We are releasing our letter to the National Cabinet, with the ten vital points for action. 18.01.2022 - - ? There are known links between physical activity, mental health and well-being. These unprecedented times have led to many disruptions to daily life following restrictions imposed to combat the spread of COVID-19, which may have impacted physical activity patterns and resulting mental health and well-being.... USC Researchers (Dr Dan Wadsworth, Dr Mia Schaumberg and Assoc. Prof. Chris Askew) have teamed up with colleagues in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand to investigate the effects of restrictions imposed by different Governments in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic on these factors. USC is leading the Australian arm of this survey to understand the effect of our Government’s restrictions on individual’s physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, and compare our findings to other regions throughout the world. You can access the survey here: https://bit.ly/35mhmOQ The Australian survey is being released with the endorsement of Exercise and Sports Science Australia. The survey takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, and your responses will help us to understand how physical activity, health and well-being have been impacted during different stages of COVID-19 Government restrictions. We also hope that it will better prepare us to support people in achieving and maintaining optimal health and well-being should be encounter such events in the future.

17.01.2022 We know many of you will be organised already, but here’s some things to consider in case the Corona Virus causes further changes to people's support plans. 1.... Ensure you have sufficient back up attendants/support workers. 2. Ensure that you have the ability to get assistance if an attendant does not show up for work. Who else could help or could you call on? 3. Have at least a week of non-perishable food in your home at any given time. 4. Stock up on other important supplies, cleaning products, gloves etc. 5. Identify a way to make sure you can get your medications in a timely manner. 6. Plan for your pets. 7. Have your attendants wash their hands and use hand sanitizer when they arrive at your home and each time prior to touching or feeding you. 8. Regularly clean, sanitize and disinfect the surfaces that are touched in your home to prevent the spread of infection. 9. Use disinfecting wipes on items that are frequently touched. 10. Have your attendant take extra steps to avoid possibly infecting you. 11. If your attendant becomes sick, urge them to seek medical care and utilize your backup attendants. 12. Take immediate steps to avoid infecting your attendants if you, one of your attendants, or a member of your household begins to feel sick. 13. If someone in your household becomes sick, take steps to avoid infecting other people. 14. If you become sick, seek medical care immediately. Call 1800 020 080 if you suspect you may have contracted COVID-19. Call 1800 022 222 for more general advice relating to your symptoms. The tips from this post are via Centre for Disability Rights who put together this super helpful post. Thank you. http://cdrnys.org//action-steps-for-attendant-service-use/ It is a responsibility of disability service providers that they are - Ensuring continuity of support so that participants access timely and appropriate support without interruption, including that disaster preparedness and planning measures are in place to enable continuation of critical supports before, during or after a disaster. 12.01.2022 Honouring a dedicated community advocate and leader, Alan O'Callaghan WHEN approached to share his experiences as a volunteer in acknowledgment of National Volunteer Week (May 18-24), Alan O’Callaghan was hesitant. I’ve always had a dilemma about promoting the link between people with disabilities and volunteering as if it’s their only work option, Alan said matter-of-factly.... Alan serves as the committee secretary for 121 Care and president for the Mooloolah Valley Community Association to which he volunteers not only his time, but also his skills, knowledge and experience as a community worker. 08.01.2022 Changes to disability parking laws were passed in Queensland Parliament overnight, allowing carers of people who are legally blind or visually impaired to quali...fy for a permit for their vehicle. Bundaberg's David Batt MP has been fighting for the changes for two years which included launching a petition to push for the law. "In my opinion, legally blind Queenslanders should have always been able to access disability parking spaces and now they finally can... this is another example that people power, persistence and perseverance does pay off" - David Batt MP. www.7NEWS.com.au #qldpol #7NEWS

06.01.2022 Health and disability experts are calling on State and Federal governments to urgently develop a targeted plan for people with disability and their families to ...deal with the threat of Coronavirus. While a targeted plan has been put in place for the aged care sector, there is no such plan for the disability sector. There are important questions like: What's the plan to make sure people can still get support workers if their current worker or workers get sick? What's the plan if people's families get sick and cannot provide the care they usually do? What's the plan if services shut down? What's the plan to make sure disability services have an adequate supply of important things such as personal protective gear, hand sanitiser, cleaning equipment? What's the plan for families who may have to take time off work to care for someone if workers are sick or services shut down? What's the plan for people who have the most complex needs? And we would add - what's the plan to make sure all information about this important issue is available and accessible? The coverage we saw of the Prime Minister's press conference this afternoon did not have captions or an Auslan interpreter. The Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health have made a number of recommendations about what they think should be done straight away. You can read more here - https://credh.org.au//covid-19-and-people-with-disabiliti/ (Image description: A picture of a tweet from the Centre of Research Excellence in Disability and Health. 05.01.2022 Advocate for People with Disabilities Shares his Wisdom 'John often writes from the perspective of people with disabilities who are already facing an epidemic of loneliness, and now as people are physically isolating, the need to reach out and stay socially connected is more important than ever. John shares four ideas for these times.... First, rather than drowning in a mindset of loneliness he encourages us to embrace solitude. Secondly, he inspires us to strengthen ties with others even when we are isolated. Third, he believes we can learn together during these times to simplify our lives to embrace a simpler life. Fourth, he reminds us to reach out to our neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable. We may be apart, but we are in this together.' Tamarack Institute
