22.01.2022 Surfside community... follow us for garden updates, tips etc on the Fresh Food Fair Instagram account, @surfsidefreshfoodfair . .. Raising from seed... you don’t need fancy or specialised pots! Repurpose a plastic food container by punching a few extra holes in the base for drainage, add your seed raising mix, and sow those seeds! Here we have red Russian kale seedlings. Swipe to see the inbuilt mini greenhouse that comes with it. Pretty cool huh!

Thanks goes to Linda Giggins for polishing the Surfside submission into a gem, that sparkled for the judges, who awarded the Surfside Kitchen Garden a Regional Award and Best Edible Garden Award for our region. Thanks also go to all the previous Kitchen Garden teachers that have contributed to the creation... of the garden because it would not be what it is now, if not for their hard work. Some of the award money has gone towards the purchase of plants and mulch. GARDEN HELP NEEDED On Tuesday December 10th from 9am - 12:30pm there will be a working bee in the garden. 05.01.2022 As some of you may know, through the Geelong Advertiser and other newspaper articles, Surfside recently attended the Victorian Garden Awards and brought home some special awards. Surfside’s Kitchen Garden captains, Mitchell, Ryan, Lana, and Hannah, banded together with our wonderful Kitchen Garden representative: Ms Deb Taylor and our Principal, Mr Walsh and started their long journey to Melbourne, (on the 21st), where they were to attend an award ceremony. Even though the we...ather hadn’t been as pleasant as they would have liked, due to it being disturbingly hot with the day maxing at 41 they still managed to keep smiles on their faces. Their trip was separated into four modes of transport; car, train, tram and walking. Their destination was The Royal Melbourne Botanical Gardens. Once they had arrived they had a quick snack before attending the actual presentation where they sat for a few minutes while the hosts talked about how the Victorian Garden Awards started and other subjects based around the garden. Soon they were presenting the awards to the schools. Surfside managed to snag hold of a Regional Award which came with $350 vouchers. Although that seems pretty amazing the most remarkable event of the day was Surfside winning the Best Edible Garden Award (in all of Victoria), which also came with a great deal of money making the total money awarded that day, $1350! This fantastic sum of money will be used to advance and help create a better garden for Surfside Primary School. By Hannah Wilson and Lana Pagram, See more
