21.01.2022 The legends keep coming from our Surf World Museum. This time featuring: Mark "MR" Richards. Mark was born in 1957 and grew up in Newcastle NSW and learnt to surf at Blacksmiths Beach just south of Newcastle. He got his first taste of the Gold Coast when his family went to Rainbow Beach on holidays and Mark surfed Snapper Rocks. He's a 4 times World Champion and was inducted into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame in 1985. His nickname "The Wounded Seagull" came from his sp...layed arms stance when making turns and cutbacks. Marks twin fin board design changed the thinking of a generation of surfers by generating extra speed and tighter turns. Today he still lives in Newcastle with his wife Jenny and still runs the Mark Richards Surf Shop the same shop his parents started. See more

His natural talent and uncanny ability saw him enter the world pro surfing scene in the mid seventies. He rated in the top five of the world tour for eight consecutive years. He was ASP world champ in 1978 and ASP Masters champion in 1999 and 2003. Rabbit was also awarded the Order of Australia AM in 2009. 06.01.2022 Surf legends from our displays at Surf World museum. This week: Michael "MP" Peterson. 1952 - 2012 The legend of MP was born inside the barrel at Kirra. MP lived in various places growing up but settled in Coolangatta when he was 15. Started surfing on surf o planes, graduated to coolites before owning his first board in 1966. Between 1973 and 1975 he won every pro contest held in Australia including 3 consecutive Bells titles. 02.01.2022 There's been a huge amount of defining moments in the history of surfing. Surf World is looking at the most significant events over the years. Starting with the 60's where it really all began.

01.01.2022 Showcasing another legend from our museum. Today : Mark "Occy" Occhilupo. Born in Kurnell NSW, Mark's career reads like a movie script. He started surfing at age 9, and joined the World Tour when he was just 17. He had heaps of early success including a Pipe Masters Crown in 1985 and rose through the ranks to reach #3. Then he disappeared from the surfing world in the early 90's. He then made a comeback from a pretty turbulent time and weight gain to win the World Title in ...1999 at age 33. He was well liked, had a great sense of humour and a truly freakish natural talent. He officially retired from the tour in 2007. See more
