30.04.2022 It’s raining colour: Rainbrella Project brings joy to Ginger Factory A huge splash of colour has arrived in Yandina with close to a thousand brightly coloured umbrellas suspended over the rainforest gardens at the The Ginger Factory. The team, inspired by Tourism Manager Brenda Bailey, collaborated with local artist Sophy Blake to create a joyous explosion of colour, aptly named the Rainbrella Project. ... The Ginger Factory is a place where people can come and enjoy art for art’s sake, said Ginger Factory Tourism Manager Brenda Bailey. We are a free entry park and this is a public art installation that anybody can come and enjoy. And that, I love. It is our hope that being the first artwork of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, the installation brings joy, happiness and peace to all who journey through its colourful paths. The artwork explores the theme of hope and new beginnings, said artist Sophy Blake referring to the Covid pandemic. Historically rainbows are known as a symbol of hope; a symbol that despite the darkness, storms or tribulations of life, can appear, evoking a feeling of peace. With each colour signifying an expression of hope, rainbows bring the promise that the troubles of today will come to pass, she said. The free installation is made up of nearly 1000 rainbow-coloured umbrellas suspended above the rainforest via a network of interconnected steel structures designed to last. The stunning display has had guests craning their heads skywards over the past few weeks as it has been installed. It’s also proved a practical protection from the unusually wet weather experienced this autumn. Visitors can enjoy the Rainbrella Project 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm at The Ginger Factory, 50 Pioneer Road, Yandina. 23.01.2022 FORUM HELD IN MALENY TO DISCUSS PROTECTING ELDERS FROM ABUSE Speak Up Now - Help Save Lives - Maleny & Blackall Range, recently held an Elder Abuse forum to cover the legal aspects of protecting our elders. The audience viewed a video play developed by the Suncoast Community Legal Service Inc giving an easily accessible way of explaining the pitfalls in our relationships with the elders in our families. QCWA and Maleny Blackall Range Lions Clubprovided the morning tea that be...gan the program, followed by the showing of the video play and a Q&A session. A spokesperson for the Speak Up Now committee, Val France, said the questions raised in the Q&A session were very relevant. The questions proved the value of this forum and brought up issues that were obviously of concern to members of the audience. We were pleased that the panel of experts we assembled were able to answer them or offered private counselling and advice later, she said. The panel included Julian Porter, Managing Solicitor Suncoast Community, Tove Easton, Easton Lawyers Ben O’Rourke and Lola Mashado Relationships Australia Qld, and Stacy Oehlman (Centacare Domestic and Family Violence Services, Sunshine Coast, formerly SCOPE). Attendance was open to all members of the community and included representatives sent by many community groups. Participants agreed the program was a thought provoking way to learn about individual rights and responsibilities and especially in terms of Powers of Attorney. A survey completed by most of the attendees indicated the value of the forum as ‘most useful’, ‘good to learn there are services available’, ‘great panel’. The Speak Up Now committee includes representatives of Rotary, Lions and Zonta clubs. It is committed to taking these concerns into future events. There are more ideas for forums in the new year. Hairdressers are seen as an important resource as they often hear about instances of abuse, so an information session will be held for them. In addition there is the possibility of a community fun event to let people know the group is working hard to eradicate domestic and family violence on the Blackall Range. Club Professional Wayne Perske said players would compete for great prizes in the monthly single-stroke event and anyone who beat their adjusted AGU handicap stood to win a dozen premium Srixon Z Star golf balls more than coverin...g the cost of their $45 entry fee. We’ve established this competition to appeal to mid-week golfers keen to test their skills and abilities against course architect Graham Papworth and the championship set-up by our award-winning Superintendent Mick McCombe, Wayne said. The course record of six-under 62 is currently held by Adam Scott, who played a few rounds here with us during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, so it will be interesting to see how that stands up. Inspired by Kooralbyn Valley’s famed Copperhead Challenge, the first Maleny