09.01.2022 Well said about our profession! Communication and Superdiversity Translators and interpreters are unique conduits facilitating the free flow of communications between peoples and nations in todays challenging and most exciting superdiverse environment. The contexts and conditions in which peoples and individuals interact and communicate now are very different from those of the past. Through translation and interpreting we engage with the contemporary social changes associate...d with superdiversity. This presents us with both new opportunities and new challenges. Translators and interpreters can be most important contributors to a healthier and happier superdiverse human eco-system. Source: NZSTI ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2018 WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND, 26-27 MAY 2018

08.01.2022 A warning message from a QLD colleague: Dear colleague and stakeholder of the interpreting industry/profession, The article below (UK) could serve as a warning ...for unethical operators contracting unqualified, untrained interpreters to provide services to Police and other government and non-government agencies. The fact that Ms Bon Bon (yes, thats her name), manager of ITL, the Language Service Provider, LSP, in question, was allegedly more than happy to recruit foreign students to provide interpreting services seems somewhat familiar with whats allegedly happening in Queensland. Another statement in the article that rings a familiar bell is the fact that LSPs sometimes recruit people on the strength of their English, not having their Language Other than English (LOTE) adequately assessed before contracting them; some of these interpreters arrived in Australia as children and never studied their LOTE formally or never travelled to the country of origin to pursue language studies. Their language is as good as that of an 11-year olds, sometimes lacking any medical or legal vocabulary, even at the lowest level. As a NAATI qualified interpreter myself, I can vouch that only a handful of end-users of my services ask me about my qualification, clients seem to trust the Organisation and the Language Service Provider to only engage qualified interpreters when delivering interpreting services, which is not the case. The fact that many NAATI Certified Interpreters (former Level 3) in QLD are rejecting interpreting jobs for courts, police interviews, Administrative Appeals (including Migration Review) Tribunals, AFP, and other such situations where the competence level needed is high and the environment is highly stressful and demanding, is another story... NAATI Certified interpreters are choosing not to work for substandard rates and conditions. Buyer beware... https://tinyurl.com/y88houqg

05.01.2022 A little over a week ago, we rallied outside the VITS/Language Loop Offices. VITS have offered to meet with us. But until this translates into fruitful dialogue, we have to keep the pressure on. This Friday 23 August, same time, same place, but bigger and better. Will you join us?
