13.05.2022 One of the things I enjoy about doing the One on One Surfboard Shapers Workshops is the diversity in the people and the boards they shape. Not only shaping but the glassing has lots of different ideas to make a board more personal. Learning the correct procedure for getting the right result is as simple as a road map to a new destination. One such simple technique is running the leads over your arm while planning, (see photo) this will avoid cutting the cord or worse chopping into your leg. (ouch).

11.05.2022 BREAKING NEWS Over the years of doing the Surfboard Shapers Workshop many people have asked if I did timber workshops. Finally I can answer YES. Starting January, a one day Balsa Surfboard Shaping Workshop will be operating. Using quality, partially shaped hollow balsa blanks that take the long hard work out. 6 designs available: 5'10" Shortboard, 6'0" Fish, 6'6" Single Fin, 8'7" Gun, 8'6" Modern Mal, 9'6" Longboard. Just like all the other workshops, booking is essential. Email for more details. Details on the website soon, where you can sign up for the newsletter and be first with the full details. Gift Certificates also available.

22.01.2022 Gillian has finished her 9'6" longboard and is keen to shape another 9 footer. Following the 5 session plan is just like a road map to get you to the destination your after. Learning about templates, plan shaping, rough shaping with the planer, fine tuning and finishing ready for glassing. Another budding shaper finding their "Happy Place".

21.01.2022 Gillian wanted to shape her own 9'6" longboard in the Surfboard Shapers Workshop. Finished the planshaping and next is the planer. Doing it old school and doing a great job too.

19.01.2022 Zane cleaning up the deck nose rocker with a Surform (surface former) after using the planer, then smoothing the rail lines. Lots of important techniques to learn in the One on One Surfboard Shapers Workshop. Also a custom rail sanding block to help the consistency with the rail profile. "The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just a little extra".

17.01.2022 For those who have done the Surfboard Shapers Workshop and have made a set of shaping stands from the plans supplied, here are some additions that you can make that fit the stands. A strong flat work top and a set of removable glassing stands. The cross pieces on the work top fit close to the stands to secure it, while the supports for the glassing stand needs to fit close but can be firmed up with a fine wedge down the side of the post into the cross support.

16.01.2022 Rail banding should fit your hand. Release on the bottom (thumb) planshape and softness of the rail (web between the thumb and pointer finger) buoyancy with the fingers. Hand feel when shaping is the feel when surfing. Notice how the finger joints correspond to the rail banding. Why we use inches when shaping. 15.01.2022 For all those interested in the Surfboard Shapers Workshop Refresher Course, I will be shaping a longboard on Sat 31st March. 2 spots left for this one. Then on the 30th June a shorty then back to a long one again on Sat 28th July.

14.01.2022 Richard N did the workshop and shaped himself a 5 fin Bonzer. Came out real nice.

08.01.2022 A little project I've been working on for a while. Signage finally done ready for a small time shaper.

07.01.2022 Matt picked up his channel bottom performance fish that he did in the Workshop. Nice little board. He also designed his own logos and had them glassed in. You can too.

04.01.2022 Callum got an Alaia Shapers Workshop Gift Certificate recently and created his own. You can too. Paulownia and oiled with lanolin. Wanted a logo burned in, easy, all done in a day.

03.01.2022 The steps with the electric planer are cleaning up the planshape, taking the skin off the top and bottom, nose and tail rocker, single into double concave, thicknessing, banding the rails at 45, 22 then 11 degrees then a quick deck clean up. Its 20 minutes of planing condensed into 40 seconds.

01.01.2022 Over the many years of doing the Workshops, I have taught about all the aspects of shaping. The shaping bay, blanks, templates, using the planer, fine tuning, finishing and all the tools used. Of all these tools used in shaping, two are more important than any others. The hands and the eyes. Learning to feel and see the smallest of curves becomes the skill of good shapers. Many have incorporated these symbols into their logos. Its something that cant be learned from watching online videos. The smallest things become magnified under pressure. As an example, water flowing over a 1mm piece of string then the effect as water speed increases.
