25.01.2022 This is great news indeed. The retailers complaining about not having enough time to prepare need to suck it up and just get on with it. The speed of change demonstrated with COVID shows that change can and must happen much faster than the laggards trying to avoid getting with the program have expressed as being possible in the past. Given that it's mid-September now, "early 2021" isn't that far away and I say it can't come quick enough when it comes to important changes like getting rid of single-use plastic cutlery and straws.

22.01.2022 Go Young Henrys! These guys are Inner West business champions showing great leadership and doing great things to help address their carbon and ecological footprints. Also nice work by the UTS Climate Change Cluster - can't forget the scientists!

21.01.2022 There's been a commonly held understanding for some time that the younger generations in the workforce highly value being engaged in work for an employer that has genuine sustainability concerns within the core values of the organisation. The write up from this survey has reinforced that, but what I found particularly interesting was how widely distributed this preference was spread across all ages in the workforce. Businesses that want to attract and retain the best workers really need to ensure that they are taking every step to optimise their environmental management and their corporate social responsibility programs. If you need assistance with this please contact Sydney Sustainability Centre and we can certainly help!

20.01.2022 It's nice to be able to share a positive development from 2020!

18.01.2022 "Every 10,000 tonnes of waste that is recovered, reused, repurposed or recycled creates 9.2 jobs, compared with just 2.4 jobs if that material is sent to landfill or exported."

18.01.2022 "Australia's Reserve Bank has endorsed a warning that unless international climate policies are made drastically more ambitious, the disruption under the trajectory of climate change will cause global GDP to fall by 25 per cent by 2100." What is so confusing about that? Why does the Australian Coalition Government have so much trouble with this?

17.01.2022 I can't wait to see Atlassian's new building, and then to see many more like it replacing the unsustainable building stock whenever the opportunity arises. it takes responsible corporate leaders like Atlassian to push the trend.

15.01.2022 At last the market mechanisms are being triggered by changes in shareholder expectations. If carbon-intensive companies aren't getting the message yet then they must have the eyes closed and their fingers in their ears!

13.01.2022 We can't see this current covid period as the new normal. The new normal is still to be designed, implemented and refined. Please engage as we need your voice.

11.01.2022 As this article reports, "The survey also found that two in five Australian consumers would be willing to pay more for ethical and sustainable products, while younger consumers appear to be more sustainably-minded with 46 per cent of shoppers under-30s, compared to 34 per cent of over-50s", so change - progress - is coming *no matter what*. As the younger generations coming through are increasing their representation in the pool of consumers we are being presented with the mandate to produce more sustainably, factoring in environmental and social impacts, and not just economic considerations.

10.01.2022 This is great news from Proctor and Gamble but we need it to happen sooner than 2030. Just between you and me and the gate post, I'm guessing that once they're under way with this initiative they'll end up hitting their 100% recyclable packaging target a lot sooner than 2030.

10.01.2022 This is a great pivot away from simply being an energy provider and it helps move AGL into an energy related company for the future, including potentially being able to utilise electric vehicle battery storage for decentralised grid connected storage. I think, ultimately, options like this will prove to be hugely popular although it may be more in the share model to keep ongoing costs down that it will be more popular. For example, in an apartment building you would not need ...a fast charger for every electric vehicle and that efficiency for shared infrastructure will make a huge difference in pricing. I'm curious: 1. would you consider putting up your hand for a deal like this at approx $15,000 per year? 2. If not, how cheap would it have to come down to before you'd get rid of your car and sign up to an electric vehicle deal like this? 3. If you were keen at whatever level it might settle at, would that be enough for you to lock yourself in as a customer of AGL given its overall position on fossil fuels and climate and a complete transition to clean renewable energy? 07.01.2022 Holy cow! These are some seriously lofty innovation goals that IBM have set for themselves. It's hard to imagine that they could hit any, particularly all five but hey - they've put it out there in the public domain so presumably they have a few cards up their sleeves! I hope they succeed cause these would be staggering significant steps forward.

06.01.2022 This is a great little piece from the wonderful The Ethics Centre about aligning your business with your values.

05.01.2022 CO2 levels in the atmosphere Weekly averages 5 September 2020: 411.59 ppm This time last year: 408.82 ppm... 10 years ago: 387.59 ppm Pre-industrial base: 280 Safe level: 350 Atmospheric CO2 reading from Mauna Loa, Hawaii (part per million). Source: NOAA-ESRL Scientists have warned for more than a decade that concentrations of more than 450ppm risk triggering extreme weather events and temperature rises as high as 2C, beyond which the effects of global heating are likely to become catastrophic and irreversible. 05.01.2022 Despite the Federal Government stymying the rapid expansion of renewable energy technologies in Australia, whether that's for ideological, political or self-interested reasons, the rest of the country is increasingly getting on board. Liberal and Labor state governments alike plus the corporate sector are pivoting to invest now. Private households are piling on and even strata bodies are starting to buy in as well. Here at Sydney Sustainability Centre we'll be installing solar and batteries as soon our ancient, leaky tile roof is replaced and we can't wait for it to happen! Once we have it on you'll be most welcome to come and have a look at the whole system and the technical analytics and ask all the questions you like!
