25.01.2022 Today we're replacing some worn out suspension in a Mitsubishi! It's interesting to see the different set up between front and rear suspension. Springs (coil or leaf) are used to hold the car up and bear the load of the vehicle body. Shock absorbers absorb bumps in the road, as well as dampening the potential bounce factor that you get from springs.... Working together, both parts give you a very comfortable ride Safety advice! It is VERY important to get your suspension replaced by someone with the correct knowledge (a trade qualification), and with the correct tools. Coil-over-shock set ups (seen in the first photo) are under extremely high pressure, and can cause serious or fatal injury if that pressure releases. Play it safe, take it to someone with the right gear!

22.01.2022 Let’s talk timing belts! Timing belts keep vital engine components in time with each other - makes sense, right? As you can see in the first picture, the timing belt runs on a series of pulleys. This will look different on different engines. The crankshaft sets the pace, and the belt helps everything else move at that pace too. For example, if the timing belt wasn’t moving the camshafts at the correct speeds, the valves wouldn’t be opening and closing during the correct pis...ton phases. Not only would this completely muck up the running of an engine, the valves would most likely smash into the tops of the pistons causing your engine to die an unfortunate death. In the second picture, you can see what a timing belt looks like. It’s made of strong rubber with wide teeth to help it grip the pulleys and keep everything in sync. If this belt breaks or even jumps a tooth, the engine will be out of time causing the problems mentioned earlier. Timing belts need replacing periodically, as specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer. You need to replace them when either a certain amount of time passes or kilometres happen, whichever occurs first. You can find out this info in the owner’s manual or service booklet. You can see in the first picture, that the water pump can sometimes run on the timing belt. In these situations it is a very good idea to replace the water pump at the same time as your timing belt. The water pump has travelled a long way too, so replacing it at the same time can save you time and money in the future. This is a big, important job. Make sure it doesn’t get missed! It may even be worth replacing the timing belt a little earlier (e.g. 98,000km instead of 100,000km) just to be safe. Timing belt replacements can cost you a fair chunk of cash, but I guarantee it’ll be cheaper than needing a new or overhauled engine! #surestopautomotive #goldcoast #nerang #timingbelts #timingbeltreplacement

21.01.2022 One of these springs is not like the other! Our customer was having issues engaging his clutch to change gears, and it’s not hard to see why! The rogue spring restricted the movement of the clutch and the necessary contact between the clutch plate & pressure plate. This can also make the clutch become off-balance, restricting it’s dampening properties. We replaced the clutch and the vehicle drove as good as new!... #surestopautomotive #mechanic #goldcoast #nerang #clutchrepair

20.01.2022 Penny has smelled a rat! We knew she had found something when she refused to leave this car alone, and sure enough! We opened the bonnet to find "evidence" of rats everwhere. Managing the presence of rats can be really tricky, so far we can't see any damage to wiring in this car Well done to our rat hunter for telling us something was up!

17.01.2022 This week we’ve had some engines that needed their spark plugs replaced. Spark plugs are an important part of your petrol engine that must be replaced periodically to prevent misfires. Anatomy of a spark plug: Two electrodes are where we see the spark come to life! This is what ignites the air/fuel mixture, creating power within your engine. The insulator tip insulates (Makes sense right)! Each spark plug is specially engineered to create the perfect heat range to ignit...e the fuel/air mixture correctly. The insulator tip helps to keep the temperature just right The threads are the part of the plug that screw into the engine head The insulator is what can be seen on the outside of the vehicle when you remove the spark plug leads. It insulates the electrode that runs through the entire plug to make sure the spark doesn’t arc somewhere it shouldn’t The terminal is what the spark plug lead connects onto, and is what receives the electrical current that will become the spark. These spark plugs have very minor wear, but even minor wear can make a difference. The gap between the centre and side electrodes is engineered just right for each engine’s requirements, and when these components wear the gap changes. As the gap changes over time, engine performance can change and eventually misfires can occur. Some spark plugs have more than one side electrode, which in theory is supposed to increase performance but the jury is still out on that one. They work just the same as single electrode plugs though #surestopautomotive #mechanic #goldcoast #nerang #sparkplugs

15.01.2022 What’s a throttle body?? Read on to find out Picture this: you’re driving along, and you see a speed limit sign that says you can increase your speed to 100k/hr You put your foot down on the accelerator pedal and enjoy a bit more speed You’re going full throttle! What you’re seeing in this video is me replicating what happens when you want to accelerate. You press down on the pedal, which moves the cable and causes the butterfly to open, allowing more air to pass int...o the engine along with the fuel from the injectors. (Some cars have an electronically controlled throttle, which sends signal by wire instead of cable). More fuel + more air = more speed You generally find your throttle body positioned in between the air filter and the intake manifold. There are also throttle position and air flow sensors to communicate with the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to make sure the correct ratio of fuel and air can be maintained within your engine and your car continues to run smoothly Over time (just like many components in your engine), throttle bodies can get a bit dirty and have a build up of carbon. This can prevent your throttle body from operating smoothly so it’s a good idea to get your mechanic to do a throttle body clean every now and then. You’ll notice the difference! #surestopautomotive #mechanic #nerang #goldcoast #throttlebody

15.01.2022 Happy birthday to Penny, our PR Pup! She turns 5 years old today

09.01.2022 What’s wrong with this picture? The driver of this vehicle replaced their front brake pads and immediately after heard a very concerning noise. Can you figure out why? (Spoiler alert! Stop reading now if you’d like to try and guess!) Unfortunately the problem with these new brake pads is that one is put in backwards - the metal backing plate is against the rotor instead of the softer friction material. This is a very dangerous situation to be in, and unfortunately a very expe...nsive one too. Because it was put in backwards, the new brake pad is now worn in all the wrong ways, and the brake rotor is in need of replacement too. While we never want to discourage people from learning about their vehicle and carrying out small maintenance jobs within their capabilities, sometimes it is safer to just take it to your mechanic! Please remember that Just because you can, it doesn’t mean you should. It could save you and others from a nasty accident, or save you from paying for repairs upon repairs. #surestopautomotive #nerang #goldcoast #mechanic #brakes #diyfail

07.01.2022 Your tyres are the only thing between you and the road, so it’s really important that your tyres are in good condition. Let’s have a look at what’s going on with these two tyres... Photo 1: See how the top edge of this lug is very pointed, and the lower is very rounded? That’s called feathering and it’s caused by wheels that are out of alignment. Photo 2: At first glance, you might think that the tyres has been over-inflated, causing the tread on the centre of the tyre to wea...r faster than the outer tread. But look a bit closer and you’ll see that it’s actually the inner half of the tread that has worn faster than the outer. Once again, this is caused by improper wheel alignment. How do we fix these issues? Simply by having your tyres checked each service, and having your mechanic carry out a tyre rotation and wheel alignment a needed It’s also a good idea to check the air pressure on your tyres periodically too. This will help prevent uneven tyre wear that’s not related to the alignment of your wheels, and also help your fuel economy too #surestopautomotive #mechanic #goldcoast #nerang #wheelalignment #tyrepressure #tyrewear #helpfulhints