Red Belly Challenge will be held on Wednesday 27 January 2021 and winners of the monthly events will be invited back to play in an annual final in September. The Par 68 course is comprised of two Par 5s, 10 Par 4s and 6 Par 3s featuring unique revetted greenside bunkering, Tiffdwarf Bermuda Grass greens and Kikuyu fairways within a peaceful, scenic hinterland setting. (Plans are afoot though to soon convert the 9th hole to a Par 5, taking the front 9 holes to Par 35). The new monthly competition was officially launched on Sunday December 6 2020 at the inaugural Maleny Invitational for Mid-Amateur and Senior players involving a strong field of 112 golfers. Monthly prizes being provided by sponsors Srixon and Spicers Tamarind Retreat, will include a Maleny Golf Club shirt with a Red Belly Challenge logo and a dinner for two for winners, as well as a traditional ball rundown. 19.01.2022 NO EVIDENCE TO INDICATE THAT A MODIFIED POLICING PRESENCE OR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED: POLICE Sunshine Coast District Superintendent Craig Hawkins seemed to pour water on the prospect of a Nambour Police Beat. In response to a request for a statement on the matter of Nambour CBD safety the District Superintendent said: Nambour policing division is policed by 30 sworn uniformed officers and further supplemented by Nambour based plain clothes investigators.... In addition, support units that have a district wide responsibility including the Tactical Crime Squad, Road Policing, Dog Squad and Vulnerable Persons Unit also supplement the Nambour division as required. The death of Aysha Baty was very distressing for the Nambour community, and although events of this nature do occur on occasion in Queensland, it is a rarity for Nambour. A preliminary review of the crime classes occurring in the Nambour township reveal strong similarities over the last three years and are comparative to other Queensland communities to the size of Nambour. Whilst police work tirelessly to influence the occurrence of crime and additional policing resources are always desirable, there is no evidence to indicate that a modified policing presence or response is required. The Gazette also contacted the Police Minister's office but the Minister declined to comment. "decisions about resources/police beats etcetera are a matter for the police," a spokesperson said.

17.01.2022 DEVELOPERS SEEK PERMISSION TO DELAY SHOPPING CENTRE APPLICATION Developers of a proposed Palmwoods shopping centre want to delay the project for up to four years. A previous extension request in 2018 was due to expire last week. The developer, Burnett Street Nominees Pty Ltd, blames economic conditions from COVID-19 for causing the delay.... The 3610sqm shopping centre and 20-unit residential complex is proposed on the block opposite the Palmwoods Hotel and Spar supermarket. The development was approved in 2014 after being downgraded from 30 units. A request letter to council said lapsing of the application would contribute to site disrepair. The delivery of an integrated shopping complex would provide services and conveniences to residents that would otherwise not be readily available to them. The application argues that the site currently hosts dilapidated buildings which may not be fixed or removed if the proposal lapsed. #palmwoods #development

16.01.2022 INTRODUCING LABOR'S CANDIDATE FOR NICKLIN - Rob Skelton As the prospective Member for Nicklin my commitment is to see the region safe and secure in this time of pandemic. ... A healthy population can rebuild anything. The road to recovery will involve sustainable industries and stability for working families. I want our children to be able to study, work and raise families here. Railways and transport, law and order, safety, security and community well-being are keys to the life we all want here in Nicklin. I aim to protect, serve and give Nicklin a loud focused voice at the table of Government. Whether as a firefighter or member of Anastacia’s team managing the economic recovery from Covid-19, I will always put Nicklin and Queensland first. I was born in Sydney into a defence-force family and finished school in Queensland in 1992 and then completed a sheet-metal trade before joining the Royal Australian Navy in 1995 as a Boatswain’s Mate. I served on HMAS Swan, Canberra, and Ipswich (a patrol boat policing border and fisheries incursions). I spent 7.5 years in the Navy with my last posting at the Gunnery Range in Flinders, Victoria where I also volunteered with the Country Fire Authority. I transferred to the R.A.A.F in March 2002 and became a professional firefighter. I served in Tindal, N.T. for two years before discharging to join the Aviation Rescue and Firefighting