21.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of Exercise Right Week (21st - 27th May). This will be Exercise & Sports Science Australia’s (ESSA) fifth consecutive annual campaign to educate, inform and inspire all Australians of the importance of exercise and the benefits that physical activity can have on their health, especially for those living with chronic conditions. Exercise Right Week aims to educate Australians on the importance of exercise and to demonstrate the importance of seekin...g the right exercise expert for their requirements. We want to ensure they are exercising safely, as different chronic conditions come with various exercise considerations. There is not a one size fits all approach, explained Anita Hobson-Powell, ESSA Chief Executive Officer. Each day we will be sharing videos of wonderful people who have achieved great outcomes working with Exercise Physiologists around Australia. They will share their stories, and tell us how Exercise has improved their life. By sharing these exercise journeys, we hope to inspire Australians who may be living with or at risk of, a chronic condition to seek the support of an accredited exercise expert, such as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. So we want to know what’s your Motivation To Move? Is it to manage your blood sugar levels? To improve your aerobic capacity? To manage anxiety? To maintain your independence? Or to improve your strength/power? We’d love to hear from you #exerciserightweek #motivationtomove Exercise Right Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA)

20.01.2022 Physiological Mechanisms of Voluntary Breathing Techniques/Exercises Voluntary breathing techniques such as pranayama breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) increase parasympathetic (inhibit neural responses) tone, reduce sympathetic (excitatory) nervous activity, improve respiratory/CV function, reduce effects of stress and improve mental/physical health. These techniques shift the ANS away from its excitatory dominance, by functionally resetting it and activ...ating its inhibitory system. This excitatory dominance is seen in stressed or anxious patients, who have prolonged or hypersensitive excitatory arousal of the sympathetic nervous system. Through regular implementation of these techniques, as part of a holistic, MDT approach improvements can been seen in immune function, HTN, asthma, ANS imbalances, psychological and stress related disorders. Below i’ve attached a 15 minute PMR video if anyone may like to give it a try. Just find yourself a quiet room with no distractions, and either complete the activity seated or lying if you prefer. Really focus on your breathe, and noticing the difference between tensing and relaxing the muscles. Note: Remember not to tense too hard. You should not feel pain or cramping during this activity. 19.01.2022 10 Key messages about injury, pain and recovery: 1. Pain is an alarm meant to protect you. 2. Pain is poorly related to damage. 3. Pain is more about sensitivity than damage.... 4. Pain is multidimensional 5. Protection can be overamplified and persist past healing 6. Pain is normal. Pain can be weird though 7. You are strong and adaptable. Finding the right stimulus. 8. You can respond positively to stress. 9. Altered function is poorly related to pain. 10. You don't need fixing. No movements should be off limits forever. 17.01.2022 This Month Head Coach Joshua is participating in Steptember to help raise vital funds to help pay for equipment, therapy, and further research into groundbreaking treatments for Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy affects people in different ways and can affect body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. Kids like Dan have shown more courage and determination in his first few years than most of us need to in a lifetime. The steps t...aken this Steptember will help more kids like him, and that's a beautiful thing. For 28 days straight, along with his awesome team they will be aiming to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps rain, hail or shine. 13.01.2022 WALK OFF THE WAR WITHIN CHALLENGE On Saturday 22nd April 2017 at 9am, the Supreme Movement ESC Team will be joining Emergency Service Personnel, Defence Force Personnel & Members of the Public to walk around Victoria Park in Ballarat to raise awareness of Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In December 2016 Firefighter Nathan Shanahan lost his battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Sadly many of our service men and women have succumb to Depression and PTSD and... taken their own lives. The walk / challenge is to replicate the walk Firefighter Nathan Shanahan completed in April 2015 from Mildura to Adelaide. Nathan walked over 400 kilometres with a 20 kilogram pack to raise awareness of PTSD and Depression. The plan is, in memory of Firefighter Nathan Shanahan and other Fallen Brother / Sister Service Men & Women to march around Victoria Park in Ballarat for 20 kilometres with a 20 kilogram pack which symbolises the weight of depression and the equipment our service personnel often carry. The event is free to register, as it's priority is creating and increasing awareness. However they are still looking for a few event sponsors to jump on board, and encourage teams/organisations to obtain sponsorship for the challenge. Additionally hats, t-shirts and wristbands will be made available on the website shortly for order, to be collected on the day. So calling out to all members of the Supreme Movement ESC community to get involved in this event next month. Whether participating, supporting, donating or sharing the event it all goes a long way to increasing awareness of PTSD and depression. Let's end the silence, lighten the burden and help raise awareness. Go to http://walkoffww.com for further details or to register yourself, your team/organisation. 12.01.2022 It’s been amazing having the opportunity to connect with over 30 amazing presenters at the first online Insight into Parkinson's Global Summit. The event is hosted by PD Warrior Program where you can listen to the latest research findings from experts, clinicians, and academics who specialise in this field. Of particular interest was hearing of the efficacy exercise has in managing symptoms of bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor. Understanding the importance of exercise being n...euro active as opposed to neuro passive, and really challenging both the physical and cognitive to drive neuroplasticity. Key Points: 1) Importance of implementing exercise intervention as early as possible 2) Understanding Neuroplasticity Training Principles to drive change 3) Importance of long term exercise compliance/adherence (Parkinson’s does not go on holidays) 4) Despite not proven yet, there is a strong case to suggest that exercise is also neuro protective. I highly recommend the PD summit for fellow allied health, medical staff, carers and of course individuals with PD and their family/friends. https://www.insightintopd.com #insightintoPD

06.01.2022 Exercise is an effective intervention for improving both physical and mental health outcomes. However, it can be more difficult for Individuals experiencing mental health issues to initiate and maintain exercise programs due to the complexity of mental health. In populations with mental health issues, regular exercise prescribed by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist has been shown to yield many benefits including: Improved CR Fitness/reduce all cause mortality risk... Improve psychosocial functioning Mitigate weight gain induced by medications Improve chronic disease outcomes Reduce symptoms of depression/anxiety improve sleep quality/Increase self esteem There are many existing referral and funding pathways to support access to the services of AEPs, Dieticians and Psychologists. These include Medicare chronic disease management care plans, private health funds, DVA and Workcover. For further information please discuss with your local GP. Supreme Movement ESC
06.01.2022 According to a new review published in Frontiers in Physiology, the nuclei gained during training persist even when muscle cells shrink due to disuse or start to break down. These residual 'myonuclei' allow more and faster growth when muscles are retrained. This suggests we can "bank" muscle growth potential in our teens to prevent frailty in old age. It also suggests that athletes who cheat and grow their muscles with steroids may go undetected. Therefore, the phrase "use it... or lose it" might be more accurately articulated as 'use it or lose it, until you work at it again'." These findings will certainly provide many implications via education, exercise prescription, and health promotion for all stakeholders, whilst a review of current legislation in the policing of performance enhancing drugs within the sports arena. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2019//190125084106.htm
