24.01.2022 Santa made an early special trip to Talwood last night to check out the lovely rain and called into the Talwood Christmas tree to catch up with the good boys and girls. A lovely night celebrating Christmas in Talwood!

23.01.2022 The GRC Wild Dog Advisory Committee, comprising of graziers from across our region and Council officers, met last week to discuss the surge in pressure from wild dogs who cause havoc with our sheep, wool, goat and beef industries. The National Wild Dog Management Coordinator, Greg Mifsud was also in attendance. Multiple species management is seen as the way forward for dealing with wild dogs. Several of the graziers noted that management of foxes enables increased success wi...th wild dog trapping and this led to a richer biodiversity on their farms, with one farmer commenting on sightings of plains turkeys since his focus on combined wild dog and fox control. Council invests significant resources to assist landowners to combat pests and wild dogs. 45% of the Council rural services budget is spent on wild dog management, with 33% on maintenance of 220kms of wild dog check fences, serving to protect the grazing industries in our agricultural region. The committee also discussed the benefits of cluster fencing, the new round of cluster fencing grants, trapping, scalp bounties, and the baiting program. Agriculture is the largest industry in our area and we need to look after it! I’m keen to talk to anyone in the GRC area who has thoughts and comments about wild dog control. Please call me on 0427 712250.

16.01.2022 The FIRST 5 FOREVER babies and toddler sessions are back in the Goondiwindi Library from Thursday. Click on the link to book your spot (that’s what we do in Covid times). The library has got the socially distancing organised. First 5 Forever is a family literacy program with the primary aim of providing strong early literacy foundations for all Queensland children aged 0-5 years. First 5 Forever connects families to the information, resources and support they need to buil...d the best foundation for their child’s future language and literacy development. How do we do that in Goondiwindi? Sarah will guide the group through a welcome song and some rhymes, and will read a book and involve participants in an activity. If you don’t live in Goondiwindi you can still participate by the online program in the same way many have enjoyed the program over the past few months. https://www.grc.qld.gov.au/homepage//first-5-forever-online

13.01.2022 Council held our monthly ordinary meeting in Inglewood this morning, the first ordinary meeting held in Inglewood since 2009. It was great to share the momentous occasion with the community members who formed the public gallery, and we look forward to holding one meeting each year in Inglewood, and one in Texas. Later in the day we were briefed on the Inglewood flood action plan and then I visited the 1956 and 1976 flood markers around town with a few fellow Councillors to get a better grip on how extensive the floods have been and to better understand the potential of future flood events.

13.01.2022 This event is for local business owners and employers who would like to hear more about employment and skilling incentives that are currently available to businesses, especially around apprenticeships and traineeships.

09.01.2022 The Toowoomba Hospital Foundation brought their inaugural Great Western Road Trip through our region recently, raising funds for a Darling Downs mobile mental health outreach program. The rally visited the Texas Rabbit Works, the Yelarbon silos, and the Customs House and Gunsynd statue In Goondiwindi. I caught up with them at the Talwood Hotel and later at Sellina and Scott Bate’s farm where the 80 participants heard from Sellina about life and agriculture in the Talwood district, and the kids loved feeding and playing with the kids . The group was especially generous, ensuring they left money in our towns.

08.01.2022 A new location due to the predicted rain.

05.01.2022 Yesterday was one of those WOW days. With a few fellow Councillors and GRC staff, I spent the morning with Victor Steffensen in the Ininbar Reserve in the central north of our region learning about land management through the introduction of fire into the landscape and the practices of how that is done. When Leichhardt explored that area almost 200 years ago, that reserve would have been semi-open box poplar with heavy grass cover. Yesterday we saw how the box has become sk...eleton like and choked out by the more invasive species. Victor pointed out how the landscape could be a whole lot healthier and that means more usable for grazing. The landscape is not as natural as it was 200 years ago but with the introduction of traditional fire control, the landscape could be brought back to a healthier environment which can feed into modern day opportunities like agriculture. Lots to think about! Council manages 9000 hectares of reserves and stock routes, and our rural services team is noticing a thickening of invasive species in some of these reserves. As a dynamic Council we understand there are a range of options that would work within our region and we are keen to explore them. Thanks to SQ Landscapes for bringing Victor to meet with us.

05.01.2022 Missing the Goondiwindi Argus? Here's the low down on how to access the free weekly digital version. It's the same great paper; just a different format.

04.01.2022 I donned my gardening gloves for a fun morning helping the St Mary’s Year 3 students plant trees and shrubs at the Water Park. I remember the excitement of my youngest son when he did this 7 years ago and we still like to visit ‘his’ tree all these years later. And, I occasionally visit ‘my’ tree planted on Tree Planting Day at my primary school in the late 70s and remember how fun that day was. Thanks to SQ Landscapes for teaching us about healthy plants, the GRC Parks & Gardens team for helping and Tait Toyota for enabling this program.

04.01.2022 BOM has installed an official weather station in Goondiwindi. What a wonderful Christmas present this is for the Goondiwindi district and especially our farmers. Council is now in discussions with regards to a radar which we hope to have here in a couple of years. This would measure weather conditions including rainfall intensity, high level winds, dust - even grasshoppers! Fingers crossed. As for now, bring on more rain! Media release: The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM)...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Goondiwindi was in the national spotlight on the week end when GRC hosted 3 one-day safe and efficient livestock handling workshops for the transport industry. The workshops were run by Goondiwindi Regional Skills Investment Strategy (RSIS) project, a two year initiative between our Council and the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training. GRC RSIS Co-ordinator Sam Noon saw the need in our region for training of safer work practices and animal welfare outcome...s in relation to the task of handling livestock throughout the supply chain. Facilitated by industry expert and leader in this field, Tom Shepherd, the course focussed on practical and theory aspects of animal behaviour and handling techniques. The importance of cattle handling in freight operations was highlighted to participants with data collected from a beef CRC trial comparing the impact of stock handling methods on weight loss. Two mobs of 90 head each were weighed at farm departure and again after a 350km trip. The first mob handled in a low stress environment from muster to loading, had a curfew loss of 19kg or 5.24% compared to the second mob handled in a higher stress manner (noise, sticks, prodders) where the loss was 29kg or 8% of the animal weight. At the time of trial the difference equated to $35 per animal and in 2019 they moved 166,000 head equating to a potential loss or gain of $5,810,000. The course has been dubbed the first of its kind in the transport industry and various participating transport operators said they have been seeking this training for their drivers for some time. Senator Susan McDonald and Queensland Trucking Assn Ltd CEO Gary Mahon travelled to Goondiwindi to show their support. Thanks to Frasers Livestock Transport for hosting the event and Smithfield Cattle Company and Cunningham Cattle Co for supplying cattle for the practical element.

03.01.2022 This morning in the far south-east of our Council region, in the beautiful Dumeresq Valley, Mark and Ed and their team were planting 130 hectares of pecan nut trees. It was exciting to see the planting process and to hear about their plans. There’s great diversification of agriculture in our region.

02.01.2022 ‘Off With Their Heads’ opened in the Goondiwindi Arts Space last night. Well done to young Goondiwindi artist Grace Norman on her first solo exhibition and courage to draw caricatures of each of our Councillors. During all the years I’ve been involved with Aspects Art Show, I never thought I’d be the subject of art but this has been fun. Exhibition is open until 1st December - make sure you check it out.