Service. I have seen active service for over 15 years, in Townsville and now serving as Leading Aviation Firefighter in Brisbane. In 2017, I was elected President of the UFUA (United Firefighters Union of Australia) Aviation Branch by the 900 national members and served till 2019. In that role I appeared before Senate committees and inquiries, and consequently am no stranger to the workings of government. I have been honoured with an Operational Service Medal (border operations), National Medal and Defence Medal. I have three beautiful grown children who are my pride and joy. 16.01.2022 GREENS HOPE TO REPLICATE COUNCIL POLL SUCCESSThe Greens are aiming for success at the coming state election, hoping to replicate their results at the council elections where they polled over 22 percent and ran a close second in Division 5 as well as Division 10. Senator Larissa Waters said the Sunshine Coast deserved representatives who would serve the community, not corporate interests. For too long, the major parties have taken the Sunshine Coast for granted because they a...re beholden to their corporate donors, Senator Waters said. Our party does not take corporate donations, so we will always put people first. Greens candidate for Nicklin, Sue Etheridge is a small business owner with extensive experience in banking, finance and business management. She is part owner and operator of a building company and aviation theory school, and has lived on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland for 38 years. I’m tired of the stale old parties who place the interests of big business ahead of our community, Ms Etheridge said. The Sunshine Coast needs a major investment to deal with the region’s growing unemployment rate. The Greens will create more than two thousand jobs for the Coast by investing in public housing, infrastructure, publicly-owned renewable energy, and revitalising local manufacturing. Greens candidate for Glass House Andrew McLean is a former youth pastor and small business owner who lives in Maleny. The major parties have left our rural communities floundering with a lack of job opportunities and inadequate services, Mr McLean said. We will invest in health care and create 200 more jobs for doctors and nurses as well as 16 more community health centres. We will invest in genuinely free education with more teachers, smaller class sizes, and no more fees. 14.01.2022 PIANIST RETURNS TO MUSIC AND WINS PRESTIGIOUS COMPETITION A return to a deep musical passion after more than three decades working as an airline pilot has resulted in a national award win for Montville pianist Ian Lucas. Ian competed against about 40 others Australian’s to be recently named the joint winner of the inaugural Sydney Piano Lovers Competition an event open only to amateur pianists over 30.... I’m very pleased. I worked hard and I felt I’d do okay because I’ve been playing well, but you never know who else has entered because it’s adjudicated by private video, Ian said. Ian was first taught classical piano by his mother as a child, but in his late teens his life took a different path and he embarked on a career as an airline pilot. It was some 32 years later, having retired from flying and with encouragement from his wife Lee, he once again sat at the piano. It wasn’t until I turned 50 and my wife said ‘You should go back to music’, and I said ‘okay’. I slowly regained my technique and artistry. I found the return to music and continuous practicing more fatiguing than I remembered and progress was slower than I thought and hoped. Music didn’t return to me overnight, it took quite a few years to get everything back. He admits he feels some responsibility for keeping alive a family history of classical music. It’s a lineage my grandmother taught my mother, who taught me, and I guess my grandmother’s mother probably taught her as well. Ian also took the time to teach the couple’s twin children, Sam and Meg, who have also followed musical paths. Sam is now a professional Cellist studying and living in Germany under management and with a record label contract. Ian and Lee are known for establishing Lucas Parklands Montville, home to a 150-seat classical music auditorium described as one of the top performance venues of its size in the world. #pianist #music #arts #worldclass #awardwinning #montville

