24.01.2022 This Tuesday, 6.30 am (2nd February) working bee at the Big Dune. We are working on putting in a couple of boundary markers. Many hands make light work. We are also continuing to monitor the destruction of the turtle nesting areas on the Iwasaki sand dunes. Hopefully there will be a wave as well.

24.01.2022 Hatchling turtles with guts full of plastics are washing up dead on Capricorn Coast beaches! Very very disturbing!!! We've already assed tipping point. We - you and I - all use far too much single use/convenience/unnecessary plastics in our daily consumerism lives. It has to change! And that means leading by example. And saying no to needless or extra packaging. And changing habits. And calling companies out. And not buying plastic crap at Xmas or Easter, for birthdays, or ba...Continue reading

23.01.2022 This concerns all of us beach users

23.01.2022 Next Surfrider Meeting We were planning a meeting At the Big Dune on 30th Jan but the tides are not friendly, so we thought we'd move to Yogalicious Cafe where there's outside space with a 9:30am start, this gives time if there happened to be an early surf. There will be a number of items to discuss with mostly good news, we can keep the meeting to about 1hr . Hope you can make it. Sand dunes are worth saving.

22.01.2022 Surfrider Foundation has been involved in this event for quite some time. Bring your board.

20.01.2022 Farnborough General Store for a limited time is selling the classic Surfrider Foundation Capricorn Coast Wax. Another good reason to drop in.

17.01.2022 Another great initiative we have been involved in. It's one to stop things entering the ocean, it's another to analyse it to identify sources of pollution and try to work out solutions to prevent or reduce it. Next time you walk anywhere in town have a look at the number of ciggie buts on the ground. It might surprise and shock you. Any ideas on reducing it please let us know! Did you know buts are plastic? We realise we're dealing with complex human behaviours here. But li...ttering does the aesthetics of the town and tourism no good, nor the environment we love and surf and fish in. So we need solutions. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3641270389219721&id=135975469749248&sfnsn=mo

17.01.2022 No excuses - Easily be aware of where you are in terms of fishing zones

15.01.2022 Last Saturday over a dozen volunteers joined Surfrider Foundation Australia to collect 1,449 pandanus seeds from Bangalee and planted them at Big Dune Surfing R...eserve. This work aims to restore a healthy pandanus population along the Capricorn Coast. Currently, the species is at risk from the contagious and devastating pandanus dieback. Pandanus trees provide homes for numerous species of bird, mammal, reptile and beneficial insect, and keep the dunes cool for marine turtles and their nests. FBA supported this initiative through funding from @NationalLandcareProgram. The project has also enabled renowned pandanus expert, Joel Fostin, to survey Capricorn Coast pandanus populations and introduce a biocontrol method to stop the spread of dieback. The biocontrol method is a native wasp that preys on the dieback-causing bug(Jamella australiae). The project also gained financial support from Livingstone Shire Council

11.01.2022 This week Surfrider Foundation Australia’s Susie Crick spoke to the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee at the Senate Hearing into the Product ...Stewardship Amendment Bill that Senator Peter Whish-Wilson presented time Parliament last year. Words from Susie’s page below: Yesterday I was invited to speak at the Senate hearing of the Environment and Communications Legislation Committee (Product Stewardship Amendment (Packaging and Plastics) Bill 2019). The aim of the proposed legislation is to 'force industry to act' to reduce non-recyclable, non-compostable single-use plastics. Thank you Senator Peter Whish-Wilson for presenting this important Bill. Our government (indeed ALL global governments) must acknowledge that plastic packaging is an environmental and human health threat, and force industry to be responsible for the waste they create. Plastic pollution is poisoning our landfills, oceans ....... and us. The problem is too big for individuals to change. The onus shouldn’t be on individual behaviours but rather on governmental policy to force the polluting corporations who are perpetuating the problem to change their practice and packaging; the offending producers must seek alternate materials that are compatible with nature or containers that are reusable. Our government must alter policies regarding plastic packaging as they have a ‘duty of care’ for future generations and must shift their thinking from fiscal prosperity to regenerating our future nation. #oceanfriendlyaus #surfrideroceanfriendly #oceanfriendlyrestaurants #oceanfriendly, #oceanfriendlyhi #strawssuck #surfrideraus #protectwhatyoulove #protectandenjoy #takeaction #plasticfree #Surfrider #SurfriderFoundation #RiseAbovePlastics #forthefuture #healthyocean #healthycoasts #healthyplanet #climatechange #risingtides #makeadifference #cleanwater #coastalpreservation #oceanprotection #fairfoodforagerapp
