20.01.2022 September is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) awareness month. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is a health condition that affects about 10 million people in the world. However over half of these people are unaware that they have it. The exact cause is unknown, but it is considered a hormonal problem. Awareness helps the public understand that symptoms like irregular periods and pelvic pain should not be ignored and getting it checked is necessary. ... About half of people with PCOS will have weight gain and obesity that is difficult to manage. If you are overweight, weight loss can improve both reproductive aspects like regulating your menstrual cycle and helping with ovulation, as well as metabolic aspects like reducing insulin. Weight loss may also help to improve your PCOS symptoms. For more information on PCOS: https://www.pcosaa.org/overview To discuss weight loss call 9379 5479 or 9428 7556

18.01.2022 Weight Issues Network - COVID-19 Pandemic Survey The Weight Issues Network is a group supported by the Obesity Collective which is composed of people with the lived experience in Obesity. ANZMOSS is one of the groups that has provided seed funding for them to get off the ground, as we understand that a consumer voice can be a stronger advocate for support of Obesity services than Clinicians, because of our perceived conflicts of interest and expertise, given the current climate of distrusting data and expertise. They are interested in understanding the impact that the Covid crisis is having on those with the lived experience of Obesity. In order to do this they have set up a survey that they would like to get out to those with weight problems.

12.01.2022 October is National Mental Health month Mental Health month is an initiative of Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA). The intention is to reach out to and... educate as many Australians as possible, to help reduce stigma and facilitate positive and non-judgemental discussion surrounding the important topic of mental health in Australia. Incorporates World Mental Health Day held on 10 October. During the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritising mental health and wellbeing has been more important than ever. 1 in 5 Australians are affected by mental illness annually, yet many don’t seek help because of stigma. Experiencing stigma and discrimination negatively impacts our mental health just as much as our physical health. Weight stigma is no different. Obesity stigma is associated with significant physiological and psychological consequences, including increased depression, anxiety and decreased self-esteem. If you would like to discuss weight loss options please call 9379 5479 or 9428 7556 to make an appointment. 01.01.2022 It’s National Nutrition Week! During October Nutrition Australia encourages Australians to increase their vegetable consumption to meet the recommended five serves per day. According to Nutrition Australia, recent studies suggest that only 4% of Australian’s are meeting the recommended daily serves of vegetables. After bariatric surgery, incorporating vegetables into your diet is essential so that you can meet your nutritional requirements and to assist with weight loss succe...ss. Although meeting the recommended serves of vegetables can be difficult after weight loss surgery due to decreased volume capacity in the stomach, reduced appetite and taste changes. To overcome this, aim to incorporate vegetables into your main meals and snacks where possible. Remember variety is key! So make sure you include a wide range of colours on your plate. To discuss your diet quality call us on 9379 5479 or 9428 7556 and make an appointment with one of our Accredited Practising Dietitian's. #TryFor5 #NationalNutritionWeek

01.01.2022 Tips for the festive season With 2020 coming to an end, you may be very excited to catch up with family and friends so here are a few tips to remember regarding your health after weight loss surgery. Don’t skip meals before going out. Eat a light meal before you go so you don’t overindulge on snacks and treats. Think about what you drink. Best to have no alcohol, as it contributes no nutrition and contains lots of calories. Otherwise, limit your alcohol intake by making every... second drink a glass of water. When eating, try to serve yourself. This way you have control over your portion size. And remember you don’t have to finish the food on your plate so when you feel you’ve had enough, feel free to put your plate down. Encourage some activity during this time. A walk, shoot some basketball hoops, a game of back-yard cricket. This gives you the opportunity to burn some calories (and avoid the food coma) Remember your vitamins, and basic principles of protein and low starch veg 80% of the time. Roast chicken, turkey or lamb and fresh seafood are great options. Christmas treats in the other 20% Good luck See more