We are planning to start photography as one of our main projects and need digital cameras and a quality printer for members to use for this program, said Studio23 Program Director Kris Fitzgerald. We also need a good scanner for art and music programs. Studio23 is a not-for-profit centre in Maleny; it is a place where members with diverse abilities can socialise, connect and create. Opening in November 2018, Studio23 was established to address the need for local, accessible and flexible programs for people living with disability and disadvantaged people living in Maleny. Regular customers of Maleny Supa IGA will know many of the delightful members from Studio23 through the work experience they do in-store to build skills, confidence and relationships. We have around 20 members who are thriving at the studio, said Kris. We keep our groups small so there is always a ratio of 1 to 2 which means one facilitator to 2 members. 13.01.2022 ADMIRED COUPLE PROVES TO BE A FAVOURITE ON FACEBOOK A humble couple and their thriving orchid broke the Sunshine Valley Gazette’s Facebook reach record last week. We carried a story about Gerry and Valerie Zwart’s amazing orchid that appears to thrive on regular cups of tea.... The story reached 29,727 people on Facebook. The Zwarts had no idea of the online activity and were thrilled when told last week. It’s no wonder the couple, now in their 90s, attracted such interest. Many people remember them from their volunteer work for the Mapleton community after moving from South Australia in 1989. In fact both were awarded Orders of Australia for Services to Mapleton and Surrounding Community, Valerie in 2010 and Gerry in 2015. Soon after arriving, the couple joined the Friends of the Library and were devastated when the community facility was destroyed by fire. But they leapt into action and raised $15,000 to replace the facility in only 10 months. We raised a record amount of money in record time and by the time we moved in it was freehold, Valerie said. Meanwhile, in a quite remarkable story, it was this time last year Gerry accepted Israel’s highest honour on behalf of his parents Marinus and Marie. They were posthumously honoured as Righteous Among the Nations for their bravery in hiding Jews in their house during the German occupation in World War Two. Gerry, who was in his early teens at the time, was heavily involved in the dangerous work while he grew up in the Dutch village of Blaricum. If they had caught a few Jews in our house, we would get the same treatment as the Jews, which was [to be] sent off to the concentration camps, Gerry said. Israeli man Lex Menco travelled to Australia to be at the ceremony. Mr Menco and his four sons would never have been born if not for the bravery of Gerry’s family, who hid his mother Bela during the Holocaust. Mr Zwart also recalled him and a mate fleeing from German soldiers who had captured them to work in the factories. The Germans were yelling for us to come back and then they started shooting. You could hear the bullets hitting the trees around you, he said. The Zwarts moved to Sanctuary Park Retirement Community in Nambour nine years ago. Now in their 90s Gerry and Valerie say they are looking forward to their 70th anniversary in three years. #courage From left, Renee Menco, Gerry Zwart, Lex Menco, Valerie Zwart, and Israel ambassador Mark Sofer at the ceremony.

12.01.2022 WE'LL FIX THIS 'GOAT TRACK', SAYS POWELL An LNP Government would commit an additional $5 million in upgrades for Maleny-Kenilworth Road if elected, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has announced. Earlier this year, I announced that the ‘goat track’ between Lees Road and Booloumba Creek at Cambroon would be upgraded to two lanes of bitumen, Mr Powell said.... Now, I’m pleased to announce an LNP State Government will invest a further $5 million to widen and improve safety on Maleny-Kenilworth Road between Maleny and Witta. The LNP are dedicated to busting congestion and improving road safety across SEQ we will make this road safer for locals and tourists alike. Maleny-Kenilworth Road is a designated tourist route and a daily commute for locals. But it has never been up to scratch. The fact that several kilometres remain gravel and in other sections the road is narrow, with steep drop offs, is simply not acceptable. Getting that $5 million earlier this year was a great start but that’s all it was, a start. We recognise the importance of this road as a key arterial in the area. It’s just not safe enough as it is. Mr Powell was joined by Witta local, Dennis Hensby, who has been working to get improvements on the section from Maleny to Witta. This road has been falling to pieces for years now, especially on some of the sharp left-hand corners, said Mr Hensby. This is excellent news and the upgrade is well overdue. 12.01.2022 HISTORY SEALED AT YANDINA by Robyn Anns History was made on Tuesday 22 September 2020 when Yandina officially celebrated its 150th birthday and marked the occasion with the sealing of a time capsule in the centre of town. The Sunshine Coast Mayor joined community groups and local businesses at the Cenotaph Reserve to celebrate the official proclamation of Yandina on 23 September 1870; and unveil a commemorative plaque mounted on a boulder sourced from Mt Ninderry. Division... 