25.01.2022 Get ready for another Super Kids HQ Room Reveal... its transport! It even includes the awesome traffic lights that actually work!! We frequently change around items and themes at HQ for a few reasons: 1) Often times individuals with autism have a difficult time with transition or change so we include the change into the environment for opportunities to practice tolerating change, often in a fun and positive way. 2) To make sure that we have a variety of potentially reinforcing activities available. This makes it more interesting for both the learners and therapists This can also help expand the learners repertoire of potential reinforcers

25.01.2022 BOO! Have an eek-tastic Halloween! Hope your all having a delicious treat today From the Super Kids Team

25.01.2022 ..... Assessment and Treatment of Food Selectivity Food selectivity is a fairly common issue with children who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many children who have been diagnosed with an ASD have difficulties with rigidity and a preference for sameness. This holds true for their food preferences as well and can be very distressing for parents and caregivers Common issues include problem behaviour at mealtime, picky eating, frequent food refusals, limited repertoires of foods, excessive intake of a few foods, and selective intake of certain food categories such as carbohydrates Talk to your Super Kids Behaviour Consultant or email [email protected] to discuss how can can help your child

24.01.2022 Adding Value to Play Play is important for childrens learning and development, as well as important to develop interests and alternatives to inappropriate behaviours. There are many ways that we can add value to your childs play to show them that we are lots of fun, and that the toys around them are lots of fun. Some of our favourite ways at Super Kids to do this are: Follow your childs lead Spend some time going along with what your child is interested in. You ...can play with them with the toys they are already interested in and follow along with how they are playing. This can show them that we know what they enjoy doing and can make those activities and us even more fun for them! Show them new ideas As well as following your childs lead, you can also show them some new things that they can do with toys. Try to show your child three different ways to play with a toy (e.g. with a train track you could build the track, push the trains on the track, or pretend to crash). That way, we are showing them new ways to play with different toys, or new toys which might help to expand their interests. Talk about what is happening Make comments about what you can see, what you are doing, and what your child is doing. Try to stick to simple language so your child may be able to copy you if they want to. As a general rule, you can speak in sentences roughly 1-2 words longer than what they are currently speaking in. That way, it is short enough that they might be able to copy you if they want to, but still exposes them to more complex language. This is a great way to use natural opportunities to build upon your childs language. Minimise demands Try not to give your child instructions or ask questions during play, because this can make play very demanding for them we want play to be fun and relaxing for them! It can also be a good time to show them that even if we give lots of instructions at other times in the day, sometimes we are just fun too! See more

23.01.2022 Adding value to play & increasing language TIP #1: Talk about what is happening At Super Kids we suggest making comments about what you can see, what you are doing, and what your child is doing Try to stick to simple language so your child may be able to copy you if they want to As a general rule, you can speak in sentences roughly 1-2 words longer than what they are currently speaking in. That way, it is short enough that they might be able to copy you if they want to, but still exposes them to more complex language This is a great way to use natural opportunities to build upon your child’s language.

23.01.2022 Weather theme to brighten up HQ this month lots of dress-ups and sensory experiences to learn about the weather, seasons and temperature

22.01.2022 Following instructions related to health and safety it is so important to ensure that each learner is able to follow directions from others to ensure their safety and to allow safe movement through the community. These skills may include waiting responding to instruction stop holding hands or walking beside an adult and following one step instructions such as sit down, stand up, hands down or wait here this will allow you to feel more confident when in the community (even if these opportunities are very limited at the moment!), keep your child safe, reduce chances or problem behaviour There is no reason to delay teaching as these are skills that you can be practicing at home now

22.01.2022 Super Kids HQ Room Reveal Sports month has been a busy theme for our learners this month lots of opportunities for gross motor play and it has been wonderful to see how confident our learners have become with the new activities over the last few days already success!!

21.01.2022 What is a BCBA BCBA stands for a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. The Behaviour Analysis Certification Board (BACB) is the professional certification board that oversees the certification process for individuals wanting to become behaviour analysts. Behaviour analysts practice a systematic approach for influencing socially important behavior through the identification of reliably related environmental variables and the production of behaviour change techniques to appl...y those findings. The BACB provides a minimum standard to be qualified to practice behaviour analysis. There are three different levels, including BCBA-D, BCBA and BCaBA. Each level of certification represents a different amount of university and supervised experience. For more information and why this is important, you can check out: www.bacb.com/become-credentialed/ See more

21.01.2022 Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) It is imperative that children are able to ask or comment about something iso they do not need to use problem behaviour to communicate what they want or need PECS is a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). It can support the language and communication development for individuals who do not have vocal speech. There is no evidence to suggest that it will hinder vocal speech development, but there is research to... suggest that it will support it. At Super Kids PECS is one of the AAC options in our communication toolbox We may initially teach the child how to request for highly preferred toys and activities by handing over a corresponding picture card Talk to your Super Kids Behaviour Consultant if you have any questions or would like more information about how we can support your child's communication See more

20.01.2022 Amelia, Chloe & Hayley have been busy training this week with the amazing Dr Evelyn Gould They learnt more about a developmentally appropriate model of psychological flexibility for kids and adults & how best to apply with our learners. Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the DNA-V model is a scientific and holistic way to help your child learn how to discover their talents, connect with their feelings, use their minds, learn how to be with themselves, and make friends and social connections The model is designed to work developmentally with kids from 5 or 6 upwards. It has been made for kids, based on a developmental awareness of what kids can do and what they need to do to reach their full potential cant wait to share more with you all soon!

