02.01.2022 It certainly is exciting and interesting times in the sheep and wool industry! After attending Bendigo Sheep and Wool Show over the weekend, we just wanted to s...hare a few of our thoughts and views at Leahcim on a couple of issues. The mulesing debate is back in the headlines especially with MLAs managing director saying it is a sheep meat issue as well as a wool industry issue! However there has been a trend in the last few years with many of the Merino seed stock producers to put wrinkle and heavy skins back on the sheep with the perception of achieving higher fleece weights. These type of animals are low for Eye Muscle depth and fat cover, which has a negative impact on fertility as well as eating quality and lean meat yield. These animals require mulesing, and the wools are generally higher in suint content which leads to discoloured wools that dont handle the weather and attract flies. The industry is telling us it is simply a matter of time before eating quality and lean meat yield will be measured and paid accordingly throughout meat processors in Australia. At Leahcim we believe it is our moral obligation as a seed stock producer to not only produce the most profitable animal for our commercial clients, but also focus on meeting the end consumers expectations. So as for these couple of issues facing the industry; we have not mulesed since for 2004, and are continuing to identify sheep that are suitable for this and testing for high follicle density to ensure we achieve maximum potential out of these soft, plain skins. We are not telling you to stop mulesing, that is your decision, but ensure you are in a position that one day when you have to cease mulesing you are in a position you are able to. There is a belief that there is no market signals for non mulesed wool however we are informed by our wool agents we receive around 70cents above market value, and one of our clients has recently undertaken the Responsible Wool Standard accreditation and is receiving as much as 150 cents above market value for their wool. Genetic fat and muscle as well as eating quality and lean meat yield has been at the forefront of our selection criteria over the last 5 years. Through this we have seen a massive increase in the fertility of our flock (there are some interesting data and graphs on this matter in our newsletters which will be sent out this week). Our Lean Meat Yield and eating quality figures are continuing to improve with each generation and through the use of JIVET and other breeding technologies we are able to make these gains more rapidly. It is a matter of being proactive rather than reactive to issues that are facing the industry in the future. See more