10 Councillor David Law said he was pleased to see Yandina had retained its cultural heritage and character. Congratulations to all past and present residents of this great town that has a very bright future, Cr Law said. Yandina is a very popular part of the Sunshine Coast and has many wonderful attractions for visitors to enjoy. Yandina Chamber of Commerce President John O'Leary said people don’t often get the chance to celebrate a 150-year milestone. It’s really something special. Yandina was the first gazetted town for the Maroochy district, he said. We call it the original workers’ town because that’s where all the railway, cattle, dairy and sugar were, and all things that workers needed. Yandina has retained its character with the pub, historic buildings and quirky businesses. It really has a great village vibe to it. 11.01.2022 WHAT MAKES A STATE OF ORIGIN PLAYER? Hinterland heroes Mal Meninga, Billy Slater and Ben Ross all feature in an intriguing new book by Sunshine Coast author and life-long rugby league enthusiast Robert Burgin. In Maroon Mentality, Burgin sets out to explore the childhood factors which forged the resolve of all 203 Maroons players since 1980. The book is equal parts sports history, psychology and sociopolitical commentary, providing insight to the inspirations and tragedies be...hind each athlete. Maroon Mentality includes sections on record-setting Meninga’s upbringing at Palmwoods, on Slater’s childhood ties to Nambour, and of Ross’s ongoing links to Flaxton. Dulong-based coach of the Sunshine Coast Falcons, Sam Mawhinney, also lends his expertise within the pages, recounting memories of on-field battles featuring Ross and local rivals Chris Flannery and Casey McGuire in their youth. Roughly 130 original interviews and more than 5000 reference materials were used in constructing Maroon Mentality. A major reason for writing the book was to exhibit that no matter where people came from geographically, what their cultural background was, what their family’s social status was, these 203 players all overcame the challenges in front of them to reach a unified goal, Burgin said. Another reason for the book was the celebration of State of Origin’s 40th anniversary in 2020. Aware that many players from Origin’s formative years were either past or approaching their 70th birthdays, the author wanted to capture the living history before it was too late. Touch wood, only four Queensland players have passed away in the last 40 years, Burgin said. I want to preserve the mantras they fell back on when times got tough. What habits did they form in adolescence that put them ahead of the curve? What made them push that little bit harder? Burgin was previously an employee of the Queensland Rugby League and the Brisbane Broncos, and wrote for Rugby League Week magazine for 20 years. 10.01.2022 STUDENTS IMMERSE THEMSELVES IN UNITED NATIONS SIMULATION Nambour State College hosted its first Pinnacle Immersion Day on Friday with students testing their mettle in the intriguing world of international affairs. Pinnacle Immersion Days have been created to provide cross-curricular, leadership building and deep student-led learning opportunities for students in the Pinnacle Program (academic acceleration program), said Emma Wratten, Junior Secondary Head of Department. Ei...ghty students will take part in the activities. Model UN is an educational simulation of a real United Nations conference. Students represent a given country and must engage in diplomatic negotiations to reach a resolution to a global event. It is often the first time that students are exposed to international affairs, said Ms Wratten. For Nambour State College students, this will further affirm our students’ place as global citizens. The event choice was inspired by the College’s Junior Secondary Academic Leaders seeking to see more Human Rights awareness. It was facilitated by the Youth UN of Queensland. The Pinnacle Program is growing to not only include Pinnacle Immersion Days (where student knowledge and skills are put into practice beyond the classroom), but also Morning Masterclasses for high level study skills and wellbeing, and a Pinnacle Pathway for current students who aspire to join the full program. The 2021 Year 7 Pinnacle Program is now full, but applications are open for current year 4 and year 5 students to join our primary school pathway program ‘Young Pinnacle Scholars’. 