23.01.2022 The latest State of the Climate Report has been released by the Bureau of Meteorology and the findings are clear, we are experiencing climate change right now. Australia’s climate has warmed on average by 1.44 0.24 C since national records began in 1910, leading to an increase in the frequency of extreme heat events. There has been an increase in extreme fire weather, and in the length of the fire season, across large parts of the country since the 1950s, especially in so...uthern Australia. Sea levels are rising around Australia, including more frequent extremes, that are increasing the risk of inundation and damage to coastal infrastructure and communities.

20.01.2022 Sunshine Coast Council has just released the draft Coastal Hazard Adaptation strategy (CHAS) for our Coastline titled our resilient coast our future. It is a long-term strategy to help manage the impacts of coastal hazards due to climate change. The hazards include erosion of our beaches and estuarine foreshores as well as short (tides and storm surge) and long term (sea level rise) sea water inundation along our coastline and estuaries. The Council wants to release the fin...al strategy early next year and has only allowed I month for the public to have a say on the draft. Public consultation closes at 5.00pm, 7th December 2020 It should be pointed out it is only a policy document. However, it is vital that as many people and groups as possible have informed input into the strategy as it could and should have a major influence on the decision making of the Council. You can have input into the draft strategy by: Reviewing the draft strategy online Attend one of the webinars (online discussions) Attend one of the open house sessions

09.01.2022 URGENT: A Senate inquiry has been launched into the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Streamlining Environmental Approvals) Bill 2020. If passed, the Bill allows the Federal Government to devolve its responsibilities to manage Matters of National Environmental Significance to states and territories, resulting in fractured and inconsistent environmental protection across the country. Legislative reform should not be rushed through prior to the re...lease and consideration of the final report of the Samuel Review of the EPBC Act. This is our opportunity to stop this Bill from passing in its current form, which would significantly weaken national environmental protections. Please take action to keep the pressure on the government to implement strong environment laws by signing the letter below from Humane Society International Australia

08.01.2022 The Queensland Conservation Council is campaigning to ensure that all Queenslanders can look forward to a safe and prosperous future, where coal power stations are replaced by clean renewable energy. Queensland is the Sunshine State and yet we are currently more reliant on coal than any other state or territory in Australia. We are also the country’s biggest carbon polluter.... In 2007-2008, coal accounted for approximately 88% of the state’s electricity generation and renewables only 2%, with gas making up the remaining 10% of supply. Since then, the government has begun working towards a target of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and we’re now on-track for 20% of the state’s electricity consumption to come from renewable energy sources by the end of 2020. According to The Australia Institute, renewables are cheaper to build, even with six hours of backup storage tacked on to it it's cheaper to build than coal by about 30 per cent. Support the campaign by signing the petition in the comments below.
