25.01.2022 Want to do a side split? Do you have the bones for it? The shape of our bones are pretty much set by the time we reach puberty. That's also why a lot of young g...ymnasts are washed out of their programs at that early age because you cannot train your bones to be more flexible. You can train your soft tissues to do that, but not the bones. After you reach the point of diminishing returns in stretching the soft tissues, your bones hit compression and you cannot go any further. If you do, injuries will be your best friend. You either have the bones or you don't. It's in your DNA. Learn all about #boneanatomy and #skeletalvariation in our next #anatomy trainings. 25.01.2022 Each day as you step onto the mat, make a decision to enjoy just where you are right now. Take a few moments, too, to contemplate how fortunate you are to be... practicing this wonderful art. A casual glance at the morning paper is proof enough of the vast suffering, poverty, violence, and homelessness that is the lot of so many human beings. If you are standing on a yoga mat, and have the time to practice even fifteen minutes, you are a fortunate person. ~ Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit by Donna Farhi (2000) See more

24.01.2022 What is Interoception? Interoception is the sense of the physiological condition of the body. Feeling and listening into our body from within. Interoception ex...tends into our musculoskeletal body as well as our organs. How we feel about what we feel is present in our movement self as well as our physiological self. Therefore, whether it's stretching in #yinyoga or rolling on a #myofascialrelease ball, the slower you go, the more you feel (I call it inner listening). This slow movement allows the mind to move beyond the actual activity (proprioception), and shifts our attention to how movements feel in the body (interoception). Slowing down deepens our parasympathetic responses and increases our interoceptive awareness. Learn more about these interoceptors in our #fascia in our next Myofascial Release Teacher Training. 23.01.2022 Beneath the skin is our fats, also known as the adipose. This adipose is divided into two layers by a thin continuous line of connective tissue known as the Sup...erficial Fascia. The layer above the SF is the superficial adipose and the layer below is the deep adipose. The SF acts as an insulator and thermo-regulator, helping to maintain a constant body temperature. It is responsible for exteroception, our perception of outside pressure. It is also metabolically active: it stores fat as fuel for metabolic function and releases it in response to stimuli. It is responsible for any alteration of the skin, including cellulitis. It is very well innervated with vessels and veins and is in charge of our lymphatic drainage. When there's excess fluid retention, lymphedema can occur. In #ChineseMedicine, this is where the ancient Wei Qi (Protective Qi) circulates. The SF acts as a sponge in our body to constantly squeeze and push out water (waste products) and allows water to flow back in. If this layer is too rigid, it can be an indication of the presence of excess water and waste products. Regular #myofascialrelease #ballrolling, #massage or #stretching can be very beneficial to wring out excess water and waste trapped in this layer. 18.01.2022 ..."There is a contradiction in wanting to be perfectly secure in a universe whose very nature is momentariness and fluidity. But the contradiction lies a littl...e deeper than the mere conflict between the desire for security and the fact of change. If I want to be secure, that is, protected from the flux of life, I am wanting to be separate from life. Yet it is this very sense of separateness which makes me feel insecure. To be secure means to isolate and fortify the I, but it is just the feeling of being an isolated I which makes me feel lonely and afraid. In other words, the more security I can get, the more I shall want. To put it still more plainly: the desire for security and the feeling of insecurity are the same thing. To hold your breath is to lose your breath. A society based on the quest for security is nothing but a breath-retention contest in which everyone is as taut as a drum and as purple as a beet." 14.01.2022 One of the most beautiful men of this century was Maharishi Raman. He was a simple man, uneducated, but he did not accept the ideology, th...e religion in which he was born. When he was only seventeen years of age he left his home in search of truth. He meditated the hills of Arunachal in south India, and finally realized himself. After that his whole teaching consisted only of three words, because those three words had revealed to him the whole mystery of existence. His philosophy is the shortest. What are those three words? Whoever came to him -- because as he became slowly slowly known, people started coming to him from all over the world -- his whole teaching was to sit silently and ask only one question: "Who am I?" and go on asking that question. One day the question will disappear, and only you will be there. That is the answer. Not that you will find the answer written somewhere; you will find yourself. You just go on digging with this question -- this question is like digging -- but do you see the question? It is a doubt: Who am I? It does not accept the spiritualist who says you are a soul . And he says this is enough. If you can go on and on and on patiently, one day the question suddenly disappears and what is left is your reality. That is the answer. And the moment you know yourself you have known everything that is worth knowing. Osho The God Conspiracy . The path from superstition to superconsciousness.

12.01.2022 Fascia 101 with @jopheeyinyoga Fasciacytes are a new class of #fasciae cells devoted to producing the hyaluronanrich extracellular matrix (ECM) of the human bo...dy. Hyaluronan occurs between deep #fascia and muscle, facilitating gliding between these two structures, and also within the loose connective tissue of the fascia, guaranteeing the smooth sliding of adjacent fibrous fascial layers. It also promotes the functions of the deep fascia. Since hyaluronan is essential for fascial gliding, regulation of these cells could affect the functions of fasciae so they could be implicated in myofascial pain. Because hyaluronan acts as a lubricant of the body, the presence of it is necessary for fascial gliding so that we can move painlessly. But, if we have too much of hyaluronan, it reduces gliding as well. This is called densification of the fascia. The layers are now adhered and become stuck together. 09.01.2022 IS CHILD'S POSE REALLY A RESTING POSE? Child's pose is offered in many vinyasa classes as a moment to relax, reconnect to our breath, before continuing to flow.... We are taught that the correct 'alignment' cue for childs pose is kneeling, sitting on the heels with knees together, before folding forward. We are rarely told, however, that the functional objective - if not offered as a passive moment to relax - is also to stretch the lower back. Students who love it when told to, 'take a childs pose and relax', are the students who have the bones to do so. There are many others (including myself!) who are in fact restricted in the front of their hips and simply can not fold forward, with the knees together. This is due to a bone on bone compression, with the legs in this position. Not only is the forward fold then restricted, but the stretch is not felt and there is certainly no relaxation. In fact, it can even become stressful for the student, as they are then squishing into the femural artery and nerves in the soft tissue around the front of the hips. (Not fun at all, let me tell you!) So, what is the solution? Why not simply cue... 'Take a childs pose. Knees together, or knees apart - let your body dictate the shape that allows you to feel a stretch to the lower back and relax' By letting them know the functional objective and simply offering a second cue, the students are given the green light to move away from their compression, which for many students will now allow them to fold forward, to find the stretch and to relax. There is no one-size-all approach to yoga asana. Learn to practice and teach, based on function, not aesthetics. #YinspirationTrainer #SettingGoldStandards (Artwork: @ellehell) #yin #yinyoga #functionalyoga #paulgrilley #yinyogateachertraining #functionalanatomy #bones