10.01.2022 SCARECROWS HEAD FOR MARY VALLEY Scarecrow spotting could be the best remedy for people looking to escape the life-disrupting influence of COVID-19. The straw creatures are leaving the hills to take up residence in the Mary Valley and they want you to come and see them. Social distancing is easy because they are usually solitary additions in their yards and paddocks!... The annual Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival is a popular Sunshine Coast event that can easily go ahead next month. Locals are invited to a scarecrow workshop on Thursday September 24 at the Imbil Public Hall from 1pm where they can learn the simple steps to making a straw man and then apply their own creativity to dressing it. Making scarecrows doesn’t cost an arm and a leg! Most people have the bones of a scarecrow in the shed a broomstick, a bale of hay and some old clothes. They can then enter their ‘crows for judging - and viewing - from October 1-31. Entry forms are available from businesses in the valley or they can be downloaded from the website. Award presentations and cash prizes will be made at the harvest dinner at 4.30pm at the Imbil RSL Hall, on Saturday October 31. For day trippers, the festival is a great opportunity to discover the rolling hills behind the Sunshine Coast. Visitors can find the scarecrows during October. Visit www.maryvalleyartslink.com.au for more details or find the Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival on Facebook. The festival began in Maleny and has been held during spring almost every year since the late ‘90s. Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival #scarecrows #countrylife

07.01.2022 ARTISTS ADD COLOUR & VIBRANCY TO NAMBOUR A very creative group of people is working hard to colour Nambour, including this work at Backbeat Records in Howard Street, pictured. Street Art Nambour organiser Lorraine Taylor said she saw a need to update the mural because it was fading out and it was on the route of Nambour’s new tram track.... Backbeat Records requested we use the same Street artist, Jason Kasino from Brisbane, and we were in agreement, said Lorraine. We never compromise another artists work if we can avoid it. Despite some rain, Jason ploughed on and completed it to everyone’s satisfaction. JC Hire from Nambour supplied scaffold so it could be done with ease and safety and Nambour Central Motel put Jason up for the time he was working on the mural. Without local support like this we couldn’t do this, said Lorraine. Despite losing Hendrix from this site, we are in negotiations with a local hotel to have him moved there. We have completed four murals this week with more to come next week. And we still need donations to pay our incredible artists. Check out www.streetartnambour.org for details. 07.01.2022 MARTY HUNT IS PUSHING FOR INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE IN NAMBOUR CBD Member for Nicklin Marty Hunt said he was pressing on to regain the momentum of a six week trial of a Police Beat in Nambour earlier in the year that had to be cut short when COVID hit and police resources were redirected. No doubt safety is the issue that we have to address to make sure people feel safe in Nambour and the push for a Police Beat or at least a regular mobile beat unit continues, Mr Hunt said.... Mr Hunt said the business community was very supportive of a Police Beat and there was even free premises offered for it in C-square. The local police were supportive of it as long as they didn’t lose existing resources to the facility, because they are so under-resourced as it is. Even if we can’t get an actual shop front, I know that the Police District is currently having a mobile beat unit constructed and we hope to have it in Nambour regularly. Mr Hunt said the interrupted trial had been very much appreciated by the community. I spoke to all the businesses that I could visit, to see how the Police Beat trial was going for them and it was very positively received. It makes people feel safe. And it discourages the type of antisocial behaviour that makes people feel scared. It’s not necessarily high crime but it’s behaviour that can be intimidating. When your daughter, mum or grandmother is walking down the street you don’t want to see people hanging around, fighting, swearing, drinking, spitting on the ground. And that fear, whether it’s warranted or not, it exists. Perception is reality. This is not necessarily something people will call 000 for, but it’s happening and it’s intimidating. We want Nambour to be a vibrant, happening sort of place for families. You know, we’ve got a great cinema now. We’ve got Stalwart Alehouse and Brewery up there. We’ve got Downtown Burgers, we’ve got the pinball parlour. We’ve got a lot of good things happening. A lot of people are already coming to invest in Nambour because they can see a future here.

