25.01.2022 #perfecthomeport #gbrcensus Get on board now to discover more areas like this with special access available in the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef SuperYacht Group Great Barrier Reef #GreatReefCensus project! . . .... This close up view shows the delicate structures of this poorly understood coral. (Photo: Schmidt Ocean Institute)This octopus was observed at nearly 1,200 meters depth, during an exploration of the Ribbon Reef Canyons, around 170 km northeast of Cairns, Australia. The ROV was exploring the mid-section of a canyon that connects directly to the shallow waters of the Great Barrier Reef, offshore from Ribbon Reef 5. The research team was using the high resolution cameras and robotic arm of the ROV to observe and collect samples of the geology and seabed organisms. 20.01.2022 Summertime is spawning time on the #GreatBarrierReef and not just for corals - giant clams get in on the act too! Great photo of Tridacna derasa releasing gamet...es at Kangaroo Reef last week, taken by our member and one of the living legends of marine science on the GBR, Dr Tony Ayling @toeayling Giant clams mature first as males at about 8 years of age, and by 11 years they have female gonads as well, and remain functional hermaphrodites for the rest of their lives, which can be 50 years plus. They also mass-spawn like the corals, and we see this late in the afternoon on neap tide days over the warmer months. Giant clams release about 2-3 million eggs when they spawn, and like other invertebrates, the tiny larvae drift around in the open sea for about 10 days, feeding on plankton and growing, before they are ready to return to the reef and settle as a tiny clam less than 1mm long. Of course most of the juveniles do not survive, but a few lucky ones make it and keep the population going. #TooPreciousToLose Coralseafoundation.net #coralseafoundation #giantclam #tridacnaderasa #clamspawning #marinescience #hermaphrodite #coralsea #biodiversity #reefalive

17.01.2022 Today marks the first ever World Manta Day! And what better way to mark this day by sharing a video of the most famous and rarest manta ray of them all, the pi...nk Inspector Clouseau filmed by Master Reef Guide Pablo. "Theres no better way for me to celebrate this day than to share the beauty of the most unique Manta Ray of the planet, the Pink Manta-Inspector Clouseau-PINKY! I was fortunate enough to film him on 3 of the 8 sightings ever recorded in history" "Only seen at Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort last year this healthy, mature male was following a female, observed courting each time. Project Manta - The manta rays of Australia have been studying the origins of his unique pink colour and suspect that it is probably due to a mutation in the pigment of his skin" "We have not seen him in 2020 yet, but hopefully the Master Reef Guides from Lady Elliot Island will get lucky soon" We hope so as well! #worldmantaday IG: www.instagram.com/pablocogollos

16.01.2022 Some pictures from yesterday at Opal Reef on Wavelength 6..... All these pictures are taken just with ambient lighting with no post-processing and show the char...acteristic colours of healthy shallow coral. Colour in such coral is mostly determined by the symbiotic algae inside the tissue, as they in turn contain photosynthetic pigments (mostly brownish). Additional colours mostly come from other chemicals that control photosynthesis or have a photo-protective role. Colour polymorphism is the name given when individuals of the same species have different colours. In coral there isn't a single gene to control production of photo-protective chemicals, but rather multiple copies and there are differences between individuals in how many of these are activated even under the same lighting. This means individuals of the same species growing just next to each other can be different colours. Such genetic variation also means some corals may be better adapted to strong light and others may grow faster. (pc John Edmondson)

Subject to the finalisation of the transaction, Varley will own Norship. Ray Fry, Owner and director Norship said; I have decided to take a step back after dedicating much of my life to the business. I have sought out an Australian buyer who really appreciates the business, understands how to operate it properly, look after the team and one that is keen and capable of developing its future potential. Varley was established in 1886 and is one of Australia's oldest and most advanced engineering and manufacturing companies. It is an Australian family owned business, like mine, with a heritage in engineering, manufacturing and marine like mine; so it’s a great fit. They want to continue to strengthen the business, its people and the brand and they are committed to this industry, this region and their customers. I therefore leave this business knowing it’s in safe hands and knowing the brand lives on. Jeff Phillips, Managing Director Varley said; Varley are very proud to continue the strong tradition of Norship. Norship, like Varley, is a family owned Australian business that takes great pride in its workmanship and customer care. Becoming part of the Varley Group ensures that that will not change whilst adding depth to our capability. I am committed to work with my experienced team and with the Varley Group to ensure the success of this acquisition.

Its a wonderful addition to our remote Far North adventures - where no glass bottom boat has ventured before! We are also using it as part of the Great Reef Census. 07.01.2022 Thank you John for your inspiring work and immense dedication to the greater good! We will always remember you. Its been a true privilege. I grew up in the United States and was enthralled by the underwater wonders that Jacques Cousteau captured in his documentaries. The dream of joining in my own version of a Calypso adventure has never died for me, and today I lead a life on the Great Barrier Reef far beyond my youthful fantasies. JOHN RUMNEY... I arrived in Far North Queensland over 30 years ago, keen to explore the majesty and wonder of the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef is probably my heart and soul. I left the States to come here to explore it and Im still totally fascinated by it. John Rumney, a true hero and champion of the Great Barrier Reef has passed away. He was the 2017 Douglas Shire Australian of the Year. For more than 35 years, John along with his wife Linda, have been actively involved in ecotourism, research and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef. He was a visionary who created, founded and directed three highly respected organisations and businesses: the Great Barrier Reef Legacy (GBR Legacy) organisation, Undersea Explorer and Eye to Eye Marine Encounters. These endeavours have supported hundreds of scientific studies, students and international documentaries, as well as raising the standards in terms of wildlife tourism and adventure diving.
