14.01.2022 #BlackLivesMatter #TimeForABetterWorld An excellent report on historic, systemic racism facing indigenous Australia. 432 deaths in custody, one per month since ...the 1991 Royal Commission recommendations which were not implemented. Every Australian should know this. If it was our family, we’d be screaming. Why are black lives worth less, whether in US or here in Australia? COVID-19 has exposed deep fissures in our social structures, vast inequalities, institutionalised racism and discrimination that cannot stand any longer. The planet is under threat, inequality is rising, racism and xenophobia flourishing and yet in recent months we’ve had a tantalising glimpse of a better world through breaking down entrenched barriers, equality, compassion, community, giving, sharing and making decisions in the interests of all. What we saw and experienced was only a mirage, unless we ensure these lost values underpin where we go from here. We can build a more just, equitable, fair society where humans aren’t suffocated or shot for being black, aren’t incarcerated, separated from your children and tortured for seeking refuge, aren’t homeless, left destitute and considered worthless, where everyone has basic needs and rights, where the planet is protected and nurtured. Of course #BlackLivesMatter, here and everywhere and it’s wonderful to see tens of millions around the world stand in solidarity against injustice. By standing with black communities everywhere, including Australia, we’re standing for equality for everyone who is oppressed, held down and considered somehow less. The question is, how are we going to change society and the so that everyone matters and where justice, equity and sustainability are universal? Now is the time. Video credit: @theprojecttv