05.01.2022 THE GINGER FACTORY CALLS ON TIMELESS CLASSIC TO CELEBRATE THE CHANGING CULTURE OF FATHERHOOD The Ginger Factory is teaming up with Dads Group to host an exclusive Gruffalo Day, packed with free activities for Dads and their kids. The event will commence at 10am on Saturday, November 21 and includes a reading of the classic story, free activities, and a guest appearance from the Gruffalo. The collaboration is expected to be the first of many between the two organisations as Th...e Ginger Factory continues its support of the local community and raising awareness of the need for greater support for new fathers and their families. Providing fathers with a safe and fun place they can take their children while feeling supported within their local community is so important for new families and The Ginger Factory couldn’t be happier to be a part of this initiative, said Brenda Bailey Tourism Manager. (rep of GF) . Amongst the panel of fathers delivering the public reading will be Dads Group CEO Thomas Docking and community planning expert Dr Nicholas Stevens who will both be available for media enquiries. We are very happy to be working with a progressive organisation like the Ginger Factory who embraces and exhibits so much of what we stand for. Providing a safe and accessible space for families to connect is at the heart of what they offer, and we look forward to building on this relationship to establish regular events in the local community, said Tom. DGI is a not-for-profit community organisation committed to connecting new dads, thereby improving men’s health, preventing family violence and reducing isolation and suicide. It is believed the group is the only organisation of its kind in the world, dedicated to creating micro communities for new fathers. 04.01.2022 NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO? What started as a suicide prevention group has evolved in to a place in Nambour for people who just need someone to talk to. The deliberately informal group is called Chay’s Community MOB. Chay was a well-liked homeless man who used to join the group until he passed away.... It’s a group of lovely people who provide community support every Tuesday from 9.30am-11.30am, said Jackie Grassel who helps promote the meetings. They have been running this group for two and a half years. It started as a suicide prevention group but we found people just wanted someone to talk to ... so that’s what we do we are there to listen. Organisers Leigh Phelan and Sasha Fenger said the venue at C Square was ideal because it was central, well known and open air. The meetings are low key and low pressure with people coming and going as they please. It’s just somewhere to come and chat. It’s a safe environment and people appreciate being in the open air. The meetings are well served for refreshment with expert barristas from Eumundi Coffee providing tantalising brews. You can join the group every Tuesday morning for friendship, a cuppa & a snack at C Square, Nambour. Everyone is welcome. We’re here to listen. We would love to see you there. For information phone Leigh on 0407 344 550. Nambour Community Centre Chay’s MOB celebrated Corinne’s Birthday last week. Corinne is seated with case manager Bailey Lancaster and from left organisers Leigh Phelan and Sasha Fenger and Eumundi Coffee barrista Tom Rumble.

