25.01.2022 Did you know that speech involves complex motor movements of the lips, jaw, tongue, soft palate and vocal chords? No wonder some children find it tricky! This is not in English, but it shows wonderfully the coordination of all of the oral musculature required for speech.

23.01.2022 This is something I feel very strongly about. When do you stop reading to your child? You dont! Older children who can read still enjoy being read to and apart from being enjoyable, it still exposes them to new vocabulary, concepts and sentence and story structure. Plus youre leading by example and showing them that reading is wonderful. If theres one thing Id recommend for every family, it is that you read to your children .

22.01.2022 Here is a really beautiful example of how being in an inclusive environment is so positive for children of all backgrounds. In this childcare setting two children put this Elsa doll into another childs standing frame and then proceeded to put her AFOs (ankle-foot orthoses) on. How gorgeous .

22.01.2022 This one is a shout out to all my amazing parents and care-givers. Its not easy at times, but you are all doing an amazing job .

22.01.2022 Hello to all my lovely clients and families . These are certainly challenging times for us all and I am hoping that you are all keeping safe and comfortable. Due to the risks associated with the Covid -19 virus spread, I will not be doing face to face sessions for the time being. I am still here though and as keen as ever to support you all. This is me in my new home office where Ill be offering speech pathology services online until the restrictions ease and it is safe t...o see clients face to face again. I will be contacting you all over the coming week to offer appointments, but please feel free to send me a message with any questions or concerns you may have. It is so important to stay connected during this difficult time and we are so fortunate that we have access to technology so that we can keep up our social contacts and even our therapies . Talk to you all soon and sending all my positive vibes your way xx. See more

19.01.2022 Happy Easter to all my lovely clients and to their mums and dads: please enjoy this time with your precious and incredibly courageous children .

19.01.2022 April is Autism awareness month. Autistic children and adults have so many challenges operating within the neurotypical-dominated world. I love this little clip as it really simply breaks down some of the key points we neurotypicals need to consider in order to properly understand our autistic children, friends and coworkers. Leave your assumptions at the door, embrace their differences and be prepared for your lives to be enriched .

18.01.2022 Merry Christmas from my family to yours . Susan Short Speech Pathology will be closed for holidays until the 9th of January 2018. To all my clients: your homework for the holidays is to have as much fun as possible with your family and to have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year .

18.01.2022 A new year calls for a new play kitchen. Thanks Dad for putting it together! I am a big advocate of play-based communication intervention and home-corner type games are a favourite with so many kids. We can pretend to cook up a storm while working on play skills, receptive and expressive language, speech and social communication. Bon appetit!!

18.01.2022 I love this clip! I am a big advocate of empowering children and their families with the confidence to share their autism diagnosis and stories. I love how proudly this boy discusses his autism and the responses of his classmates are amazing. Educating the village around your child is so important. It is really hard for others to understand what they do not know.

17.01.2022 Kids and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can have trouble navigating social communication and it is not suprising as it can be very confusing! Speech pathologists can help with all aspects of communication including these tricky social rules. Sometimes what may appear to be rudeness would be better described as a lack of skills in social communication. As this image demonstrates, much of our social communication is very illogical, so it is no wonder the logical ASD brain finds it difficult to navigate.

17.01.2022 I have been having lots of fun lately with the little ones in our online therapy sessions. Nothing stops play! This is just a little clip showing one of the many characters and activities that have featured in our play this week. Targeting wh- questions, vocabulary, description, sentences, reciprocity and fun!

17.01.2022 Im back! Holidays are over, so its time to get playing . I am taking bookings now for 2018. I am registered for HCWA, Betterstart and NDIS so if you have concerns about your childs speech, language, literacy, social communication or feeding skills please contact me for an appointment. Looking forward to a wonderful year of helping families .

16.01.2022 This is a lovely acknowledgement that being a special needs parent can be challenging. It is okay to have feelings of sorrow, anger or frustration sometimes and it is important to understand that your child may have those feelings too. Remember to look after yourself and above all, enjoy your precious and amazing children .

16.01.2022 Before I was a speech pathologist I studied linguistics and I find the evolution of the english language fascinating. New words appear and the meanings of words and grammatical rules change over time. Sometimes I look at the errors that children make in their verbal language and wonder if those errors will be the drivers of future transformations in the english language. Only time will tell!

15.01.2022 English spelling is crazy and confusing! BUT there are systematic ways to tackle it. I love helping kids with their litetacy skills and tomorrow I am commencing training for the Sounds Write program: an evidence based phonics program to assist children with reading and spelling difficulties. I really look forward to implementing my new skills with my clients .

