22.01.2022 WSL CONFIRMS MEREWETHER AS FOURTH CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR EVENT "I couldn’t be prouder to see it get underway in my home town," said Ryan Callinan. The World Surf League has pivoted, successfully, from a disastrous campaign to host an event at Lennox Head, to Merewether, a couple of hours north of Sydney.... Merewether, famous for its multi-generational talent, including four-time world champ Mark Richards, Matt Hoy, Ryan Callinan, and Craig Anderson, was an irresistible choice for the WSL, given the NSW state government had been strung up on a rack of frustration after Lennox locals turned on the event and was desperate to get a contest, anywhere. A chartered bird is gonna bring the tour’s surfers, men and women, into Sydney, mid-March, for two weeks quarantine before the tour leg starts. Event dates are April 1 to May 31, although this encompasses the other three tentative CT events, Bells, Margaret River and the Gold Coast. Victoria, WA and Queensland have been real trigger-happy on border closures and deeply hostile to opening their doors even to Australians travelling interstate. The seven Ocean and Earth Regional Title events will run between April and May and will determine the top seeds for the 2021 Woolworths NSW Junior Titles and 2021 Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles. Ocean and Earth and Surfing NSW have had a healthy relationship that has spanned decades and we share the same vision in being able to create and support a healthy junior pathway for young surfers. We are super excited to be back supporting the 2021 Junior Regional Title events in the state after a year off in 2020, said Macdonald. 15.01.2022 The 2020 Michilis Mattara Surf classic champions @jordylawler ми @mollysurfer10 ми @jett_seco ия The longest running surf competition in the world took place in Newcastle over the weekend with the 59th annual running of the Michilis Mattara Surf classic. This event is a classic piece of Australiana with some of the sports biggest names featuring on the Honor Roll including the legendary Michael Peterson, Tom Carroll, Mark Richards & Nat Young. ... The event enjoyed two perfect days of fun size waves and blue skies as Newcastle turned it on for both competitors and spectators alike. In the junior men’s division Jett Secombe created history by winning and recreating his fathers effort when when Wayne Secombe won the event in 2001. In the women’s division Molly Picklum from North Shelly was too strong defeating a quality field including three time winner Phillipa Anderson (3rd). And in the men’s division Northern beaches surfer Jordy Lawler outclassed a stacked line up to take top honours. The event was proudly sponsored by construction company Michilis who amongst many things were responsible for creating the Bathers Way civil works for Newcastle City Council. Next year the 60th anniversary of the Mattara Surf classic will be a massive celebration of surfing culture in Newcastle, so circle it on your calendar and be a part of history in the making!
