24.01.2022 The juniors putting in the work tonight @coachwoodford & @jessfantone taught the hinge & squat pattern, supplementary movements, the warmup, and conditioning at the end. Watch out for these juniors at nationals cause they are training to become physical beasts

23.01.2022 Hala Hegazy took out the C Grade in Wodonga last month! She hasn’t missed a training session without wearing the latest Surge tshirts!

23.01.2022 The SSP Online Platform is nearly ready And we are covering all areas you need to become a better squash player. Squash Fundamentals: This is the progression we use for coaching juniors. Swing Foundations is a long process to get right, but once mastered, it opens up so many more doors Physical Fundamentals: If you can’t move well, you aren’t going to get very far so we brought in @coachwoodford and his team from @woodfordssc to take charge of getting our players at their ...physical best (message me to be apart of the next strength workshop which is in 2 weeks) Mental Fundamentals: This area is huge. Without motivation, goals, and a clear direction of where you are going, climbing the rankings will be tough. More to come on this Health Fundamentals: Last but not least, your health plays a huge part in your success on court. Nutrition, sleep, and stress is constantly over-looked in teenagers yet it plays a pivotal role in performance So here are 34 areas you can start focusing on to become a better squash player. It’s not always about hitting targets on court. Exciting times ahead

23.01.2022 Good Luck to all Surge players this weekend in Wodonga @squash_racquetball_vic

22.01.2022 Junior Group Training is back as of next week! Wednesdays: 5-7pm Fridays: 5-7pm Sundays: 11am-1pm... Maximum 10 per session, must book in. Email [email protected]

18.01.2022 11-year-old Hala Hegazy doing the Quad Burner with Surge coach Jason Turnerthis routine focuses on your counter drop off a boast. The aim is to be comfortable taking the ball in early, and hitting the ball as far in front of your body as possible. The earlier you hit it, the less time your opponent has. Deception & Anticipation - if the drop shot is tight, chances are your opponent will have to cross court to avoid a stroke, or it’s the only shot they can play when the ba...ll is glued to the wall. This is where you have to recognise the quality of your drop, and assess if you should anticipate a cross court coming (stand higher on the T, look for the volley), or if you have to wait on the T and cover all options by being prepared to sprint in any direction Last part of this routine, it focuses on being able to scramble. Getting the ball back is a huge part of squash, it may not be pretty, but if you can keep the ball up for one more shot, at least the ralley continues, and your opponent will start to go finer with their short balls and eventually find the tin. Keeping the ball up is crucial for this routine, and it helps develop your attacking shots with margin

17.01.2022 2020-21 Summer Camp dates are out now at Mulgrave Country Club!

16.01.2022 Your physical ability underpins your skill ability Physical ability = strength, conditioning, reaction time, flexibility etc Skill ability = drop shot, lob, drive etc... Since your physicality influences your skills on a squash court, you should be looking to improve your strength and conditioning. Melbourne is still in lockdown so its just about all we can work on anyway So rather than thinking We are in lockdown, my skills are going to be bad when I get back on court, think I can improve physically so my skills can also increase When improving a skill, you need to either execute the skill quicker (e.g swing faster), have higher certainty (e.g less errors), or decrease energy expenditure (more efficient swing/movement) Physical training compliments squash specific skills, as it builds muscle mass, prevents injuries, increases core stability, increases power (exploding off the T) Part 2 tomorrow

16.01.2022 Last month @paddyo26 took out the B Reserve title in Wodonga! Well done Pat

15.01.2022 TIP #3: The tighter your strings, the more control you get. The looser your string, the more power you get. Some players like them really tight, however I’ve always preferred using looser string (22 pounds). The measurement used is in pounds

12.01.2022 10 days without squash courts... so now I’m going to be going live on Instagram everyday for a squash training session. All training you can do at home and it will work on your skills and fitness At 4pm I’m going to post a squash tip, so if you have any questions I will try make it apart of this section! 8pm will be story time on my Instagram Story. I’ll tell you all a story about my travels, training, tournament, something funny or more likely embarrassing ... Whilst more and more people are being effected by the corona virus and staying at home all day, I want people to have something to look forward to each day. Everyone is welcome to be apart of the Surge community no matter which club, coach, country, or ability. I’ll start with a story tonight at 8pm!

