24.01.2022 MID WEEL JOURNAL Throughout the Christmas season we look forward to and then celebrate in the remembrance of the birth of God into our world through Jesus. We marvel at the wonder of God's great love for us, which saw God enter into the human world, as one of us, to live a human life, and point out plainly for us, the way to God. Through the birth of the Christ-Child we are blessed. Extremely blessed.... However...it is important that we do not move on from Christmas leaving the baby in the manger. God did not incarnate to provide us with a heart-warming story to hold onto...God incarnated so that our lives might be transformed through the knowledge and understanding of God - as revealed in Christ. Therefore it is imperative that we take Jesus out of the manger, and journey with him through the coming year, allowing him to grow up within us - becoming the revolutionary rabbi who changed the course of history. For reflection: * Do I leave Jesus in the manger each Christmas, or do I take Jesus with me through my year? * How do I take Jesus with me? What does this mean for me? * How might I more purposefully take Jesus with me and allow him to grow within my life. Many blessings as you engage these simple yet very helpful questions. Blessings Rev Jenny :-)

18.01.2022 A HUGE thanks to Cynthia Hoogstraten who created this community labyrinth for the children to enjoy. Cynthia drew people around the edges of the labyrinth - representing Community (our theme for STOKED this time), and the children decorated their people before enjoying the labyrinth. Dennis, Shelley, and Rev Jenny even had people created in their honour - see the relevant photo's. STOKED kids are the best! :-)

17.01.2022 Mid Week Journal Last Sunday we examined GIVING. Giving can be an uncomfortable topic for us at times. Human beings tend to be creatures who worry tHat there will not be enough for themselves if they give - they fear they will run out of time, talent, and treasure. This impinges greatly on their willingness to give, to release, and to let go. ... On the flip side is the reality that true community is achievable as we each give and receive regularly...as we share our time, talent and treasure with others. How might we bridge the gap between being a giving person and our natural tendency to horde or fear giving? The Bible teaches us that TRUST and FAITH are vital to our entire spiritual journey. This is also true of the aspect of our journey which focuses upon GIVING. Giving requires faith and trust that God will support and bless us as we step out and give to others. Giving requires faith and trust in God to release the death grip we have over our finances and possessions. Mentally, we know this and want to engage this. Practically, we often caulk at doing it. (Please remember - we are not focusing on mere money when we talk about giving. We equally include our time and talents) To help us we could reflect upon the following questions: * What is it about giving of time talent or treasure that scares or bothers me? *. Why does it scare or bother me? What am I afraid of? *. Which Bible verses speak to me the most about giving? *. How do I feel faith and trust are linked with giving? * in what ways might I give of my TIME to God? * How might I give my TALENTS? *. Where might I give out of my TREASURE? Giving and receiving each pose their own challenges for us. May we reflect on our responses to these challenges. Blessings Rev Jenny

10.01.2022 Mid Week Journal Matthew 25:1-13 The Kingdom of Heaven On Sunday we looked at the unusual parable of the Ten Virgins, which presents a wedding scene far removed from our own. This parable, and the preceding and following verses, all contain strong messages of 'end times', as well as containing teaching regarding "the Kingdom of heaven".... On Sunday, and again today, we focus on the "kingdom of heaven" focus. To begin, spend a moment thinking about the various images you have held for "the kingdom of heaven". What does, or what has, the kingdom of heaven looked like for you over the years? Traditionally, we have understood 'the kingdom of heaven' to refer ONLY to that wonderful place of peace and love which we will go to when we die. However, Jesus clearly teaches another image of the kingdom of heaven. Jesus' 'other' version does not replace the notion of a place that we go to after we die, yet it certainly expands our understanding of the kingdom of heaven. So, what is the 'other image' that Jesus taught? In Luke chapter 17:20-21 Jesus said" "The kingdom of God does not come to you with careful observation, nor will people say "here it is is" or "there it is" because the kingdom of heaven is within you." The Kingdom of heaven is WITHIN YOU. This image that Jesus taught transforms our understanding of heaven - no longer is heaven ONLY a place we go to when we die...it is also our STATE OF BEING right here and now. Spend a few moments considering the above statement, before moving into the following questions: * What does the above image look like to you? * Does it add to or detract from your previous understanding of heaven being only the place we go to when we die? * How does this image impact your life in the present? In what ways? Why? * What might this image reveal to you about your relationship with God? Does it add a new dimension? Jesus teaches us that the kingdom of heaven is an endless and boundless kingdom. It is within us, around us, and is that place we will transcend to after we die. Spend some time reflecting on the wonder and the blessing that is within your own experience and within the experience of all of creation. Many Blessings, Rev Jenny :-)

