15.01.2022 {SUNSOAKED MUSE} - China Machado "Own yourself, own your beauty." - China Machado China Machado was a fashion trailblazer, she lived, breathed and respected the world of fashion. Muse, editor, fashion director, gallerist and designer. She often referred to herself as a "vagabond", wanting to experience every element of life to ensure she crafted her own happiness. ... In 1959 China became one of the first non-white models to be featured in the pages of Harper's Bazaar. Christened the "muse" of famous Bazaar photographer Richard Avedon - who put his illustrious career on the line in order to have China featured in the magazine as she didn't fit the magazine's ‘racial mould’ (at that time). It wasn't the only boundary the two would push with China being the first nude photographed for the magazine in 1961. She went on to become a Senior Fashion Editor and then Fashion Director of the magazine and was integral in the introduction of Lear magazine, aimed at the over 50's fashion set. At 81 she signed with IMG models, where she was recognised for championing the success of younger models with her "Own yourself, own your beauty" mindset. China broke the race barrier and the age barrier and went on to become one of TIME Magazine's 2020 - 100 Women of the Year!
