11.01.2022 So, I have seen a couple of comments on Facebook the last couple of days re the drought from city-based people. The first one was why don’t we move our stock to... grassy areas before this happens. Well if that lady could tell me where there is some spare grass, I’d be extremely grateful! But it’s the second comment that really got me. Another lady who remarked about farmers who are living where we do, but mostly directed at farmers in marginal areas. Why don’t you just move to somewhere where it rains. Or at least move your stock to somewhere where there is feed. You choose to live there so stop complaining. This comment has stuck with me and I have been racking my brains how to explain it simply so that people can understand. Stock, as do people, need a certain amount of area to run on, and that differs depending on the area they live in. But this is the simplest way I can think to explain it to city folk who are ignorant to the ways of farming. And I don’t mean this in a condescending way, but I am just to trying and make it easy for them to understand. I am a cattle farmer, so I will just use cattle as my example. So using rough figures from the MLA 2017 (https://www.mla.com.au//fast-facts--maps/mla_beef-fast-fac ) , NSW has around 5 million head of cattle. Currently about 90% of NSW is affected by drought, but let’s be really conservative and put it at 60%, so roughly that equates to 3 million head that would need moving to somewhere where there is feed. And don’t forget the native and wild animals (Kangaroos, wild pigs, wild deer, wild dogs) that need feeding and will move to where they can find it. So, now let’s pretend those cattle are people who need moving. Now let’s move them to, gee, hmmm let’s move them to Bondi because it has the beach which is nice, and smashed avo on toast and a good coffee. Oh, and it rains in Bondi. More than it rains out here at Merriwa! So, working with like figures from 2017, let say NSW has a population of 7,895,800. 60% of that is 4,737,480. So, let’s move those 4,737,480 to Bondi. Let’s add a few tourists to be the roo, deer, etc. that also need food. Can you imagine it. All those people living in Bondi, because that’s where the food is (for the moment). All needing food, hospital care if they are sick, somewhere to sleep at night.. Whilst the 4,737,480 people, plus those who were already living there, and don’t forget the tourists, are all eating their way through all the avos in Bondi, it still hasn’t rained where they originally came from, so there are no new avo crops going in, - there’s no food back there so no point in going home. Pretty quickly the smashed avo and the lattes are starting to run out in Bondi. The food sellers (let’s call them cafes) that have some left are starting to jack up the prices because they know they people are hungry and need the avo to survive, and that they are one of the few cafes that have any left, so they can charge whatever they want, and people are going to have to pay. They are hungry. So, the people need to start looking elsewhere for their avo and lattes. Where are they going to get it from? It’s still drought where they came from 60% of NSW and a lot of QLD as well. People are dying of starvation. Maybe we need to think about moving the people again.. Somewhere where there is food and where it rains a lot. Any suggestions anyone? It is not until the food dries up that the city is going to sit up and take notice. The drought is real, and it is having a major impact that is being felt far beyond the farm gates. And it won’t be over when the rain finally comes. #thankafarmerforyournextmeal #foodsecurity #drought *****EDIT****** Wow! I have been blown away by the speed at which this post has been liked and shared. I have been asked to run for PM, been called an smart arse, been berated for being a farmer and raping and pillaging the land, and been incredibly supported by complete strangers. It just goes to show how one small photo and a few words can start a conversation. I am just a humble farmers wife who is doing her best to keep up with all the messages and comments, so my apologies if I haven’t replied to you personally. I have posted another comment on my profile. For those who have asked about what you can do to help, please read it and like and share it too as it has links to some amazing charities. Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart. I am truly humbled by your support
