24.01.2022 Mechanical flex in surfboards: towards an engineering approach Read our paper co-authored by Luca Oggiano and Marc InhetPanhuis Paper was presented at the 13th International Conference on Engineering of Sport between 20 and 26 June 2020

20.01.2022 Find out more about #TheAdditiveMovement and our work using Markforged 3D printers to rapidly prototype and customize surfboard fins that were ready for testing both in laboratory conditions and by surfers in the ocean.

16.01.2022 How did I get to present some of my science to Bone and the Edge from U2? . . . .... Have a listen to my story on the Lab Notes podcast brought to you by Eon Labs and presented by Leo Stevens . . LINK IN BIO . . Thank you for the opportunity Leo! . . . #science #stem #chemistry #physics #sciencecommunication #lab . . @uow @uowresearch @surfengineers @eon_labs @drleostevens See more

16.01.2022 Is there such a thing as too many diffusers on your surfboard? . . . .... . My @jsindustries1 board is fitted with 4 small diffusers on the tail (@minksystems ) and 4 large diffusers (quad set consusting of a combination of our 3D printed fins and @dhdsurf @fcs_surf fins). . . . . . . . . . 15.01.2022 What can we learn from whales? . . . Read our (open access) paper about performance analysis of whale-inspired fins for surfboards.... . . LINK IN BIO . . A big shout-out to lead-author @dshormann - it has been a pleasure to work with you! And we are not done yet, mate! . . More papers to come through our @surfengineers with @l_oggiano and @akubrd . . . Video shows @islandstylesurfschool testing the whale-inspired fins in our ocean laboratory (otherwise known as Rocky Point, Hawaii). . . CAD and design: by @josiahswanson . . The data handling was done through a platform developed in conjunction with Johan Barthelemy, Mehrdad Amirghasemi and Pascal Perez from the SMART Infrastructure Facility, University of Wollongong (details of this to follow in seperate paper). @meihrdad . . . My involvement was funded through University of Wollongong Global Challenges Program @uowresearch @uowgc . . #science #chemistry #engineering #research #surfing #performance See more

07.01.2022 Our standard set-up for testing the damping behaviour of surfboards . . We think of the damping in surfboards as springs (or shock absorbers). .... . A surfboard will absorb (dampen) vibrations while you are surfing. . . But if you think the other way around, then you can use the "spring" in your board to harvest energy and use this energy to enhance your performance. And needless to say some are very good at that! . . . We are using sensors and number crunching to quantify the "spring" (damping behaviour) of surfboards. . . . . . . 07.01.2022 It was great to be part of the Surf Engineering Associationss 1st Annual Surf Science Symposium, held Dec. 9, 2019 on Oahus North Shore. We had all aspects of surfing in attendance, from industry leaders to beginner surfers to people who love to learn new things! Check out the presentations and panel discussion on YouTube with Marc InhetPanhuis David Shormann Luca Oggiano... https://www.youtube.com/playlist

03.01.2022 How do you assess energy (or power) in the swell? . . . I am fascinated by the directional spectra from Manly Hydraulics Laboratory... . . . . . This image is from last weeks East Coast Low. It is showing waves with a lot energy coming from the SSE (red part centred around 150 degrees), while there is also waves coming from the NNE (fainter red part centred around 30 degrees) . . . . . Needless to say: you cant beat driving to the beach and having a look . . University of Wollongong Fin and Surfboard Research . . .
