24.01.2022 Great grandmother Marie Orr is just $231 away from shaving her head as part of the Virtual Sunshine Walk 2020 . Mrs Orr, 75 of Wodonga, set a fundraising target of $5000 and has already reached $4769, well ahead of her big chop on November 22. Mrs Orr, who will walk as part of the Hearts of Howlong team, said she felt indebted to the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Inc after it helped save the life of her husband, Bill.... Bill, 83, was treated for prostate cancer last year, and underwent surgery for bowel cancer in August. Mrs Orr said her husband had 38 treatments which would have meant multiple trips to Melbourne without the local cancer centre. "Having the cancer centre and all the facilities here was just wonderful," she said. To support Marie, click on the link in the comments section below

23.01.2022 Here's a little warm-up for today's walk provided by our sponsors Healthfocus Physiotherapy.

23.01.2022 We are thrilled to have Rivalea on board for a second year, with 36 teams now signed up for the Virtual Sunshine Walk 2020! Although not able to come together with the community this year, Team Captain Nicole Griffin said the group was looking forward to still being able to make a difference. "Last year we thought as a work group that it would be nice to help raise some funds for the cancer centre given we knew there were a few employees, family and friends using the faciliti...es in Albury at the time," she said. "While our walking team was quite small, our support crew behind the scene assisted in making over $7000, which we thought was a great achievement. "It was great to be part of such a large walking group and this helped us get to the finish line of the 20km event. "Hopefully we can build some excitement into our individual walking tracks this year and help raise funds for such a great cause." 22.01.2022 As well as caring for patients on the ward, nurses at the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre are also committed to walking alongside those impacted by cancer out in the community. Team Chemo Chicks comprises Ramsay Health Care nurses who will participate in their second Sunshine Walk this year. Captain, Kim Foulkes, said the team was looking forward to being able to get out and show their support through the new virtual format this year.... We work in day oncology but it’s so much more than that, she said. It’s actually being part of the community and we walk alongside the patients on their journey. But it’s also just so good to be able to do this in the current climate with COVID-19, and still show our support online. Pictured taking part in last year's Sunshine Walk were Chemo chicks team members, Mon, Meredith, Kim and Robyn. 21.01.2022 Georgia Cargill (pictured centre) will walk 10km on Sunday for her dad, Geoff, who was diagnosed with cancer this year. She said as expected, this came as an "incredible shock" to her dad and her family. "The Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre has been a saviour for our family," she said.... "With this centre being close to us, it ensured our dad did not have to travel a long distance to receive treatment. "Along with the fantastic staff and incredible support, the centre is a fantastic resource for our community that offers a great diversity in care and treatment. "We want to thank them for everything they have done for our dad and continue to do so. "We also want to show our dad how incredibly proud we are of him and his strength during this difficult time." Pictured with Georgia and her dad is her mum, Donna, brother Kristian and sister Jess. They will walk with friends as part of team "Walkaholics". 19.01.2022 As a team, the Blue Wrens have worked with, cared for and emotionally provided support for those living with cancer. Although none of them have personally had, nor have cancer, they still strongly believe that supporting those who are affected by cancer is very important and are taking part in the Virtual Sunshine Walk 2020 on Sunday, November 22. "Our team is made up of health care professionals including an ex-nurse, a speech pathologist and a diversional therapist," capta...in Amie Hancock said. "Our speech pathologist works directly with people who have head and neck cancer. Wanting to help people living with these conditions is the reason why she became a speech pathologist. "Our team name was inspired by a loved one, June, who recently passed away and her favourite animals were blue wrens. "Whilst contemplating a team name, a blue wren started frolicking outside the window and I knew our loved one was with us, and chose our team name in her memory. "June also recently lost her husband to prostate cancer. "As a team we would like to take part in this walk to support our loved ones and others now and in the future coping with the impacts of cancer." Amie is pictured in the first photo and the second is of June with Blue Wren team members, Natalie with her baby, and Jenny. 18.01.2022 Just over 18 years ago, Cec Kohlhagen was diagnosed with bowel cancer. While it wasn't directly related to his passing on October 2, his son Brett said it was the start of long-running health battles. "Dad fought for almost 20 years, so I thought I should at the very least navigate myself around 20 kilometres in the Virtual Sunshine Walk," he said.... Brett is captain of 'The Walking Wounded', a team of 25 who have mostly been touched by cancer in one way or another. Most team members are from the Walla-Walbundrie region, with ages varying from 10 to 70. Apart from honouring the memory of his dad, Brett had another good reason to take part in the walk and support the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Inc "I know the relief it gives families from small country towns like Walla and Walbundrie to have their loved ones treated on the Border rather than having to travel to Melbourne," he said. Pictured are members of the Kohlhagen family, left to right, Brett, Jill, Luke, Derek, Cec and Grant. To show your support for team Walking Wounded, click on the link in the comments section below