08.01.2022 Mid week JOURNAL Please read Luke 9:43-48 Mark 9:30-37 This week we are exploring another foundation for discipleship - SERVANTHOOD. Servanthood isn't a word that we are fully comfortable. Western culture aligns servanthood with being 'lower than others' or with resigning oneself to engage menial tasks at the whim of the more elite.... Yet, in opposition to these stereotypes, we witness Jesus living out a life of humble servanthood, AND we hear him calling each one of us to do the same. Let's explore what servanthood might imply. Spend a moment considering what comes to your mind when you think about servanthood. Look up or google some contemporary meanings of the word - how do these sit with you? Now spend a few moments thinking about the ways you can recall Jesus served humanity - what stories or images come to mind? Jesus provides us with many clear examples of servanthood: 1) Through the way he reached out to the poor, outcast, unclean, rejected. 2)Through the way that Jesus patiently received everyone who came to him - even when he was tired, hungry, worn out. 3) Through the way Jesus washed the disciples feet. 4) through his teachings about not seeking to be first. Jesus' message was very inclusive and very community based. Rather than being viewed as a punishment, how would our lives and the lives of others change if we could view servanthood as a foundation for the growth of good community? What are the links between community and servanthood? Pause for a moment and imagine what a community based upon service for the greater good would look like. Now read again the two scriptures for today. Think again about what servanthood; service; having a serving heart mean for you. How might you embody these in your daily life? Blessings, Rev Jenny :-)

07.01.2022 Mid Week Journal Jeremiah 6:16 says: "This is what the Lord says; Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls". Jeremiah 6:16 reveals a simple yet profound direction regarding how to live the type of life that God desires for us - the type of life which will lead to a life of purpose and peace.... Let's dissect this powerful verse to explore its deep meaning: Stand At The Crossroads: All of us stand at crossroads at various times in our lives. It is comforting for us to recognise that our plight of facing difficult decisions and choices in life, is the general plight of all people. Why might this be comforting? Why is it helpful for us to know this? How does this make you feel - knowing that you stand together with all humanity in facing this plight? What do you understand as being God's role in our crossroads? Ask For The Ancient Paths: The Bible reveals for us the pathways that our forbears took in their faith journey. From their testimony we learn about trust, resilience, faith, and hope. We can also follow the breadcrumbs they leave for us - as we discover and embody the good news of God within our own lives, and seek to live it out within our daily lives. As we stand at our crossroads we are encouraged to ASK for the ancient paths. To whom do we ask? Why might the ancient paths help us at our crossroad moments? What thoughts or feelings arise for you when you reflect upon the ancient pathways and the faith journeys of our faith-forbears when you face your crossroads? Do their experiences and their faith responses help you? How might following the ancient paths assist you faith journey? Walk on the Ancient Paths: This part of the verse is simple...when we stand at the crossroads and we seek the ancient paths, we must then CHOOSE to walk upon those pathways. Having mere head knowledge will not help us in our daily walk. How, practically, might you walk upon the ancient pathways? What do you need to engage or implement? Is this something you are willing to commit to? God's wisdom is always available to us, but we must step out and follow God's wisdom for it to take effect within our lives. Spend a final few minutes reflecting upon the blessed life that is promised to you as you follow the ancient paths. Blessings, Rev Jenny Find Rest For Your Souls
