25.01.2022 SURF SAFARI LONG COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT After watching the weather maps all week The Mercury Newspaper 7hofm Surf Safari Long Course Ski and Surf Boat events wi...ll race downwind from the Tinderbox beach/boat ramp to Sandy Bay starting at 10.00 am. Paddlers/Rowers can mark off at the pre-race check in desk at Southern HQ, Sandy Bay from 7.30am until 8.30am or prior to 9.30am at Tinderbox. Paddlers please come to the check in table with your PFD and leash attached, collect your hi vis cap (thanks to Stubbs Design and Construction), race pack which includes your race number and other goodies including a spot prize if you are lucky (thanks Surf Ski Tas and Fenn skis). While not essential, carrying a mobile phone is a good safety option if you need to exit at any point. Only one member of the surf boat crew needs to register to collect your race number and bag of goodies. Boats are encouraged to carry a mobile phone. Race number is to go on the LEFT side of your Ski or Surf Boat. The Carlton Park SLSC ski tailer will be at Sandy Bay with some spare spots which will be made available on a first in first served however you will need to provide your own transport to Tinderbox. Race briefing will occur at Tinderbox at 9.45am. The drive from Sandy Bay to Tinderbox is approximately 45 minutes. Presentations will be on the beach at Sandy Bay immediately after the conclusion of the race. ALL other events will be conducted from Sandy Bay starting from 9.00 am. 24.01.2022 Important Notice regarding the Long Course 21 KM ski race on Saturday. Yesterday the wind was behaving and a downwind from the north was looking good. The lates...t weather predictions is for westerly winds which would make the northern and southern courses unlikely. Ski referee, Dave Russell-Green and the race committee are consulting with the BOM. to get the latest information. An out and back from Sandy Bay is a possibility. The final decision will be made on Thursday and advised by this page and shared. Be aware of the traffic congestion that will occur in Hobart on Saturday and make plenty of time to travel to the race start. See more

19.01.2022 Spring Skills & Safety - second course The August edition of our Spring Skills & Safety Course is fully booked, with quite a few paddlers missing out. Full details below and at https://www.nextlevelkayaking.com.au//spring-skills-safety We have a limited number of places available for our second Spring Skills & Safety Course, delivered in partnership with Paddle Tas. This course will be held in the comfort of the Clarence YMCA pool. The course will cover safety and rescue techniques suitable for ocean skis, surfskis and multisport kayaks in local beach and open water conditions. During this course we will simulate a range of self-rescue and assisted-rescue scenarios. The course will teach you the skills needed to become a competent and safe paddler when enjoying your local estuaries and beaches. This hands-on course emphasises safety awareness, skill development and practice as solutions to real-life problems likely to be experienced while paddling. Alongside the use of safety devices and a wide range of general safety, weather forecasting and equipment tips, our Spring Skills & Safety Course will arm you with knowledge and confidence to look after yourself and your friends while out paddling. When & Where: Saturday September 8th, Clarence YMCA pool (see registration link for a site map) 5.15pm to 7.15pm Suitable for: Ocean ski, surfski and multisport kayak paddlers of all levels What to bring: Swimming and/or paddling apparel suitable for repeated immersion in the pool over 2 hours A change of clothes for after the course Costs: $20 for current canoe club members (e.g. Derwent, Tamar, Launceston or Tasmanian Canoe Clubs - you will need to provide your Australian Canoeing number as proof of membership) $40 for non members Included: For both members & non members, course costs will include the provision of skis, paddles, PFD's and leg leashes (value $15). There is no need to bring your own equipment unless you really want to For non members, course costs will also include a 3 month "triallist" Derwent Canoe Club membership (value $30), through which you will be able to access local races, paddlesport education programs, and other events. There will be triallist membership forms available at the course for paddlers to fill in. Registered participants will be emailed course notes in advance to get them up to speed with the theory & basic concepts behind the course. The notes have been compiled from experience & research over the past 6 or 7 years and are a good rescource to keep and refer to from time to time. We'll have a selection of safety gear & apparel on display at the course.