18.01.2022 Getting ready for school or preschool in 2021 At Super Kids we know that this can be an overwhelming decision and there is lots of consider Therefore, we have created our Choosing a Childcare Service and Choosing a School handbook guides which discuss: What to look for when choosing a school Our School Checklist guide What questions to ask when touring or meeting with the school... What you can expect What your child is entitled to If you would like your free copy of either guide please email us [email protected]

18.01.2022 What is reinforcement Reinforcement (sometimes called rewards) occurs after behaviour, and results in that behaviour occurring more in the future We can use reinforcement to teach new skills and help your child use these skills all the time. There are lots of examples of reinforcement in our day to day lives such as rewarding your child with their favourite ice-cream after they eat vegetables, getting paid after going to work, or getting praise from the family after cooking a new meal. Reinforcers come in different forms and might be: Edible (e.g. a piece of chocolate, crackers) Tangible items (e.g. a favourite teddy bear, iPad) Social (e.g. tickles, praise) Activities (e.g. going to the park, riding a bike)

17.01.2022 Happy, Relaxed and Engaged (HRE) This is what we strive for with all of our clients (and staff!). We aim to learn about our kids by listening! At Super Kids we want to teach and create a context in which they are happy, relaxed, and engaged, one in which they will feel safe and in control. We hope that you’re enjoying yourselves over the break too and doing all of the things you enjoy

17.01.2022 Encouraging flexibility & toleration One of the diagnostic criteria for Autism is restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests or activities Some of our learners may have a lot of difficulty tolerating changes to their routine, novel situations or other changes Having a usual routine is not an issue many adults like to stick to a routine as well however it is important that we are able to tolerate changes because unpredictable things can and do happen. ...It may become an issue if our learners behaviour around changes to routine interferes with learning, is severe or intense, or has the potential to harm themselves or others other times we may need to teach toleration to daily living activities such as hair cuts, brushing teeth or cutting nails talk to your Super Kids Behaviour Consultant if you would like to incorporate this into your childs ABA program See more

17.01.2022 At Super Kids we are still making sure that our team are able to come together on World Autism Acceptance/Awareness Day to recognise people with Autism and those who love and support them It is a day for all individuals on the autism spectrum regardless of gender, nationality or race. Its a day to recognise the very real struggles they face and celebrate the wonderful contribution that they make to our community and how proud we are of each individual @autismawareaus

16.01.2022 We work with many multilingual families and they often ask what language(s) their child should learn and be taught in Some studies showed that there were no significant group differences in language levels between children raised in bilingual vs. monolingual homes; moreover, bilingually exposed children with autism do not experience additional delays in language development There are many important things to take into account but this is an interesting review of the research when considering selection for bilingual versus monolingual education https://asatonline.org//language-considerations-bilingua/

09.01.2022 Teaching hand washing This is an example of how we use visual feedback (UV glow cream) to show the learner how and where to wash their hands in the moment also a fun way to check after the child has washed their hands and do a spot check its still so important that we continue to exercise safe hygiene practices, wash our hands effectively and dont become complacent even though the curve is starting to flatten

This can mean teaching and modelling different ways to play with the same objects For example, we might to do this balls: Racing balls down the ball drop Dropping the balls at different speeds Catching the balls in buckets at the end Thr...owing the into the cylinder Taking turns Kicking, rolling or throwing the balls See more

06.01.2022 LOTS of circus fun to be had this week at HQ we love to find different ways to include the interests of our learners in on our monthly theme as well as expanding on them! These are some of the activities we have available this week @ Super Kids Behavioural Consulting