03.01.2022 "NAMBOUR DOES NOT EXPERIENCE CRIME AT A GREATER RATE THAN OTHER AREAS ACROSS THE SUNSHINE COAST" DIVISION 10 Cr David Law said increased policing was just one of a raft of measures required to reinvigorate Nambour. I would say safety is one small component of the overall whole picture, Cr Law said. I don’t believe it is the only issue. ... He said his and Council’s main area of responsibility concerned connecting the community to build strong communities. High perceptions of community safety are achieved through our collaborative partnerships and there is a lot of great work being done in that space. But in my view a stronger community has to be achieved through, not just policing on its own. Early intervention is powerful and we need to continue to support the initiatives of PCYC and of IFYS. We need to support the initiatives of Community Solutions and their youth program. And, above everything else, the number one crime problem and issue for the police and for communities is domestic violence. Cr Law said he wasn’t convinced there was any more antisocial behaviour in Nambour now than there may have been 20 years ago. He said he and his wife chose to raise their kids in Nambour and he had no problem at all with them being out and about in Nambour. We love the place, he said. Nambour does not experience crime at a greater rate than other areas across the Sunshine Coast and this includes violent crime and drug crime. Nambour also was going through a significant transition from a period where it was the administrative centre for the whole Sunshine Coast to one where that function had moved to the coast. I think retail everywhere is also going through a huge transition, he said. This phase required repurposing to new and different uses. People were now inclined to shop online or in large centres such as Sunshine Plaza or Kawana Shoppingworld and it wasn’t necessarily a good thing to attract big box retailers to the middle of Nambour and have them stifle smaller businesses in towns. International Broadband Cable connections to the Coast held huge potential benefits for the area. Nambour is extremely well placed to take advantage of improved connectivity through new technology, he said. Cameron Outridge
02.01.2022 WOODIES SKILLS HELP DEMENTIA PATIENTS The Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild have crafted several impressive engagement resources for patients being treated at the Acute Restorative Care (ARC) unit at Nambour Hospital. Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe said the items were being used by patients with complex cognitive issues, including those with dementia.... The workmanship was beyond our expectations and we are so grateful to the guild for turning this idea of donating wooden items to engage patients into a reality, Ms Rowe said. ARC Recreation Officer Ruth Morgan said members of the guild delivered Finska sets, a cornhole board for bean bag toss games and two platform steps for patients to practice using their wheeled-walkers to go up and down kerbs or steps at home. Finksa is a fun log-tossing game that helps with rehab. The platform steps were even weight-rated and the finish on the cornhole board was smooth to enable bean bags to slide on the surface, Ms Morgan said. We just want to publicly say a big thank you to the Blackall Range Woodcrafters for the fantastic, handcrafted donated items. They will be a legacy to their skills and reap long lasting benefits for patients for years to come. 02.01.2022 NEW WALKING TRAIL PAVES WAY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL DISCOVERY Picture: Cr Winston Johnston, former Cr Jenny McKay & retiring Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley launch the trail. Nature lovers can explore more of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, with new trails opening at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane.... With more than two kilometres of trails, the network offers an easy walk through the wetlands with the chance to spot dozens of native bird species, frogs and other water-loving wildlife. The Maleny Community Precinct is a 126 hectare lot of former agricultural land near Porters Lane. It is divided into a range of land uses including environmental education, sport and recreation, community facilities, ecological parkland, environmental protection areas and housing. It is also home to the Maleny Golf Club and the aquatic centre. Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston acknowledged the efforts of former local councillor Jenny McKay and retiring Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley in bringing the trails to fruition. Jenny McKay and Jim Soorley were instrumental in sourcing funding and support for the trail network, Cr Johnston said. The Unitywater wetlands were established in the precinct in 2014 as a natural way to filter out nutrients, pollutants and sediments from treated water passing through. Council and Unitywater have worked closely to construct the trail network and install signs, which opens up even more of this special precinct to our community. Unitywater Chairman Jim Soorley said a $17 million upgrade to the Maleny Sewage Treatment Plant was undertaken in 2014. As part of the works, we established the wetland and planted an irrigated forest which form part of the sewage treatment process the wetlands take up treated effluent discharged from the STP and remove nutrients and sediments, he said. It’s a wonderful way we can use nature to help us do our job. The added benefit of this process is that we can provide a beautiful recreational area for locals and visitors to enjoy. Our contribution to this precinct is just one of the ways Unitywater gives back to our communities and through our commitment to innovation, we’ll continue to deliver sustainable solutions to complement our traditional water and sewerage services.
