23.01.2022 Sunday Firsts Match Report What a fantastic match played by the boys today on a difficult pitch and in very hot conditions. The scoreline doesn’t begin to do it justice. After winning our fourth toss on the trot Surrey elected to Bat against a strong Monash Uni side who are sitting in second place on the ladder. The pitch was low and very slow so we were quickly reduced to 4/8 and looking at a very short afternoon of cricket. Phil Hayes entered the fray for what was prob...ably his second or third game in the last 3 years and showed us the value of technique and patience regardless of the conditions. Phil batted a marathon 28 overs and ground out an invaluable 14 runs to ensure we batted to the 44th of our 45 overs allotment. Scoring was very difficult and it was a 36 run partnership between Phil and Ben Andrew that got us to a total (73) that was potentially defendible on that wicket. Ben played by far his longest and best knock for the side, patiently working his way to what was the top score of the day (16). As the tail started to fade away Lachlan Wyver (on his senior debut) played an innings of great determination and made an excellent 14 not out. Lachie Bell and Roland Murphy playing their second senior game opened the bowling and sent a shock through the Monash camp. Bowling superb line and length deliveries with great consistency and accuracy they reduced Monash to 5/25 by the end of their 4 over spells. Game on! Stephen Bell (4 overs 1/5) and Adam Rixon (4 overs for 16) were the first change pairing and Belly wrinkled out another quick wicket whilst Adam had the Monash boys on tenterhooks with his unpickable wrong un. Monash buckled down and started accumulating at a slow pace. Lachie Wyver on debut bowled an economical spell (4 overs for 11). A 30 run partnership looked to be enough for Monash until Barnaby Smith bowled a fantastic spell of leg spin to open the game up. (3 overs, 1/2, 2 consecutive maidens and very unlucky with this writer dropping a sitter which would have had him 2/2). Skipper Greg Smith returned to the openers with Monash needing just 12 to win. Lachie(8 overs 3/18) and Roland (8 overs 2/23) were simply brilliant bowling another four threatening overs each before Monash were able to scrape together the 12 they needed. The lads each bowled 2 maidens in this spell and the experienced Monash Captain (whose determined 24 won them the game) said that he had never seen players of such a young age who could bowl with that level of control and consistency for so long. It was a great effort by the young bowling group. Only four overs were delivered by a bowler over the age of 14 and they nearly stole the game for us. Most of the catches were held with Justin Hayes in his first senior game taking an excellent high catch, Ben and Greg one each and Belly thankful to hold on to one of his son’s bowling. Congrats to Phil, Ben and Lachie Wyver on great knocks in tricky conditions.
21.01.2022 Fourth XI Match Report R 3 This weeks report is a little harder to write. We had significant change in the team with 5 new players from the last contest, it was good to see Noah and Miles play their first games for the season. We won the toss and batted against the curators advice, but to be fair Shayne has been telling captain’s to bowl first on Wattle for the last 10 years regardless, what else is a fast bowler gonna say.... The team got rolled for 62 inside 35 overs with little good news. Outside a wily left hand opener their bowling offered little but we lacked the ability to build partnerships with wickets falling at regular intervals. The highlight was a 9th wicket partnership between David Wu & Ben Andrew that lasted 10 overs, they showed a lot of resolve and put some of the shot making decisions of the senior players to shame. The captain would also like to take this opportunity to apologise again to Michael Wu for a disastrous run out, he took it with better grace than I would have. A big shout out to Ben who played with a clearly sore leg but helped out regardless. While we didn’t have a lot of runs to play with the bowlers did an outstanding job. Tom Tsatas (0/15) & Utsi Kapadia (0/7) bowled with purpose and again were unlucky not to take an edge time and time again. David Wu (0/9) at first change looked unplayable and George Tsatas was his typical miserly self. Zac Matters (1/3) came on and his stump to stump bowling reaped immediate rewards, dismissing their dangerous captain with a clear LBW decision. Miles Hilton (1/2) was as equally effective at the other end and forced an edge with a sharp catch taken by David. That brought out their big hitter, after a some agricultural swinging and missing George Tsatas (1/10) got the predictable wicket and while we kept up the pressure it was just a matter of time until they passed out score. Hard to find a man of the match this week but I’m giving it to Amol Andrekar who hit the second highest score and put his hand up to keep wickets for the last 10 overs when Ben had to retire hurt. This is but a speedbump in what I’m sure will be a good season for the team, see you all on Tuesday. Campbell Chambers

12.01.2022 Sunday Firsts Match Report The Sunday Firsts visited East Malvern Taronga today for our Round 3 match. We were a man short due to an injury to Ben Andrew so we knew we were in for some hard work. The weather cleared just as we arrived and we won the toss and elected to bat first.... The pitch played very low with some balls almost rolling past the stumps. Roland Murphy playing first first senior game (and first game on turf) showed amazing composure and determination to grind out 12 runs from 54 deliveries on a very tricky surface. His 52 run partnership with Dad, Kieran was the absolute highlight of the day and we hope will give the Murphy boys some very special memories. Kieran top scored with an impressive 45 and the rest of us did not much at all with the bat. Chasing our all out 9/78 East Malvern Toronga lost just one wicket and ran us down in the 16th over. Miles Hilton the pick of the bowlers with 1/9 off his five overs of nagging medium pacers landing on the perfect length. Michael Margetis bowled what must surely have been the fastest 2 overs delivered in this grade for a very long time and debutant Roland Murphy showed his all round skill with 5 overs of accurate left armers that deserved a wicket or 2. All the boys bowled well but they were up against it with EMT’s very strong top order too good for us on the day. The boys are getting better and better every game and we are building towards our first win of the season very soon.
