06.01.2022 Did the Australian PM ask ALL international students to go home? The answer is NO! The unprecedent global situation due to COVID 19 has brought on hardships on everyone and each country impacted by the pandemic has closed the borders, has banned foreigners from entering the country and has also airlifted their citizens from major impact zones.... Every country has progressively put plans in place to protect and support their citizens. Australia is no different. The various measures including financial support packages are therefore aimed at Australian citizens but also include permanent residents who are citizens of other countries and their immediate family who are neither citizens nor residents. This includes financial stimulus packages. The policy or a lack of it for international students pertaining to potential financial hardships is in line with the Australian student visa conditions. To gain Australian visas every student has provided authentic and sufficient source of financial support in their respective home countries at least for the first 12 months of studies in Australia. Without this they would not have got their visas granted! What the PM clearly stated is that those who cannot leverage the financial support they had presented to gain entry to Australia should return to their home contries since the economy here would not be in a position to support them. Students who are able to support themselves should just focus on their studies as these hard times will also pass. It must be noted that millions of Australians are currently facing severe financial hardships and they are indeed the prime focus of the PM. It shouod also be noted that Australian universities who are the most direct benefactors of international students have announced financial support packages of up to $3000 for international students! Please let us know if your country has announced financial aid for foreigners including international students in your country in the light of the current pandemic. During these testing times, it is therefore important that news should not be distorted to cause panic. Such distortions are as bad as fake news. Stay informed and stay safe! https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-pm-tells-int/12119568