12.01.2022 As a young apprentice, one of Ben Haslam’s main concerns when he was first diagnosed with cancer was that he could lose his job. But not only did his work give him all the time off that he needed, they have also decided to give back to the facility that helped save his life. KBC Plumbing has entered a team in the Virtual Sunshine Walk 2020, with the aim of raising $15,000 for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Inc... Owner Kade Bell-Chambers said that when Ben, 19, was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in March, it sent shock waves through his small business. Earlier this year, Ben hadn’t been feeling well and found a lump in his neck, he said. He’s like family to us and so when we found out it was Hodgkin Lymphoma, it was devastating. Ben underwent surgery to have the lump removed followed by six months of chemotherapy. He finished treatment on September 22. Ben considers himself extremely fortunate to have been able to have his treatment not far from his home in Thurgoona, and to also have the support of his work. I was very lucky to not have to worry about having a job to come back to, he said. I love my work and everyone I work with. The fact that they’re doing this fundraiser to help other people and the cancer centre is fantastic. Six staff members at KBC Plumbing have pledged to shave their heads, while a further three will colour their hair. The team, which has already raised more than $5000, hopes to reach $15,000 before undergoing their dramatic transformations on Friday, November 20. Mr Cochrane is one of 12 team members from the Daintree Medical Centre, soon to be renamed Umbrella Health Wodonga, which is owned by his company Umbrella Health. The team, Walk DMC, has entered the walk with the hope of raising $10,000 for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Inc.... Team members completing the 20km distance will walk from the medical centre in Daintree Way, Wodonga, to the new clinic being built within The Hamilton building on the corner of Hume St and David St, Albury, and back. If their fundraising goal is achieved, Mr Cochrane, who is the Chief Executive of Umbrella Health, will run 20km in a yellow tutu before joining his team for the 20km walk. If running in a yellow tutu will help raise funds to build a stronger cancer centre and therefore better outcomes for our patients, then I’m more than happy to do it," he said. The medical centre will donate $1 from every consultation for the week of November 16, which will be matched by the doctors. Patients will also be invited to chip in an extra dollar when paying for their visit.

After the opening ceremony is streamed live from 7am, participants will be challenged to walk their selected distance anywhere in ...their community, and share their photos and experiences online. Trust Fund Manager, Kristy McMahon, said a virtual event would allow the Sunshine Walk community to stay connected and achieve something positive together in these uncertain times. The health and safety of our participants, spectators and volunteers is our number one priority, with cancer patients being among the most vulnerable to COVID-19, she said. A virtual event will allow everyone including cancer patients and their carers to participate in their own socially-distanced walk, and to connect with other participants via social media and the website. Participants will be encouraged to dress up for the walk and share their photos, with prizes awarded to those who go to the most effort. There are also challenge cups for individuals and teams that raise the most money. Beer Deluxe manager, Bart Furst, said the inaugural brew of Sunshine XPA in 2019 had been a huge success and had helped his team raise thousands of dollars for the Albury Wodonga Regiona...l Cancer Centre Trust Fund Inc, through their Sunshine Walk campaign. People have been asking for this beer all year, and it will be worth the wait, Mr Furst said. The best thing about it though is that a percentage of every beer sold goes to a cause near and dear to our hearts." 03.01.2022 After losing three members in three months, the Virtual Sunshine Walk 2020 will be both a heartening and solemn event for Brave Hearts on the Murray Inc this year. The Border cancer support group has 16 members signed up for the November 22 walk, and hopes to raise at least $4000 for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust Fund Inc. Team captain, Janine McGrath, said Brave Hearts were passionate supporters of the cancer centre because they have seen first-hand how vit...al the facility is for Border residents battling cancer. But Miss McGrath said the cause was all the more close to their hearts following the loss of long-time members, Di Laundess, Ian Moreland and Brenda Konecnik to cancer in May, June and July respectively. Brenda was our Sunshine Walk ambassador and we want to fulfil her dream of not only participating in this year’s event, but raising as much money as we can, she said Brave Hearts’ oldest member, Thelma Wright, did her bit today by walking Albury’s main street to raise awareness of the event. Whilst I’m not as active as I was, I still want to be involved and do anything I can do to help, the 82-year-old said. Miss McGrath said Thelma was a prime example of how Brave Hearts come together to support not only the needs of the community, but also the organisation and individual members. Today, with Thelma leading the way, we are showcasing our mantra of love, courage and support," she said.
