20.01.2022 This weeks fatal shark attack on the Gold Coast has left our surfing community feeling very raw, and undoubtedly with a lot of questions. The attack occurred at Greenmount Beach, part of the infamous Superbank, which is an extremely popular surfing location all year round. 1 shark net and 8 drum lines are installed off this beach. 2 sharks have been killed as a result of the attack. Queensland’s current shark mitigation program has created a false sense of security and sadly... the media has reinforced it’s importance over many years. Failure to disclose the number of bites that have occurred off beaches where shark nets and drum lines have been installed, simply because they weren’t fatal, are a contributing factor. Fear based reporting on attacks where there are no shark control programs feature heavily through the media. Coverage and education in regards to what shark nets and drum lines actually are/do is extremely limited. The ocean will never be a risk free environment. Nothing will ever make beaches safe from sharks. However risks can be reduced. Self education plus adequate first aid is something we can take on ourselves. Lookout towers, drone surveillance, shark tagging, and other non lethal programs need to be invested in and supported if we want to move forward on this issue. The current control programs are outdated and ineffective.
