24.01.2022 Artist Spotlight - Liesel Badorrek Liesel Badorrek is a writer and performer based in Sydney and will be performing at the upcoming Six Quick Chicks. She is founder and director of Loose Canon Arts, which has created and toured new work for young people throughout Asia and the Middle East, as well as presenting seasons at Carriageworks, the Famous Spiegeltent and Sydney Opera House. In 2015, she created and directed a new physical theatre work, Trash Alchemy, which was prese...nted as part of the WOW Children’s Festival at Casula Powerhouse in Sydney. Liesel is currently primary director for award winning children's theatre producers, CDP. She has directed the 26 & 49 Storey Tree House series as well as The Gruffalo andRoom on the Broom. El Kid, her children's opera based on the Billy Goats Gruff story was presented as part of Opera Australia's school program in 2016. She is also the director of the Six Quick Chick shows. Artists statement - ‘I see a landscape in every fragment’ 'The composition is a construction of a crushed can, floor tile fragment, plastic plate. ‘Empire’ seeks to investigate the figurative aspects of the refuse we create as humans. 16.01.2022 Artist Spotlight - Vashti Hughes Vashti Hughes has worked as an underground theatre and cabaret performer in Sydney for the past 20 years, and is one of the founding members of Six Quick Chicks. While still in her 20s, Vashti went from her own fledgling performances to curating cabarets. She ran a monthly cabaret night at La Bar on Oxford St, with a new character born to compere each month. She has revived a 1928 last classic jazz poem, The Wild Party (Melbourne Comedy Festi...val and Raval), co-wrote cabaret show Schnecke Nudel which she performed in Sydney (Darlinghurst Theatre), Hong Kong (Fringe Bar), Shanghai (the Glamour Room) and Singapore (Raffles), and her one-woman show, Mum’s In, played at the Kings Cross Hotel for multiple seasons over numerous years. Most recently Vashti has used another Kings Cross landmark, the minuscule Piccolo Bar, for her new work, Piccolo Tales, featuring the legendary owner Vittorio, an octogenarian Sicilian who is at least one foot shorter than Vash and more than 30 years older. 13.01.2022 Artist Spotlight - Matthew Syres SUSS is proud to be presenting Matthew Syres this Saturday eve as part of Ex-Periment - A Festival of Sound. Matthew Syres has been an instrumental figure within Sydney’s experimental music scene for many years. He is the founder and curator of The Sounds Unsound, a monthly improvised music event. He co-founded Sydney-based improvisational quartet Forenzics and the bands Svntax Error and Helvetica Noise. ... Matthew has an eccentric approach to both the guitar and the Theremin, using multiple effects, delays and looping to build complex improvised sonic textures informed by noise, post-rock, industrial and soundscape music. Since launching we've had the pleasure of featuring an amazing array of incredible live acts, the Zoology, the Loud Hailers, Scruffamudda, Wawawow, Svntax Error, Vashti Hughes, Christa Hughes, Reza Feza, White Knuckle Fever, CloudBird, the Liz Martin Band, Bernie Hayes, Dog Trumpet, Smitty & B.Goode, Rubber Necker, On the Stoop, Trevor Brown, Ben Fink, Loui...s Burdett, Matthew Syres, Elsen Price, Keyna Wilkins, Danny Heifetz and Tom Schutzinger...But we're just getting started... 03.01.2022 Artist Spotlight - Christa Hughes SUSS host extraordinaire, blues belter and vaudeville vamp, Christa Hughes is a Sydney star of cabaret and will be performing at the upcoming Six Quick Chicks. Inspired by some of the early blues records in her father’s collection, Christa first started singing when she was a teenager with her father, jazz pianist, Dick Hughes. She opened and sang with international blues artists when they were in Sydney such as Brownie McGhee, swamp boogie ...queen Katie Webster, and Champion Jack Dupree. Christa travelled around the world, singing in NYC, Edinburgh, London and Paris, and returned to Australia in 2000 and wrote and starred in shows Beer Drinking Woman, Sleepless Beauty and Temptation. During this time, she was also lead singer, KK JUGGY, with Sydney outfit Machine Gun Fellatio, and from 2006 - 2008 she was ring mistress for Circus Oz. In 2010 Christa and her father, Dick Hughes, released the album 21st Century Blues. A documentary by Brendan Young has been made about her family's life.
