24.01.2022 At our AGM on Wednesday night, there was a changing of the guard with 3 members of the Executive Committee retiring as well as one Committee Member. I was elected as President, Sarah Capes as Vice President, Toni Hawkes as Secretary and Glenn Hoppitt as Treasurer. Lenice Beard and Raelene Sproule were re-elected to the Committee, and we welcome new recruits Todd Marsden and Kyran Stanton. It's great to have a couple of younger Members volunteer to help run the Club. We all lo...ok forward to serving our Members for the next 12 months. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the retiring members for their outstanding contributions to our Club. Sean Kelly has done a sterling job as President for the past 2 years. David Evans is retiring from the thankless task of Secretary. Michael Geard has stepped down from his role as Vice President for the past 2 years, having served as President for 3 years prior to that. We also farewell from the Committee John Gericke, who has been a very loyal servant, particularly in his role as maintenance officer. A couple of years ago, John was awarded Life Membership for outstanding contributions to the Club. Thanks to the outgoing Committee, and to previous Committees, our Club is in a healthy financial situation with superb assets. There are still plenty of improvements which require attention. These include replacing the surface on Court 2, replacing the fencing at the rear of Courts 2-6 and upgrading the lighting. The incoming Committee will have the onerous task of guiding our Club through the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncharted waters that this has created. It would appear that we may have lost a small number of Members as a result of the pandemic. However, if you have merely overlooked renewing your membership, we'll be very happy to hear from you. Stay positive and savour every moment on the court! Our Treasurer, Glenn Hoppitt, has advised that he will be retiring from the Committee next year. If there are any "bean counting" Members out there who would be interested in taking on that position, we would love to hear from you. Glenn will be only too happy to work with you to ensure a seamless transition. Stay safe Members and please continue to observe the Government's regulations for COVID-19. We must continue keeping a list of all visitors to the Club, in the event that contact-tracing is required, so please continue to book your court by texting Sarah Capes on 0417 308 317. Players joining one of our organised social groups don't need to book because their games are recorded by the group organisers. Remember that the courts are yours and we strongly encourage you to use them as much as you can. Happy Tennis! John Foale President

16.01.2022 Many of you will be aware that effective immediately we are postponing all Tennis Australia and Tennis Tasmania operated events, competitions and tournaments un...til further notice. Local competitions, leagues or pennant not operated by Tennis Tasmania are at the discretion of the Club or Association that runs the competition. We all know tennis is a unique sport with many benefits the main one being health and wellbeing. The very nature of our game ensures there is a vital role our sport can continue to play for the benefit of the community as we endure the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 Community Tennis Guidelines for Continued Play (below) is an attempt to provide advice for all involved at the community level on the safest way to continue playing. As long as we all abide by strict health and hygiene guidelines coaches, volunteers, administrators, associations and tennis centres can continue to provide an outlet for physical and mental health through the sport of tennis. Additional measures will be required but there is still plenty of opportunity for tennis to be played as long as hygiene guidelines are followed to help support the community’s ability to stem the spread of COVID-19, whilst helping the health and wellbeing of many of us. Due to the fast evolving nature of this pandemic, conditions beyond our sport and in this environment can change and we will continue to keep everyone updated. These guidelines provide support for everyone involved at the grassroots level on the safest way to continue playing.

14.01.2022 Players from our Thursday morning social tennis group gathered at the Clubhouse last week to thank Michael and Jenny Palmer for co-ordinating the group for almost 20 years. Each player contributes $1 per week to buying tennis balls (and biscuits!) with excess funds being donated to The Fred Hollows Foundation and other worthy causes. Cancer Council Tasmania sent Michael and Jenny a certificate to thank them for raising over $10,000 at annual Biggest Morning Tea events. Delicious food and a great catch up with friends.
14.01.2022 Time for a vote of thanks to Club volunteers who turned their hands to some ‘socially distanced’ maintenance, during lockdown. The Clubhouse floor was stripped back and the new paint looks fantastic. We did a big tidy up and the kitchen is sparkling clean, with every glass, mug, plate and piece of cutlery washed. The weeds around the Club flourished during lockdown and needed a good spray. On Saturday 20th May, a bandicoot was spotted next to the Clubhouse deck we think it moved in whilst everything was so quiet!
13.01.2022 Tennis leadership in action.
13.01.2022 This rainy afternoon seems like a good time to post a video of Howrah on a sunny day. Our Club greatly benefited from the showing of this fabulous video about Sunshine at the Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards Night in Melbourne. Featured children and their coaches Dickson Tennis should be very proud. https://www.youtube.com/watch

11.01.2022 After a week of having the courts open, we’d like to say THANK YOU to our Members for following the Covid-19 operating ‘rules’ that we implemented with the help of Tennis Tasmania. We have all dutifully completed the Attendance Book and everyone seems more than happy to be getting out there and hitting that yellow ball again! We know having to book a court is boring but have found agreed times for everyone who has wanted to play. Let’s hope Social Distancing will soon be relaxed and we can open Courts 3 and 5 again. This pix is of Saturday's social tennis group with 8 players.

10.01.2022 Two Options for Competition Tennis.... 1) Have you thought about playing social competition tennis on Wednesday nights at Sunshine? This is a great way to see if you enjoy competitive play and of course to meet other Club Members. The coming round starts 14th October and ends 2nd December. Call John Beard on 0417 305 511. 2) The first series of the Southern Tennis League, organised by Matt at Tennis Tasmania, was a great success and a second series is planned. It will run for 6 weeks from Saturday 24th October to Saturday 29th November, starting 2pm each week. Finals will be on Saturday 5th December. The Sunshine Sizzlers were runners up in the first series, with 7 clubs participating, so let’s see if we can beat that this time round! Call Michael Geard on 0400 974 056.
10.01.2022 Congratulations to Sunshine Myrtle who won Division 2 of the Midweek Ladies' Competition. Pictured are team members Loren Johnston, Tash Erends and Rosie Stuart. Along with Lyn Muir (from Geilston Bay) who filled in for Sarah Stoneman.
10.01.2022 Tennis Tasmania is running the Southern Tennis League at 1pm on Saturdays, from 1st August to 19th September. 09.01.2022 Congratulations to Team De Minaur in the Tennis Tasmania Super10s last weekend. Sunshine Tennis Club Members and Dickson Tennis players Charlie M, Oscar P and Jack M (along with Darcy from Geilston Bay) won all of their matches and the tie.
08.01.2022 Fantastic that we have now been able to open all 6 courts, although it remains preferable to use alternate courts where possible. Let’s get out there and enjoy these sunny autumn days! Organized social tennis groups can have up to 20 players, and group coordinators will continue to keep a record of players on each date. The Club still has to keep an attendance book so booking outside an organized group remains compulsory, by texting 0417 308 317. Tennis Tasmania continues to recommend Play Tennis and Leave - so please avoid standing around and chatting after the finish of play. We have opened the Clubhouse toilets and changing rooms for emergency use only. The kitchen and other facilities remain closed. If we all continue to respect the rules, the Club should be permitted to relax playing conditions again on or before 13th July.

08.01.2022 It's rare for Sunshine's Life Members to be at the Club at the same time but our recent gathering to thank Carol Drew proved to be such an occasion.
