20.01.2022 Sunset Gorge - Waterholes providing crucial drought refuges!

20.01.2022 Sunset Gorge 275ha of rugged wildlife habitat. This video shows an amazing contrast. It shows a small portion of Sunset Gorge.... Three years of record drought - the past 12 months 20% lower than the lowest recorded (in 130 years of records). Less than a kilometre behind the camera are horses of just ribs and skin, the carcasses of at least 40 sheep in one paddock. Despite this Sunset Gorge has held permanent water in her deep pools, partly fed by seepage from deep in her rock strata. Water crucial to the wildlife not just on the property, but from the bushfire ravaged area to the south. Some 75,000 ha all burnt in the past two weeks in a ferocious firestorm reached to within 300m of her southern boundary. If the brush tailed rock wallaby population has survived the drought and the fires, they will be hiding here in the protection of the main gorge or the many side gorges. Brolgas from the parched plains out west have been seen using these deep pools in drought on a number of occasions - they have to take big, swooping beats to rise up out of the gorge when disturbed. In contrast to the severity of the drought, it rained the night before this video. There is a high water level that shows the water was rushing far more intensively some 12 hours earlier. Neighbours recorded anywhere between 14 mm and 125mm. So the gorge and her deep pools are crucial to the survival of many species, in a area that is not well protected. Enjoy seeing the transformation of a parched landscape.

16.01.2022 Brolgas use the permanent waterholes in Sunset Gorge when out west gets dry. Hence the name Brolga Hole for the largest pool in the upper gorge.

14.01.2022 Hi all I thought you may be interested in camping at and exploring Sunset Gorge. We may start taking bookings later in 2016 subject to getting a few things in order. And we will add more images of the stunning country so you get a sense of the rugged, remote beauty. Located around an hour west of Tenterfield.

06.01.2022 See also Gulf Creek Falls Bush Retreat! It includes around 15km of rugged 4WD tracks to access some of its wild country!

03.01.2022 You are witnessing the beginning of an amazing transformation. Sunset Gorge has been in record drought. You can see by the bare ground which usually carries good grass and quite thick understorey plants. They are hanging on, especially in the gorge, where figs still hold onto boulders and run their roots into the cracks where water continued to seep even when it had not rained for months....Continue reading

03.01.2022 The rugged walk along the main gorge - for experienced bushwalkers only.

02.01.2022 People have been asking how has Sunset Gorge fared during the current drought. The creek and indeed the rivers in the region have stopped flowing, however the gorge is still full of quite deep rock pools and a very slow trickle fed by springs within the rocks. I disturbed a brolga at the very top of the gorge (the third time I have done so), so it is clearly an important refuge in drought.... And the forests and woodlands were still alive with a wide array of birdlife, forest bats and macropods (euros and rock wallabies were seen drinking from the gorge lower down). This footage was taken on 10th August 2018. I have some other drone footage further down the gorge, however it crashed and I am yet to recover the footage. I also will upload some videos and photos taken from my phone as time permits. Enjoy, and know if you support Sunset Gorge and the work done by Remnant Forest more broadly you are helping to protect this crucial wildlife refuge in an area that has largely been cleared. Thank You.
