23.01.2022 How, when the world's oceans have never been under more pressure, has the NSW Government decided to wind back marine protections? The Government is using this a...mnesty on illegal fishing in sanctuaries to avoid scientific input into the review of the Batemans Marine park and to preempt the community consultation. It’s a terrible process which undermines the environmental values of the marine park, adds confusion to the enforcement of fishing rules and undermines community confidence in the consultation currently underway as part of the review of entire Batemans Marine Park. Andrew Constance and Matt Kean MP like to spruik their climate change credentials, but the decision to open up these sanctuaries to fishing ignores climate science around the benefit of marine sanctuaries. Fully protected marine sanctuaries are one of the best tools we have for building the resilience of the marine environment to respond and adapt to the shocks from climate change including extreme weather and warming oceans. This is yet another example of how politics has been allowed to trump science under the Coalition and how narrow vested interests are driving environmental policy under this Government. Matt Kean should reject this de-facto rezoning and demand any changes go through the proper community consultation process and is guided by science. With Summer tourists on the way, these vital marine sanctuaries are likely to face even more pressure. These protections should be restored now to allow an evidence-based review to continue.

The health of Manly Harbour is looking a whole lot brighter with the installation of a seabin today as part of the Seabin Project's awesome initiative to launch a 12 month City Pilot in Sydney for cleaner oceans one marina at a time! For the uninitiated a Seabin is a like an automated floating trash can that collects marine debris floating in the sea.... To-date 23 seabins have been installed in strategic locations across Sydney, helping keep our waters clean; serving as a platform for educational activities; and providing baseline data for measurable impact on the health of the waterways. Their Mission - To live in a world without the need for Seabins. Over the 12 mth period these bins are anticipated to capture: 28 tonnes of marine debris 4.3 billion litres of water filtered for microplastics, plastic fibres, oil, fuel and more.
