24.01.2022 Many of us across Boroondara are immigrants, as I am, or come from immigrant parents. Our diversity is one of this country's great strengths. But it's often a complex journey for us. I'm sharing here the article I wrote for yesterday's edition of The Age. It reflects my own perspective on the complicated decisions of what we keep and what we jettison of our past when we move countries. 18.01.2022 As you may have heard, the Victorian Government has announced the $5.3 billion Big Housing Build project to deliver 12,000 new social and affordable homes across Melbourne and regional Victoria. As part of this project, the redevelopment of the Bills Street Public Housing Estate has been identified as a Fast Start site, noting it has been prepared for redevelopment. According to the website for the newly created Housing Victoria (www.housing.vic.gov.au), the Victorian G...overnment now intends to construct 206 new social and affordable homes on the Bills Street site, beginning in late 2021, with completion estimated for 2023. The website also notes the masterplan has been updated in response to previous feedback received and that the Government intends to provide further opportunities for feedback from the community on the masterplan before the plans are finalised. The Victorian Government will assess and approve proposals funded by the Big Housing Build, meaning these proposals will not be subject to the usual planning application process and Boroondara Council will not be the decision maker. We have contacted the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), which has overall responsibility for social housing. In response, DHHS has advised they have no further information to share at this time. We will ensure the Riversdale community, are informed as soon the masterplan is available for comment and we will continue to advocate for appropriate social and built form outcomes for the site. The Local Member for Hawthorn, John Kennedy MP, has committed to reconstituting the Bills Street Hawthorn Consultative Committee. As your local representative, I will be nominating to join this committee. I know this is an important issue for many of us in Riversdale.