06.01.2022 PSOAS LINKS- Lumbar spine pathologies are amongst the most common seen in the modern world and it is no coincidence that sitting is also at an all time high. P...rolonged sitting can contribute to chronic psoas major tension, which will lead to compressed and irritated lumbar spines over time due to its anteriormedial attachments to the lumbar vertebrae/discs and posterolatetal attachments to the transverse processes. The psoas (with the iliacus creates the iliopsoas) is the muscle with the largest circumference in the body and it has many important functions and fascial connections. The psoas is encased in a vast fascial covering called the Fascia Iliaca and this fascia is continuous over the muscle itself but has attachments to the Quadratus Lumborum, the thoracic diaphragm, the pelvic floor muscles, the kidney, the colon, and the femur inferiorly. This fascia helps the psoas create a functional continuity between the lumbar spine, the pelvis, and the femur. This creates the Lumbo-Pelvi-Femoral Complex. This concept helps us remember that, through the fascia, one cannot have a hip movement without a tensional influence on the lumbar spine and vice versa. Research shows that the psoas major works as a lumbar stabilizer and it’s atrophy is linked to chronic back pain. Learn more about the many links of the psoas and it’s fascia and how they specifically affect the lumbar spine in our latest Patreon post, link in bio. #anatomylinks #anatomy #fascia #biomechanics #biotensegrity #psoas #chiropractic #osteopathy #physiotherapy #dryneedling #yoga #hip #muscle #orthopedics #fascialanatomy #learning Credit to F. 02.01.2022 ARE YOUR CLASSES INCLUSIVE OR EXCLUSIVE? Are you teaching basic poses with clear, detailed action cues, that help students get into their body and learn the fun...damental physical actions to refine their body awareness, or are you only teaching big advanced poses to draw in the crowds? I recently saw yet another hashtag series on social media promoting inclusivity in yoga, with the hashtag #YogaforAll, yet every pose pictured was advanced from a one-legged urdhva dhanurasana to an intense handstand variation. Isn’t this message contradictory? There are so many physical, mental and emotional benefits that come from practicing yoga, that are far beyond the shapes themselves. Making yoga accessible to all ages, sizes, shapes is so important, if we are to deliver the true value of yoga to our students. We spend our lives being pitted against each other. Being told that we need to be smarter, thinner, prettier. That we need to be perfect, or we are not good enough. Shouldn’t our yoga practice be a respite from that noise - a place where we are welcomed and accepted, just as we are? Shouldn’t our yoga practice be a sanctuary for us to withdraw to, where we feel safe? Shouldn’t our yoga practice heal us from our mental, emotional and physical afflictions, rather than create further harm? Something to think about. #foodforthought #YinspirationTrainer #SettingGoldStandards #yin #yinyoga #yinyogateacher #functionalyoga #inclusivityinyoga #yoga #yogaforeveryone

02.01.2022 When the protective muscles of the heart are made to relax, then the direct muscles of the heart become relaxed. If one has to invigorate the cardiovascular sy...stem in any other type of exercise, one needs to create tremendous movement in the body such as jogging or running. This way one creates tremors made by vigorous movement, where as in yogic asanas, one brings a good amount of blood circulation to the heart muscles without irritating or making the heat pump fast. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika says that all inversions are Viparita Karani. Even Sirsasana is considered Viparita Karani. But one sentence says when the buttocks are slightly down below the trunk, is Viparita Karani. The venous blood collects in the abdomen, like an artificial tank. And then from here it gradually drips towards the heart, like a waterfall . The blood is purified without strain, spreading to the entire set of lungs. And that is why Svatmarama [author of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika] says the effect is that it conquers death. This is poetic language. You have to allow it a certain margin. You cannot conquer death, but you need not suffer ill health, and your life may be prolonged. That means death is delayed. You cannot conquer death. You have to die. You have to understand the inner meaning, not the surface meaning. Conquering death means that you will be free of diseases so that your life is prolonged. Death is delayed, so you have conquered death. That is the effect of this asana. You can see that the brain is quiet. The pose induces a passive, pensive state. It is not an intellectual drug, but it will relax the brain. That is ‘natural’ dhyana. Not induced meditation, but natural meditation. When Lord Krishna showed his form to Arjuna, Arjuna said, I’m frightened. I can’t see you with ordinary eyes. Then Lord Krishna graced Arjuna with a Divine eye so that he would be able to perceive Krishna’s terrifying cosmic form in the Bhagavad Gita. The Divine eye made Arjuna less nervous. You must have read it. That is what I am building up. The Divine eye represents the nervous system. The nerves are the unconscious mind. The nerves are the hidden mind. All my practices are meant to develop the strength of the nerves so that when the light of the Self flashes, you do not become nervous.
