22.01.2022 http://Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2020: The Love Sisters ‘Koorroyarr’// Arts Development Officer Harriet Gaffney first came across the works of the Love sisters at Courthouse Arts in Geelong, and was struck by the diversity of methods and visual languages used and their ready experimentation. As proud Gunditjmara Keerray Woorrong women, their art is a vital and visually engaging tool with which to educate viewers on the distinctive, diverse and complex nature of First Nation’s cultur...es. Guided and educated culturally by family, Kelsey and Tarryn formed ‘Koorroyarr Arts’ to incubate their own cultural awakening and to share that knowledge with others. Meaning ‘granddaughter’ in Keerray Woorrong dialect, ‘koorroyarr’ also acknowledges the significant presence and impact of their grandfather Uncle Ivan Couzens and the importance of family in the preservation of their own history. Our artwork practice is incredibly special and personal to us; it is our cultural expression. We want our artwork to be a celebration of our culture, to demonstrate and educate the community that we are still here. Always was, Always will be Aboriginal land. Tarryn and Kelsey Love We hope to see their work in real life very soon but for now we are thrilled to bring you this sneak peak over several posts during NAIDOC Week. Guditjmara by Tarryn Love, ink on coloured paper This artwork signifies my relationship not only physically but spiritually with my country, Gunditjmara. The symbolism in this work reflects the features of country such as the Hopkins river and the different landscapes. It serves as a reminder that First Nations peoples are the traditional owners of this land and every day we walk on stolen land where sovereignty has never been ceded. I am Gunditjmara. @surfcoastartstrail @surfcoast_artspace @surfcoastshire #naidocweek #naidoc #surfcoastshire #surfcoastartspace

17.01.2022 GRATITUDE Art Exhibition Virtual Show 3rd-11th of October Submission open now until the 13th of September ... Many of those who are impacted by Mental Illness utilise art as a tool for expression, well being and therapy. Individual recovery is our journey and often mediums such as Art and other creative forms help people grow and change in this process. Gratitude is a thought process encouraging happy hormones and a more positive outlook on life. Following this years pandemic many people have been further impacted by Mental Health issues, however, as Australians, we have much to be grateful for and celebrate. This event has seen artists impacted by Mental Illness express thoughts and insight into their individual recovery, wellbeing and therapy. It has also helped artists open up, change and grow through the experience of exhibiting, connecting with others of lived experience or family and friends, and having their work affirmed by the public and wider audience. The conversation has always been open, educational and comforting in this very welcoming and safe space. https://artoftheminds.org.au//gratitude-art-exhibition-la/

12.01.2022 Featured Artist -Alex Jupp. Her work will be featured in the New Perspectives show launching on Monday the 24th of August Concealed (2019) My work as an artist comes from a place of experimentation, I am constantly thinking of new ideas and ways to express themes and issues that have a personal connection to my life. I am always trying new mediums and methods depending on what the work demands. This series, titled Concealed, is an exploration into human emotions, specifi...cally focusing on the female experience. These images explore how we as women are told to emote and express ourselves due to societal pressures. Terms such as thats unladylike, and being told to smile no matter the situation are common occurrences for many of us. The photographs were created using analog photography, the series taking advantage of a double exposure technique to create haunting, thought provoking images. Alex Jupp was raised in Anglesea and is a Deakin art student who found a passion through the lens in her teen years. Inspired by the unseen hardships of life, Alexandra likes to explore mental health, and the duality within people, to create thought provoking images.

12.01.2022 Anthony Allardyce @fredstiller On the Beach This Quiet Earth (2018) Seeping through the cracks of the protected Point Roadknight landscape the familiar is usurped for this new world. Marching toward the unravelling order where our lived everyday has been pervaded by an airborne alien, turning things literally upside down. Experimental landscapes offer a glimpse into this place of diminishing clarity and future vision, where the familiar has become unmapped, organic and vira...l. Influenced by filmic representations The Outer Limits; On the Beach and This Quiet Earth, I offer a visual record in direct response to current circumstances. Untitled 1 plays with stillness and motion haunting rippling waves evoke a journey on the River Styx. 11.01.2022 We are very excited to announce that our new exhibition New Perspectives - Experimentations in Photography and Digital Media is live! To view please follow the link below: www.surfcoastartspace.com.au/newperspectives Thanks to photographer and curator Mollie Vaughan and the amazing artists, as well as the Art Space team for making this happen.... New Perspectives: Experimentations in Photography and Digital Media, explores how photography and digital media respond to an ever-changing world. It is particularly at this time during a global pandemic, that the significance of these sometimes-ostracised mediums, have become invaluable, in delivering new perspectives on our world. Mollie Vaughan curates this exhibition in response to the growing identification of photography and digital media as mediums which are labelled too commercial for an artistic practice in regional communities. The aim subsequently, is to redefine the boundaries of these mediums and challenge our perceptions of art.

08.01.2022 Kim Tobin - When Darkness Comes 2018 / Exhibiting as a part of the @surfcoast_artspace Online show New Perspectives On a summers night the illuminated Giant Sky Wheel looms brightly against the darkness of Eastern Beach Geelong. The dream like apparition enhanced by the night-time atmosphere seems exciting and dazzling. I am interested in experimental digital photos of the Giant Sky Wheel, transformed when darkness comes. I use ambient light to experiment with slow shut...ter speed using a tripod and progress to handheld movement to distort colour and create unsettling disturbing images. I am attracted to the notion of when does the familiar become unfamiliar, strange or alien? The wheel flashes different colours at night and the silhouetted palm trees rustle in the wind. The images glow like neon signs, retro and abstract. With controlled camera shake I am able to suggest warp speed in outer space, an homage to retro space adventure T.V. shows. When darkness comes and the lights sparkle, the ordinary becomes magical and a little strange. Kim Tobin is a Melbourne-based artist who travels the world photographing landscapes and architecture. She is interested in social observations of people and their possessions. Kim has a particular interest in mid-century homes and nostalgic artefacts. She portrays the ordinary as extraordinary. 05.01.2022 Featuring @the.passerby.photo @the.passerby.birds @my.little.amigos www.thepasserby.photography FOUND LIGHT (2019) Black and White photographs featured in our current online exhibition New Perspectives @surfcoast_artspace Ive always been a wanderer, someone who has sought out places away from the crowds. Since I was a boy, I have walked the clifftops, bush paths, streets and shores of the Surf Coast, drawn to the solitude, fascinated by the landscape and light here. A few... years ago, I started bringing a camera along on these wanderings. The images here are some of the moments Ive collected since I started taking pictures. Before I carried a camera, moments like these were fleeting, hard to hold on to, like sand in your hand. But photography has changed that. It has become a basket for my beachcombing. 05.01.2022 Local Anglesea artist Rob Kain will be exhibiting his experimental works as a part of the New Perspectives show launching online August 24th. Rob explains the process behind creating his work. I have always been fascinated by the shapes of nature found in clouds and cliffs and when a friend started to take photographs of small sections of my work and digitally enhance them, it led to a whole new field of exploration. I discovered that even at a microscopic level the shapes... and details of nature are the same. In this series, I explore how modern technology can enhance the tiny details within my diluted acrylic solutions on canvas. In the last 18 months I have been experimenting with dozens of different methods of application. Some of the most detailed work stem from sections of work that are as small as 1cm square, that can be digitally enlarged to over a metre without losing any detail. We look forward to sharing more of his work with you next week.
