09.01.2022 I shared this info on a networking group this morning and have been asked to share it more widely. Hope these tips help someone. Happy to discuss what products we carry that can assist with any of these issues Tips on how to avoid maskne (mask-induced-acne for the uninitiated ).... Maskne - yes, it’s a thing. It doesn’t just refer to acne - although this is the most common result of wearing a mask all day, it can also refer to skin redness and irritation. Wearing a mask is the new normal for so many people. We’ve had to start wearing them all day, every day, at work and since I’ve been watching and waiting, expecting this to happen, I’ve been stocking up on skincare info about how to adjust to this new dynamic. The plus side of wearing a mask is that it protects us from spreading viruses. The downside is that it may not be quite as easy for our skin to adjust. When you wear a mask daily, your skin is exposed to humidity and irritation from the mask being close to the skin. You may possibly also experience rubbing of the skin, especially on the nose, cheeks and chin. After wearing a mask it’s common to see sweat, dirt, oil, make-up, sunscreen and moisturiser on the inside of the mask. Here are some recommendations to help make sure your skin looks great beneath the mask: If you’re wearing a fabric mask wash it after each use. It’s safer for you from a health perspective and a skincare standpoint. Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent. You already know the importance of keeping your hands clean and washing them often during this time. In addition, keep your face clean. You may want to keep face wipes on you when you’re out and about, wipes are key to keeping your skin as clean as possible when you take off your mask. After using a face wipe use a gentle facial cleanser for sensitive or irritated skin if you have any irritation. In the evening use a facial cleanser that will clear clogged pores, remove excess oil, make up and impurities. If you are suffering from acne, a mask or wash targeting acne can be used 3 to 4 times a week to prevent or treat acne. If you’re dealing with skin irritation the first thing to note is to be gentle on your skin and use products designed to calm, nurture, moisturise and protect over time. To help calm irritated skin down, look for a product containing ingredients such as calamine to calm the skin and moisture-attracting glycerine to help skin feel softer and more comfortable. As we continue to adapt and adjust psychologically, hopefully these tips will help with the physical discomfort.
