14.01.2022 On Dec. 31, 2019 an unprecedented bushfire tore through the remote township of Mallacoota, Victoria, as part of arguably the most widespread disaster in Austral...ia’s history. On that day, instead of the customary surf sessions and lakeside BBQs, 4000 residents and visitors, children and elderly, cowered on the beach under wool blankets and in the water as flames ravaged the town for 14 hours. 70+ houses and countless sheds were razed to the ground, destroying the worldly possessions of many. As the long and slow road to recovery begins, our thoughts turn to our friends and fellow surfers left with nothing but the terrifying memories of the trauma they have endured. As surfers, we do not need to explain how returning bushfire victims to the water will be instrumental in the healing process. It will restore a semblance of normalcy, create a calming distraction from the tragedy (especially for the children), and strengthen the mental health support within a tightly knit surfing community. To help get the Mallacoota Surfing Community back on their feet, @torquayboardridersclub and Surfing Victoria are raffling off an official signed @kellyslater Rash Vest from the 2019 Rip Curl Pro. All proceeds of the raffle will be donated to the @mallacootaboardriders to be distributed to members who have been directly impacted by the fires. Tickets can be purchased online via https://www.surfingaustralia.com//MallacootaBoardridersClu The raffle will be drawn at the Torquay Boardriders Club annual Single Fin event on January 26th at Jan Juc. Winners will be notified via email the following week. We are also calling for donations of boards to distribute to those who lost all of their surfing equipment in the fires.
