25.01.2022 Something different to fires but then that’s all part of the job...well done that NSW RFS crew

25.01.2022 Today marks 40 years since five young lives were tragically lost battling a bush fire at Waterfall. It was 3rd November 1980 - just before 5am crews were aler...ted to a bush fire burning near McKell Avenue. Numerous brigades responded to the southern end of the Royal National Park, working to contain a large fire which was burning under mild conditions. The conditions on the day were cool, the temperature reached 19c, humidity was low and southerly winds prevailed. As the southerly winds increased in strength late afternoon, the fire transitioned from the forested area into heath, increasing the intensity and spread. The fire rapidly headed in a northerly direction towards the Uloola trail. It was on this trail where a fire tanker from Headquarters (Heathcote) Brigade was overrun by fire. It was at this location where five brave firefighters were lost - Steve Crunkhorn, 26, Gregory Rolfe, 24, Vernon Stedman, 21, William Cummings, 21 and David Marshall, 19. The fire was contained days later after burning 2,246 hectares of the Royal National Park. We remember these brave firefighters.

Twelve ...months to the day, weather conditions are very different, as is the level of fire activity. Remember fire conditions will return, so why not take the time now to discuss your plan with your family. See more

06.01.2022 Update A message from Josie, Emerald’s mum. Thank you very much for your lovely greetings. Emerald was so touched and grateful that even she missed her Daddy's... birthday greeting, she was greeted by thousand of people who are thinking about her on her birthday. She had a lovely birthday, she got an advance birthday present, a puppy named Alfie whom she loves a lot, she had a pre- birthday celebration with our Filipino friends, then she was surprised by her friends when she came home from school and had a very lovely cake and cupcakes made by my friends. We went to church and she had her first communion, then had dinner with our friends. She was delighted. And thanks RFS Long beach for this inspiring post. I’ve added a photo that Josie has shared Our story below Do you remember our beautiful friend Emerald? Last year she spent her birthday gift cards on the firefighter at Long Beach. Emerald made bags of treats for us, with beautiful messages written on every bag. Well it’s that time of year again!! On 24th November it’s Emerald’s 11th birthday. I would like to take just a moment to tell you a bit about this resilient young lady. Around Emeralds birthday last year the fires around Batemans Bay kicked off. After her birthday she went out and spent her birthday gift cards on munchies & bags. She sat down and wrote a special message on every bag. All different. Then her and her wonder mum Josie delivered them to our station. We were all very touched. December! The fires are now on our doorsteps!!!! Emerald’s father, John, goes out to their bush property on December 30, to defend his daughter’s childhood fairy land. The family get-away, their bush retreat. Meanwhile Emerald and Josie had to evacuate their home in town. Emerald and Josie later go home and find their home standing but no sign of John. Sadly they found John had passed away at his daughters fairyland while fighting the fire. Emerald stayed strong along side her mum for the tough year 2020 has dished up. So..... I’d like everyone to wish Emerald the biggest happy 11th birthday in the comments below. Let’s blow up this post and make this special young lady’s day the best ever. From the Long Beach Rural Fire Brigade, we WISH YOU A HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMERALD. We hope your day is as special as you are.

06.01.2022 A big congratulations to our Deb on succesfully completing her BF Assessment on Sunday. Can't wait to have you on the truck.
