you you ask? Two things in action here. Firstly the tight bud is always more yellow, if that is a term:) But secondly the bloom colours tend to change with the seasons. Blame it on the weather:) ... Either way it is one of my favourite roses, looks good in the garden, cuts well and lasts for at least a week in a vase. In fact, you all know the Australian thing, that if you buy rose flowers they must be in tight bud to last. That is a bit of a furphy. I suspect started by importers of flowers from overseas, because they ship better (and much cheaper) if in bud. Fun fact, in many European countries you will pay as much for a single fully open bloom as you would for a whole bunch of buds. Fully open is often required by top end florists. Not so fun fact. If you by imported tight budded roses, they may well never open fully or last as long as fully open local roses.

23.01.2022 Even after being battered by days of wind and dust, Kardinal 85 puts on an amazing display in any garden. A prolific flowering rose perfect for any garden and also a wonderful cut flower. Limited numbers are available for pre-order for delivery July 2020 as a bare-rooted plant. https://shop.excitations.com.au/product/kardinal/

21.01.2022 Message from another planet crossed my desk this morning. Basically how to grow stuff. Or, more precisely how to water stuff you are growing. The guy leading the lesson, suggests that during the heat of Summer you should water your veggie patch twice a week. Hand watering only takes few minutes. He then goes on to say that he lives in a dry climate where they ONLY GET 850mm of rain each year and he refers to extreme heat as being above 22C

19.01.2022 All the running around stocking up for the worlds end, a lot of people are forgetting that good health prior to coming into contact with COVID19 is essential in winning the war. Seems to me buying processed food is good for long term storage, but buying fresh fruit and veg and consuming now would also be another piece in your survival armour. Just remember to wash ALL fresh fruit and veg before consumption. But hey, that applies all the time anyway.

18.01.2022 If you are thinking of buying bare-rooted roses this coming Winter. Do yourself a favour and make certain you order them to arrive late June or early July. They need time to get themselves organised for the Summer If you leave it until August, you are only giving yourself more work trying to keep them alive during the intensely hot days we have here in north-western Victoria.

17.01.2022 This has to be my favourite snippet from the news today. An English florist is asked how he prepares for a wedding. "Typically I will buy around 20,000 roses on Tuesday, to begin prepartations for Saturday".

17.01.2022 A quick heads up this morning. On Monday we will be announcing a special deal on bare rooted roses, ready to plant this Winter. If you are into roses or have friends wanting to start a rose garden, please let them know. We have very limited stocks available and this is by far the best deal I know of anywhere on the internet.

17.01.2022 As someone who is always chasing plants that are different. I just wonder how safe and viable some of the seed companies online are. I've certainly had more than one batch of seed that was totally useless. I'm also very concerned that different seed "companies" seem to offer the same seeds, packaged in the same manner for widely varying prices. And while I ponder the source of some of this seed. I also wonder if we are not in some way endangering Australia's bio-security. Has this stuff been imported legally? Has it been tested or past any quarantine checks or is it just plain dodgy? So for the time being, I have decided to scrub buying any seed online unless I know it is from a trusted source.

15.01.2022 Fresh really is best. So maybe we should be looking at supporting our local producers of fresh produce when we go shopping. The best form of drought aid for farmers and producers is our shopping dollars through good times and bad.

15.01.2022 Uglies have added 10kg cartons of Zucchini to our inventory. Fresh picked daily and locally. We are selling these at actual wholesale prices, not the pretend wholesale prices of many online stores. The variety is Cocozelle so they are a pale green colour with a darker stripe. Perfectly suited to restaurants, country market and roadside stallholders or people who use large amounts of Zucs. https://shop.excitations.com.au//zucchini-cocozelle-10kg-/

09.01.2022 MIND BLOWN I'm sure we have all heard of talking to your plants. Well.... researchers are finding that plants have numerous talents that we didn't and still don't understand. Some of the stunning discoveries reported include being able to count, remembering events, recognising relatives and even communicating to other plants. Before you get to excited and try and teach your plants tricks. Not all plants share the same abilities (that we know of anyway). And, the research is in its infancy but it seems we are surrounded by a whole bunch of vegetation that is capable of adapting and surviving using senses and reactions to environmental stimuli in manners we thought was reserved for the realm of science-fiction:)

07.01.2022 JACK IS BACK We have 10kg boxes of BlackJack Zucchini available at $12.50 a carton, yes we only sell by the carton. Pickup anytime buy appointment https://shop.excitations.com.au//zucchini-mildura-10kg-box/

06.01.2022 Code red seems an appropriate name today. #weather #dust #drought #australia #nofilter

06.01.2022 Growing roses in a hot climate. The good news there isn't much different than growing roses is cooler climates. Keep the soil moist especially the evening preceding a forecast scorcher. Have a good layer of mulch around the root zone, 75 to 100mm will help keep the roots cooler and reduces weed competition as well as help retain moisture. If you are growing darker colours, such as the popular deep reds and burgundies, you will need to provide shade for the buds just before the start to show colour. Otherwise they will burn to a crisp.

03.01.2022 We are running a special on Bare Rooted Roses A five pack of proven varieties, randomly selected by ourselves from our nursery. The great news is $45 including gst gets you the special plus free deliverybut only in Victoria and NSW.... The bad news, we can't select the colours you want, because, unfortunately the name tags were removed But more good news, when you follow the link to our store all the roses in the mixed collection are pictured in the product gallery If you know anyone who is interested in starting their rose garden. Please share this with them. I'm really confident you will not find a deal like this anywhere else. Thanks in advance for that. https://shop.excitations.com.au//bare-rooted-roses-bulk-p/

01.01.2022 Funny things spotted on the world wide web this morning. Lots of website owners regularly cut and paste large sections of their content. Most get away with it. However, an online seed shop claiming to be an Ozzie venture might not have bothered to read before pasting the planting instructions for their seeds. The instructions were for the northern hemisphere. Or put anotherway, they suggest planting six months out of season.

01.01.2022 Not much happening around the farm this morning, things are growing, pruning mostly done, cuttings all planted, Spring seedlings planted. A couple of weeks before the next lot of seeding. Biggest job this morning, chase down a carton of roses sent 2 weeks ago and not delivered. A little annoyed with Mr Australia Post as this is the replacement parcel for a client who didn't receive their first delivery because it also went missing. You have to smile at their lost parcel syste...m. Requires you to supply names and addresses of sender and receiver, along with details of package and contents. Then in their follow up they ask for more details including names and addresses, packaging details and information about the contents of the packet. apparently they are too stupid to read that information from the first form.. The one they are following up. See more
