20.01.2022 Society for Conservation Biology Social Science Working Group Twitter Conference The Social Science Working Group (SSWG) of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) is a global community of conservation scientists and practitioners. SSWG catalyses forums and mechanisms for information exchange, promotes dialogue and debate, shares career opportunities and builds social science capacity among conservation practitioners. 18.01.2022 WANT A BETTER FUTURE? Then up the ante on community engagement and decision making Opening out and digging deep When we come together in facilitated meetings, citizens’ assemblies or community engagement ‘consultations’, often only certain voices are heard; perhaps the loudest, the majority, the ‘community leader’, or the voices the facilitator favours. Other voices at the margins that may differ from the majority or have conflicting views, go unheard. However, including all...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Mistra Environmental Communication - Reframing Communication for Sustainability Mistra Environmental Communication is a 4-year international research program (2020-2023) funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research (Mistra). The program aims to mainstream an advanced and inclusive understanding of environmental communication in research, policy and practice in order to effectively support sustainability transformations. It draws on a transdisciplinary... approach that involves researchers from diverse disciplines at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala University, Lund University, Borås University, University of the Sunshine Coast, Charles University Prague, and University of Texas as well as a wide range of societal actors to harness existing thinking, co-develop new insights and approaches and translate these into communication practice. The SRC at the University of the Sunshine Coast is leading the work package entitled Science and knowledge co-production within the Mistra program. This work package aims to examine the capability of environmental communication embodied in knowledge co-production to support development, adaptation and implementation of actions in complex and urgent situations and to enable transition towards sustainable futures. A number of cases will be explored, namely 1) Carbon farming in Australia and Sweden; 2) Bushfires in Australia and Sweden 3) Non-formal education for sustainable development in Vietnam and Sweden 4) Forestry and bio-economy in Sweden. Key societal partners involved in the work package include Green Collar Australia, MiljöMatematik Malmö AB, Organic Farmers’ Association in Uppland (Uppodlarna), Hanoi Innovative Learning Lab, Swedish Forest Agency, Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF) and Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen). 15.01.2022 Dr Tom Wegener elected to Noosa Shire Council Tom has been elected to Noosa Shire Council after being awarded a PhD from the SRC, University of the Sunshine Coast in 2019. Tom’s research was based around the sustainability of small manufacturing in Australia. Tom used his findings as the foundation of his campaign to bring sustainability and resilience to the Noosa environment and economy. With the Coronavirus restrictions, Tom’s research became especially relevant because..., while tourism declined, local micro-manufactures blossomed, along with small agriculture businesses. 92% of businesses in Noosa have less than 5 employees and most are sole traders. These businesses can adapt quickly to changing conditions and can respond to opportunities. Tom will lead Noosa towards maintaining Noosa’s unique natural environment while facilitating local business in the new, post COVID-19 world. See more
