25.01.2022 Within a day of each other two fish that were tagged in estuaries were recaptured offshore . A tagged Mangrove Jack was speared at Masthead Reef off Gladstone that was tagged 2.2 years earlier at Turkey Beach. A tagged Golden Snapper (Fingermark) was recaptured offshore north of Yeppoon having been tagged in the Narrows 1.3 years earlier. These recaptures help build the picture of juveniles of species growing up inshore and then moving offshore.

23.01.2022 Here is a Saddletail Snapper (Largemouth Nannygai) that was tagged in the Shoalwater Bay area in 2016 and just recaptured off St Bees Island north of Mackay having moved 213km. It grew from 390mm to 740mm and was 6.04kg when recaptured. It is not unusual for juveniles to travel long distances when they become adults.

22.01.2022 The records continue to fall. Suntag member John Boon recently tagged this cracking 152cm King Threadfin in Rocky. Awesome fish John and a new record for a tagged and released King for Suntag

21.01.2022 Moving residence. This Bass was tagged in Lake Cressbrook back in 2008 and recaptured recently in Lake Wivenhoe. It is only the second fish from Cressbrook recaptured in Wivenhoe and there have only been 5 fish recaptured below the dam. There's a good chance that it went over the dam wall during the 2011 flooding.

20.01.2022 Our historic tag data suggests that 11 years after tagging most Barramundi in the Fitzroy River will no longer be there. Here is one that just eclipsed that threshold. Tagged back in 2008 in 12 Mile Creek it was recaptured 11.5 years later in the Calliope River. It grew 820mm from 310mm to 1130mm. Photo is of the actual fish when recaptured. It moved 95km by shortest water route.

14.01.2022 There is some concern over the survival of large fish that are tagged and released. Those concerns are valid if fish are handled poorly. However handled carefully big fish can survive. Here is a Murray Cod tagged back in 2016 that was recently recaptured in Lake Glenlyon. At around 1050mm it hadn't grown any since release but that is not unusual for large fish. This definitely qualifies as a trophy fish and was released again.

13.01.2022 Sometimes it's hard to see the bigger picture. Over the years we have recorded over 60 Mangrove Jack tagged in rivers and estuaries that have been recaptured over 50km from where tagged. Most moved offshore but some moved to another system. This is a bigger picture view of those movements. It is not hard to see some patterns emerging.

06.01.2022 In the 30+ years of Suntag there has only been 1 Barramundi that has moved over 1,000km - until now. A fish stocked into Bedford Weir at Blackwater on the Mackenzie River at 170mm in 2014 has been recaptured in the Proserpine River at 1,150mm. It travelled all the way down the Fitzroy River then did a left turn up the coast and ended up 1,050km from where it was released.

03.01.2022 This Bass was tagged in the Noosa River at 245mm back in 2012. It was recently recaptured 8.5 years later and hadn't grown any at all. The graph shows the growth of Bass in the Noosa and a number of impoundments. Lake Maroon has the slowest growth rate and Noosa is on a par with Advancetown (Hinze). After 5 years the Noosa bass only average 60mm in growth while in Somerset it is 125mm or double that of Noosa.
