23.01.2022 Repost from @wellness.uncovered : Cook more from scratch! Cooking food from scratch is a wonderful life skill to master and a great creative outlet, but above all, it is the best way to make sure you and your family are getting quality nutrients from REAL food. And it doesn’t have to be hard or boring! To start you off, here’s my berry crumble recipe. It’s super quick and simple to make. It works as a healthy breakfast or dessert, and it’s a real crowd pleaser. ... I’ve recently started adding an apple to the berries - cooking the apple with the skin for 8-10 minutes releases the pectin which aids in healing and sealing the gut lining. Gut Healing Berry Crumble: 1 kg mixed berries (frozen is fine) 1-2 apples (diced, skin on) 1-2 teaspoons cinnamon combine the above ingredients in a pot and simmer on medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once bubbling, reduce to a low simmer. In the meantime, make your crumb: heat 1-2 tablespoons ghee or coconut oil in a pan and add 1/2 cup each of: Almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans coconut chips, desiccated coconut... you can use any nuts or seeds you have on hand. Roughly chop them or blitz in the food processor. Stir through the melted ghee or oil in med-high heat until golden and crispy (about 10 minutes). Stir continually and keep your eye on it or it might burn. Once berries and apples are cooked though, pour the crumb over and serve. Will you give this simple recipe a go? 18.01.2022 Repost from @wellness.uncovered: Drink more water This is such a simple thing to do! free, easy, no excuses! Proper hydration is so fundamental to our health, it can literally change your life. With a loss of only 2% of the water in our body, we begin to experience early signs of dehydration: irritability, anxiety, depression, fatigue, headaches, cramps and cravings (next time you experience a craving, reach for a glass of water instead of food. You will be amazed to ...see those hunger cues disappear. Overtime you will learn to better understand your body’s messages) When we become more chronically dehydrated, we may experience migraines, constipation, joint pain, back pain, acid reflux, fibromyalgia and colitis. Water does so much in our body, it’s needed for proper function of every cell in the body. For removal of waste and detoxification, digestion, lubrication of joints, cushioning of our organs, our blood viscosity which, in turn affects our hormonal function, cardiovascular health, our brain and the body’s natural ability to heal and function optimally. Many people believe they drink enough, but beverages such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, juice and wine actually have a diuretic affect, meaning they cause the kidneys to flush water out, and actually cause dehydration. To work out how much water you need to drink per day, simply divide your body weight (kg) in 30 to get the number of liters of pure water you should be drinking per day. For the imperial measurement simply divide your body weight in half for the number of oz. The above calculation will give you the minimum amount of pure water needed for your body, allow more if you are active or live in a hot climate, and allow an extra 1.5 cups of water for every cup of diuretic consumed. If you struggle to drink pure water, here are some of my tips: get creative! Add lemon, mint, a cinnamon stick or even a pinch of salt (salt will aid water absorption) Drink a big glass of water upon waking. Take a drink bottle EVERYWHERE Reduce you intake of diuretics Will you make Drink More Water your new year’s resolution? Photo credit @tracybeveridgephotography See more

09.01.2022 Repost @wellness.uncovered Our human body hosts 40 thousand different species of bacteria, 5 million species of fungi, and 300 thousand species of parasites, in fact we have more bacteria cells in us than human cells. We have about 20 thousand human genes, but up to 20 million bacteria genes making us less than 1% human!! This is our microbiome. We are a beautiful complex ecosystem. The microbiome impacts everything about our health - Digestion, nutrient absorption, how we f...eel, our mood, our energy, our cravings, our sleep, our hormones, our immune system, how medications affect us, literally every aspect of our health. Maintaining a healthy microbiome is essential to our well being and longevity. Everything we do affects our microbiome, from the foods we eat, through the chemicals we are exposed to, to our stress levels and even our thoughts. Things like taking antibiotics, eating processed foods, living in a state of chronic stress are just some of the things that negatively impact our microbiome and set the stage for dysfunction and disease. If you want to look after your microbiome and tend to your garden as @drmarkhyman puts it so beautifully, there are some simple strategies you can start implementing today: eat whole foods with a VARIETY of colourful organic seasonal veggies and plenty of leafy greens every day. reduce your stress levels. move your body. make sleep and rest a priority. reduce your exposure to toxins. get out in nature, touch the soil. think positive thoughts. eat fermented foods every day. This last one should have been at the top of this list. This is how we inoculate our biome with beneficial bacteria. Diversity is key, so having a variety of different cultures foods and fermented veggies is important. Think sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, kefir, yogurt - all can be easily bought at health food shops or you can make them at home. Each of these provide different strands of bacteria, and the more diverse the microbiome is, the healthier it is. I like to have a few going on in my kitchen at any one time. White & purple sauerkraut & kombucha atm. Just 1-2 tbsp per day is all you need to help your garden thrive See more
