12.05.2022 We are up and running for 2022 and have a couple of spaces for Years 7-12 ! Get in quick!

22.04.2022 We’re all full for face to face evening sessions at the moment. There is space for online sessions during lockdowns if your precious ones are needing some help during these times (our online tutoring works surprisingly well). Sending you caring mathsy vibes through this challenging time!

10.04.2022 There’s a debate in maths learning which has popped into the media again recently as some changes to the curriculum have been proposed. It is about this conflict between ‘skill and drill’ vs ‘play and discover’. This is not just about maths learning but about all learning. This podcast has really hit the nail on the head for me. They tak about the explode/exploit trade off. Children are natural explorers, and actually better explorers than adults. Our education systems need a balance of explore and exploit learning. I think things are too heavily weighted towards the exploit variety,,, there I said it! https://podcasts.apple.com//why-adults-lose-/id1548604447

23.03.2022 No school? No problem! We’ve been seamlessly bouncing back and forth between face-to-face and online sessions ever since Lockdown 1.0. We use a combination of Zoom, iPad and Osmo so we can view each other’s written work with ease. Yep, students continue working in their normal exercise book so nothing changes between the online and in-person deal. I’m a VIT registered teacher with a Working With Children’s Check and 10 years teaching experience Years 7-12.... I’d love to hear from you :)

05.03.2022 We’re cruising through term 2 my students and I There’s space for another 1 or 2 students at the moment so if you know someone who could use a confidence boost in their maths life please give me a shout

19.01.2022 I love this episode of Hidden Brain. It really influenced how I give feedback in my teaching and tutoring. When working with a tutor, students get immediate feedback in the moment as to how they are going. When we give feedback we inevitably communicate some extra judgement through our tone of voice or language. Trying to remove the judgement from my feedback and strip it back to a simple "yes, keep going" or "no, try again" helps to keep the focus on skill building and remo...ves the "i'm bad at maths" thing from it. In this example in Hidden Brain they use dog clickers to train surgeons. A click for "yes keep going", no click for "not yet". PSA I don't use dog clickers in my tutoring! But they have found it to be an effective method at removing the judgement from feedback. Add in a bit of Barbara Frederickson (Author of Positivity) by trying to keep the ratio of positive to negative feedback at 3 to 1 to keep us motivated and we have a pretty good recipe for effective learning. I hope you enjoy the podcast!

17.01.2022 A completely unscientific study shows that listening to The Fractions Song (written and performed by me) whilst falling asleep makes you better at Maths What is proven to help is having a teacher who understands where a student is at and is able to ask just the right question at just the right time to get that next bit of understanding to ‘click’ (that’s where we come in). Enjoy the song!... * Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com//artic/pii/S1877042815024295

10.01.2022 Hi! We reckon we've worked out a pretty good way to run maths tutoring online - keeping it as close to face-to-face tutoring as possible. We're ready to help you or your child through this distance learning thing! Based on the Surf Coast, I've been a teacher for almost 10 years and have taught maths in the Victorian Curriculum to Years 7-12. I'm all about walking alongside our teenagers as they find their way through the maths curriculum. I look forward to chatting with you