06.01.2022 Tips for supporting your childs speech and language development Talk to your child when you play and do activities together Follow your childs lead and comment on items and activities that they are showing interest in, for example, blue truck as your child is playing with transport toys. You can also comment about everyday activities (e.g. brushing teeth) or events (e.g. daddys home). Keep it short Use short, simple sentences so your child can attempt to co...py what you are saying. Expand on what your child is saying Start using sentence that have one more word than what the child is currently using. You can add on an action word (drive car), colour (red car), size (big block), or person (my bottle). Reduce questions Reduce the number of questions that you ask your child during the day and during play. Parents often ask their children lots of questions when they want their child to talk more. These are unnecessary demands that can make play hard work for your child! Instead, comment and label actions and items during play. Repeat what your child says If your child is making vocalisations (e.g.: mmmm baba) or attempting to say words, repeating what they are saying and taking turns can show your child that you are listening to them and make it into a fun activity. Singing songs When singing a song with your child and miss out the last line of the song and wait for your child to finish it. For example, twinkle twinkle little Create opportunities for communication Rather than assuming all of your childs wants and needs, create opportunities and wait for them to initiate. For example, have the childs favourite toy out of reach so they have to ask you for it. For more tips, check out our blog on https://www.superkidsconsulting.com/resources/blog/my-post See more

06.01.2022 SPACE THEME at Super Kids HQ it is out of this world we are loving the display and new activities available to our learners this month cant wait to share some more of our space themed activities that we will have available - many novel this to comment on, play with and explore @ Super Kids Behavioural Consulting

05.01.2022 Why are Super Kids programs so successful?! Our team uses Precision Teaching which is a systematic and precise method of evaluating instructional tactics and curricula the guiding principles include 1 focus on directly observable behaviour behaviours that can be counted and recorded, such as dressing, talking or reading 2 frequency as a measure of performance if the child can perform the skill fluently (accurately and frequently) then they are more likely going t...o be able to perform the skill for longer periods of time and with more distractions over other measurements 3 the Standard Celeration Chart we use a standardised chart to record teaching that is easy for parents, therapists and clinicians to access and keep track of your child’s progress (thanks @centralreach ) 4 the learner knows best the program must be individualised and appropriate to your child otherwise it needs to be changed! See more

04.01.2022 STAFF SPOTLIGHT This is Lisa Lisa is one of our fabulous, experienced Behaviour Technicians She has worked as a Behaviour Technician in home and as a Shadow in both preschool and school environments. 04.01.2022 MAINTENANCE OF SKILLS Maintenance is when your child keeps performing a skill they have learnt without intensive teaching. When we are initially teaching, we might practice the skill quite often. However, these opportunities might not always come up as often in the natural environment. For example, when teaching a child how to tie their laces, we might practice it 5 times in an hour, but usually they would only need to practice this once or twice a day. It is important for... your child to maintain the skills we teach because we don’t want them to lose skills, and it would be very time consuming to continue to practice all skills intensively! Some tips for maintaining skills: Slowly reduce amount of practice (e.g. multiple times daily, then once daily, then three times a week, then weekly etc.) Give them extra practice if they are not able to perform the skill anymore it is likely that with a little extra practice, they will quickly pick up the skill again Use precision teaching when teaching a skill and make sure that it has meet mastery & is fluent before considering the skill mastered Only teach functional skills! If the vocabulary or skill that you're teaching the child is not relevant or functional to them then they are not going to access frequent practice (therefore it probably shouldn't have been taught in the first place) - goodbye maintenance checklists or portions of the child's valuable ABA session being allocated to this!

04.01.2022 Important considerations during your ABA program Generalisation is when children are able to use skills they learn in one context in other contexts. This might be with new people, in new places or situations, or when it is presented in a different way Generalising skills is important so that your child is able to use all the skills they have learnt in lots of different ways For example, being able to follow instructions with a new teacher, in a new classroom and when in...structions are given in different ways. Some tips for generalising skills: - Practice skills in a natural setting - Use natural reinforcers - Practice with different people - Practice in different places - Practice with different things - Reinforcement

03.01.2022 The Super Kids School Decision Checklist These are some of the decision points that will help you decide and narrow down your choice of schools based on what your family needs and values There are different questions to consider for all of these points and your Super Kids Behaviour Consultant can help expand on these with you This includes... 1) Diagnosis - based on if your child has a diagnosis and what diagnosis your child has and the level of support they requir...e, as they may be eligible for different schools and class types - such as an ASD specific class or school. 2) Physical access - will the school require modifications for your child to attend such as a ramp or nappy change. 3) Safety - Can the school keep your child safe? Have the staff received or willing to receive appropriate training? Is the physical environment appropriate, such as fences? What are the school policies related to this? if youd like to learn more, then email [email protected] and we can send you a copy of our detailed School Information Handbook See more

01.01.2022 Teaching throughout the day (not just during ABA sessions!) While therapy sessions help your child get intensive practice of learning new skills, it is important that they also practice these skills outside of sessions so they can demonstrate these skills in different places and with different people. This practice throughout everyday life is called incidental teaching Before you start teaching a new skill: 1 Identify an opportunity 2 Identify a potential reward f...or the skill 3 Set up the environment 4 Check that your child is paying attention 5 Give the instruction 6 Help (prompt) them if they need it 7 Give reward for the best response For more information about how to utilise each of these steps, check out of blog on Teaching Outside of ABA Sessions: https://www.superkidsconsulting.com//teaching-outside-of-a