12.01.2022 @performancecoach_edmunds is running our players through a 9 week program that everyone can do with no equipment. Go give him a follow and send him a message letting him know that you are taking part! First session starts Monday. I’ll be posting the program day by day so make sure to keep up @woodfordssc

12.01.2022 All Salming, Grays & Unsquashable is 50% off until 11am today thanks to @squash.com.au !!! Message me if you can’t make it and you want to buy something!

11.01.2022 Harvey Allan putting in the work tonight, doing retrieval work back to one corner. To win the point, the player must complete 10 shots in a row back to one corner, whilst the coach can hit the ball in any 3/4 of the court. Scoring to 11 This drill places a huge emphasis on the players conditioning (as juniors get older, their matches go longer and we are preparing for that), and also playing high quality shots under large amounts of pressure. If the player can close the court down, then the coach can’t attack as effectively. Harvey recently won the Mulgrave Junior Club Championships, and is often referred to as Junior Champ. Good stuff Specter @harvey19allan @jasonturner__

09.01.2022 2 more weeks until reopening! Can’t wait to be back on court, and some new announcements to be made coming soon

07.01.2022 Today’s session. Send a message to @performancecoach_edmunds to get your copy of each session. Includes videos of how to do each exercise

06.01.2022 Christian Woodford coaching our juniors the squat pattern, starting bottom up. We are getting the basics right, before adding load

06.01.2022 Big thanks to @squash.com.au for the amazing gear. I use the Unsquashable Response racquet, and you can get 2 for $250 only at @squash.com.au Message me for a discount code as well

05.01.2022 TIP #1: Double Sock If you find yourself getting blisters on your feet, use two pairs of socks each session. Instead of your skin rubbing against your shoe, the extra layer provides a bit for cushioning and less rubbing. Some people even triple sock... If you haven’t gotten blisters on your feet yet, then you may not be running fast enough!

04.01.2022 THIS SATURDAY AT MULGRAVE 9-11AM Squash.com.au are setting up a pop-up store with Salming Racquets & Shoes, Grays & Unsquashable Racquets. If you can’t make it, try organise someone to go on your behalf, or message me directly. See their website for all items Squash.com.au is our squash equipment partner and we are thrilled to have our players taken care of with all the gear they need with huge savings

04.01.2022 We’ve been rebuilding Pat’s backhand and today was great to see the rewards coming through. The backhand is a very technical swing, and so many elements go into it which is why at a junior level it’s so important to get right now rather than building bad habits and needing to fix it later. The main changes we made was how his wrist came through the ball. Previously he broke his wrist when making connection with the ball, whereas now he locks his wrist in his preparation which... allows him to snap through before making contact, which gains more power and potential deception if chooses to go cross court last second Juniors typically struggle hitting off the back wall, this is because they mainly swing from their shoulder and don’t use any wrist. When the ball is deep in the corners, sometimes your only option is to use just your wrist as there is no space for a full swing

02.01.2022 A new personal best for Adam Hegazy in the 6-point ghost coming in at 14.30 seconds. His footwork has come a long way in the past 6 months, there is still some room to improve but it’s looking a lot cleaner and faster One of the biggest mistakes when players ghost is that they don’t recover back to the T and reposition themselves square on the T. There is no point training a pattern where you cut the corner, or take different steps than you normally would in a match. Make sure you reset on the T after each ghost and get yourself in a position where you can cover any corner Good to be back coaching this week

01.01.2022 TIP #2: Many players I’ve seen don’t know this, you actually have to put your grip going in the right direction depending if your are left or right handed. You want the groves running with your thumb, not against it. The picture shows right handed grips
