25.01.2022 This article was the first public awareness of the possible closure of Guf Geelong. It states that plans have been made to demolish the standing building to make space for a lane-way connecting to Dennys Place Lane. The article goes onto explain that the council has made attempts to buy the property with the owner politely declining. ... A central Geelong action plan manager was quoted as saying the following: The impact of the acquisition and the subsequent conversion of the space into a lane-way connection will directly affect the landowner and the existing tenant, the officer said. This means that if the amendment C262 is approved, the building will be acquired forcibly by the council. This will affect Guf financially as relocation is likely to cause a huge decline in business and accessibility to it's patrons.
22.01.2022 A MUST READ! Central Geelong Property Developer Bill Votsaris part owns a building (along with Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons) that would directly benefit from the demolition of Guf and even he has gone on record as saying it's a bad idea and that CoGG should open Mclarty place laneway instead. There is support for Guf and there are viable options that people are all for, so come on Geelong Council do the right thing...... http://m.geelongadvertiser.com.au//story-fnrwqsx7-12275935
20.01.2022 Everybody is getting in the spirit! Here are some buddies of Guf Geelong showing their support today at PAX #saveguf
19.01.2022 People if possible please come to Guf Geelong before 5pm today as the Geelong Advertiser is wanting to take a photo of the store with the people supporting it. This is so important as we need to physically show our fantastic community and our support for the store. We hope that everyone can represent themselves with the values that we would use while attending Guf to not tarnish the business in any way during this crucial time. ... Thanks to our admin Meg for getting the word out.
19.01.2022 Everyone we are attempting to create a hashtag for Guf so please post #saveguf to show your support for this valuable local business
19.01.2022 Get in the spirit!
19.01.2022 Our tremendous community has already come forward with a popular idea. We would like to help collect signatures in favor of Guf continuing to trade at 28 Malop St Geelong. You can do this by following the below link, or hitting the 'Sign Up' button provided at the top of this page. Both will redirect you to the current petition that is already sitting on over 1140 signatures.
18.01.2022 There are some very great quotes featured in this article!
14.01.2022 You may have all seen a recent article by The Geelong Advertiser regarding an incident today at Guf. We will ALWAYS continue to support Guf and right now we would appreciate it if you could please keep Paul in your thoughts and wish him a speedy recovery. What happened was both unprovoked and tragic and completely against the idea of community that Guf both embodies and promotes. It's important that Paul and his family take any necessary time required to heal after this inci...dent so please respect their current need for space and privacy. Do feel free to send some support by dropping a comment below and we will try our bests to keep you updated on any relevant news or updates. Much love to you all! - Admin Ashlee
12.01.2022 An interesting paragraph taken from the Request For A Planning Scheme Amendment Public Acquisition Overlay (which can be found at http://www.geelongaustralia.com.au//i/8d2d0901dd9c6bb.aspx) "While either 26 Malop St and 28 Malop St would achieve the same functional outcome in creating this laneway connection, it should be noted that 26 Malop St adds greater architectural interest to the street scape makes a more important contribution to the quality of the built environment..., due to its detailed facade and parapet (as shown in attachment 5). On this basis, the acquisition of 28 Malop st is proposed, as its plain, rectilinear facade adds less value to the overall character of the street scape." It would seem that one of the major contributing factors in demolishing a thriving Geelong business is that it doesn't have the required "character" to add to the Geelong streetscape.
12.01.2022 We would love to thank the Geelong Advertiser for their ongoing coverage and support over the past few months! Our campaigning wouldn't of reached as many people without their involvement and constant updates.
11.01.2022 And it's here! Thanks to The Geelong Advertiser for the extra coverage on this topic along with Meg and Sarah for being strong advocates for the cause.
06.01.2022 This is a current circulating picture, showing an already built lane-way providing access to the same end point as the one planned in place of Guf. We feel that this could easily be rejuvenated and still assist the council in their 7.5 million dollar plan to open up pedestrian routes in the city.
06.01.2022 Ready for #paxaus!
06.01.2022 A long awaited and eagerly accepted update on the situation from the crew at Guf. Paul and the staff could not be more grateful to everyone that has shown so much support for this great and very deserving cause. While its not quite time to celebrate things are definitely headed on the right path to the outcome we all want.
06.01.2022 Today the Mayor posted this Geelong Advertiser article on his facebook page. It was accompanied with this message from him... "I want to assure everyone that the future of Guf is not at threat. We are working to secure a new home for the popular gaming centre." https://m.facebook.com//a.24613593888432/545578592273389/
04.01.2022 At tonight's Council Meeting our own Melanie Renison asked the three questions she had submitted earlier. She asked (in much more eloquent and detailed language) why the lane-way three doors down was not simply being re-opened? Why Guf was targeted for demolition and not the empty building beside it and lastly will Council find another suitable safe haven for Geelong youth to spend their time? I wont quote the replies but will say that the general answer is that the Council ...is meeting with Guf this Thursday to try and come to an amicable agreement. This is a positive step and should be viewed as such. They also stated that if the acquisition was to go forward then they have every intent to try and relocate Guf and that they do understand that its location is integral to its ongoing success. In answer to why they aren't using the already established lane-way they said that they are taking everything into consideration but they had opened communications with the owner of the lane-way a while back with no success. Another concerned member of the public (not affiliated with our group) asked why the north end of McLarty Place wasn't being opened up instead of demolishing Guf? The answer given was that it is more cost effective to get rid of Guf than the other building. Rather confusingly the councilwoman then went on to say that the building is privately owned and that they couldn't just take privately owned property. Whether or not the questions were answered satisfactorily is a matter of opinion but it did open up further dialogue and showed the Council that there are many concerns around this forced acquisition. Well done Mel, you took to the front-line and championed our cause to The Council and to The Mayor himself. Please join me in thanking her for her time, passion and bravery.

03.01.2022 Today we were contacted by Kerrie White on behalf of Team Guf and this is what they had to say... #saveguf Today team Guf Geelong met with COGG. Deputy Mayor Cr Michelle Heagney attended and offered her support. While council assured us that they will support us to relocate, they were unable to offer a time-frame, official support in writing or any firm financial commitment other than to ask that we 'have faith' in the process. ... So today we stand by our community & let our voices be heard. We thank you & ask that you continue to show your support by opposing the public acquisition of our building before November 16! As well as maintaining the petition which our awesome community has established. THANKYOU! https://www.change.org/p/geelong-council-save-guf-geelong