15.01.2022 This is such a beautiful example of allowing your young child to take a communication turn by creating a game routine and giving your child time to respond. Notice how the baby vocalises you keep the game going? So wonderful!

15.01.2022 Some very important advice .

14.01.2022 Some children and adults may need to use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). AAC can be low or high tech and is vital in supporting communication for people who are minimally or non-verbal, or whose speech is very difficult to understand. If someone uses AAC it is so important that it is available to them in all environments and at all times. Removing the AAC is akin to taping a verbal persons mouth closed. Essentially, you are taking away their words. So please, never put an AAC device in the corner!

13.01.2022 What do speech pathologists do? Heres a good breakdown by our governing body, Speech Pathology Australia. We do far more than some realise .

12.01.2022 I am very excited to be welcoming clients back to my new clinic space at 3 Eaglesfield St from tomorrow. For those who see her, dont worry, Caroline the OT is right next door and we are both looking forward to seeing you all in person again. We will, of course, be following all of the COVID-19 safety and hygiene measures to ensure your safety. See you all soon !

12.01.2022 I am very excited to be telling this classic story in the these beautifully painted stones today .

12.01.2022 AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) does not delay speech and language development and in fact can facilitate them. Being open to AAC can seriously improve communication outcomes for children and adults with a wide range of presentations.

10.01.2022 Parents and teachers who live and work with ASD children: you can sign up for and watch these free webinars. I have seen Tony Attwood speak and I think he is wonderful. He and Sue Larkey have such warm and positive views about our ASD kids and, combined, they are a wealth of information and full of practical ideas that can be helpful in assisting your ASD children to thrive in the tricky, neurotypical world. This is on my highly recommended viewing list .

10.01.2022 Proud to be a language nerd . This diagram is great and shows some of the parts of language speech pathologists can help their clients with .

10.01.2022 I spend a lot of time as a speech pathologist supporting clients with autism and their families. I have also had my own personal journey with autism. Here is a little clip of my son and I discussing autism and how his theatre group has helped him to build his confidence.

09.01.2022 This is a fantastic video and helps to demonstrate what an incredibly complex motor exercise speech is. Just look at the amount of muscles and coordination involved! No wonder some of our clients have troubles.

08.01.2022 Play is so important for young children. It is not just fun, it is how they learn about so many things. Play is developmental and a 2 year old plays very differently to a 5 year old. A very important part of my role is figuring out what level of play a child is at, so that I can best engage with them and create language learning opportunities. I also love helping families to be more intune with their childs play skills and to show them how to assist with the development of these skills over time.

07.01.2022 We can definitely get too bogged down in eye contact. Maintaining eye contact can be extremely stressful for people on the spectrum. Sometimes we need to open our minds and broaden our expectations of communicative behaviours to suit all members of our community.

07.01.2022 I have just completed the 2 day LAMP (Language Acquisition through Motor Planning) training and I was particularly inspired by this clip featuring Chris Bugai talking about making choices for our clients using the Least Dangerous Presumption principal. LAMP is an AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) approach for minimally-verbal or non-verbal children and adults. Communication is a human right and as speech pathologists, it is our responsibility to make sure that, if our clients cannot communicate verbally, they have the supports available for them to communicate in an alternative way. The words that particularly struck a chord with me as a clinician and my philosophy when supporting my clients was: "If you are going to fail, fail because you believe in a persons potential." Yes!!

07.01.2022 Communication is a human right, so on this, the International Day of People with Disability, let us celebrate and support all forms of communication .

07.01.2022 This is a perfect example of procedural expository discourse gone wrong . I often target this type of expository discourse (explaining how something is done) with my kids with verbal language difficulties. I might ask them to explain how to play a particular game to me as I though I had never heard of it and had no idea how to play it. As this video demonstrates, it is not actually that easy!

06.01.2022 As I work very closely with an amazing occupational therapist, I cannot agree with this more .

06.01.2022 This looks like a fun day out for 4WD and country music enthusiasts and it is supporting Autism Qld - a wonderful organisation .

03.01.2022 What is AAC? Augmentative and Alternative Communication. Speech pathologists can find appropriate AAC systems to support and enrich communication for individuals for whom verbal language is either not possible, or not sufficient to meet their communication needs. Communication is a fundamental human right and it is our job to make sure that it is possible for everyone. What a special job we have .

02.01.2022 This article touches on some very important things to consider for parents of children with disabilities who are starting, or continuing school. It is not always an easy journey, but doing your research and maintaining regular and respectful communication with schools are very important strategies in advocating for your childs education.
