24.01.2022 If you ever wanted to see passive water harvesting in action, heres a video I took in our garden during some drought breaking heavy rain (yay!) a few months ba...ck. The garden is a bit messy and the video is a bit homely and daggy, but hopefully gives a useful overview of the things you can do in a suburban garden. 24.01.2022 500 Trees planted over the past 2 days in 3 plots on one ridge. The objective of the 3 planting sites is to encourage recharge points in the landscape for water... to enter. To speed up succession we deep ripped the 3 sites with a non inversion plow #Yeomansplow and planted mixed species of Eucalyptus, Acacia and casuarina and guarding the trees while establishing are the www.plantingsystemsaustralia.com.au 400mm high Pioneer guards in black. We have been having great success with the black guards with all plants from apples trees, to oak trees and Australian natives. Here we are using black to simulate a forest canopy encouraging trees to shoot up for the light. These recharge points will allow water to enter the ground water system and put water back where it belongs ( in the soil) and not running out to sea in short sharp rainfall events. See more

This Lilly Pilliy will need ext...ra height to grow up to be a large tree. Currently it has a Pioneer Guard (400m high the smallest guard in he range) it must move up to a All Rounder guard 600mm ( tallest of the triguard range) See more
22.01.2022 ***!UPDATES! Plots available until APRIL 2021 minimum, 100m squared minimum space!*** THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT SO FAR :) Dear people of the Inner North! ... We are seeking backyard space for our urban farming project! We are Inner North Urban Farm, a network of market garden plots in the inner north of Canberra. We are looking for plots that: - Are ideally 15m square or more with direct sunlight - Have an accessible water source - Are easily accessible by vehicles (essential for set up and harvest) - Are located in the inner north suburbs of Canberra - Can be used as a minimum until ****April 2021**** If you have a space that sounds like this and would like to be a part of it, please get in touch with us at [email protected]. READ ON TO HEAR MORE ABOUT WHO WE ARE :) WHO ARE WE AND WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? We are three inner north residents with skills, knowledge and passion for growing and a strong belief in the power of community. We are convinced that urban agriculture is a necessary part in taking action on threats to food security like those we have recently seen with Covid-19, the bushfires and can expect to see more of with the climate crisis. We would provide seasonal, nutritious and accessible fresh vegetables while also creating worthwhile employment for young people from all backgrounds and experiences who want to farm. We also know that spending time in gardens does wonders for our mental and emotional wellbeing, and aim to provide these opportunities for workers, landholders and the broader community. Were inspired by the urban farms already established and enriching communities and their soil. (We recommend checking out FarmitForward, Blue Mountains and Strettle Street Market Garden, Melbourne to get an idea of scale and models). We would like to make this a reality for you, our inner north community! WHY FARM ON RESIDENTIAL LAND IN URBAN AREAS? Farming on residential land is a tried and tested model used successfully for a number of urban farming projects. It means that young growers can start farming without the unrealistic expense of buying land. (We know this is important as found by the ABS, the overwhelming majority of farmers in this country are over 56, male and farming wheat or livestock.) Urban farming makes a vital resource of land which may be otherwise under-used. There are a huge range of proven social and environmental benefits of farming on residential land. It dramatically reduces food miles, improves soil health, fosters meaningful connection between farmers and eaters, doesnt demand large machinery and supports low carbon intensive methods of agriculture. HOW DOES IT WORK FOR LANDHOLDERS? As a landholder it means you are willing to have us plant, maintain and harvest crops on your land. We will negotiate a schedule that works for both us as farmers and you as a landholder. We respect the privacy and property of landholders and would enter a lease agreement which defines the conditions of the use of the land. You will get a weekly box of veggies from your land and other participants in exchange for usage of your land. You will also get the opportunity to work with us at working bees, learn about gardening and be engaged in yet another vibrant pocket of our Inner North community. As a landholder you will not only be indispensable for us as growers but for our Inner North community in building a local food system that is resilient to global changes and challenges that threaten food security. Youd be doing a service to our community, us as young growers and hopefully to yourselves! HOW WILL THE PLOTS LOOK? We use a common market gardening layout consisting of intensively planted rows which are 75cm wide with 25cm wide walkways in between. These beds are planted out with various annual vegetables which are chosen to work with the natural conditions of each site. Some beds may have poly tunnels or trellises depending on what is grown. WHAT GROWING METHODS WILL BE USED? We use a no-dig garden method which involves stacking layers of organic materials on top of each other to form rich growing material. Not only is this method great for giving beneficial microorganisms the best chance to thrive, the growing material can be placed on top of the existing surface and removed and relocated if needed. We practise chemical free farming for the health of soil, humans and all the forms of life connected to the growing process. We use a range of techniques drawn from permaculture, organic gardening and traditional market gardening. We source our inputs such as compost from local sources including our very own Winnecke Compost Station and Lantasia Compost from Bungendore. We use pre-loved equipment and materials where possible. If you would like to offer land for this project (or would like to support us in another way) please email us at [email protected]

22.01.2022 Maybe the best way to start is to simply ask each of you about the purpose of your life's work. MOLLISON: I'm a very simple person. All I want to do is regree...n the earth. That's what I work on all the time. JACKSON: For me, the purpose is to save soils, to get off the fossil fuel nipple, to quit introducing those chemicals into the environment that our tissues have not evolved within effect, to run agriculture on sunlight. FUKUOKA: Part of my purpose is to create a society where no one has to do anything. I beg your pardon? FUKUOKA: [Draws a picture of a man sleeping under a tree]: This is a natural farmer, sleeping in the sunshine. He does no fertilizing, no plowing, no weedingalmost no work. You could say I have been sleeping for 40 years, yet my yields are as high as those of the farmer who works all the time. Fukuoka-san, could you briefly explain the difference between your natural farming method and conventional farming? FUKUOKA: Natural and scientific farming are diametrically opposed. One seeks to approach closer to nature, the other to move farther away. Scientific research discriminates, breaks down, and analyzes, so by definition scientific knowledge is fragmented and incomplete. But nature is an indivisible whole. There is no starting point or destination, only an endless flux. To learn from nature, you must get rid of your preconceptions, your analyses, your intellectual distinctions. Make the inside of your head empty. Do not think anything. Become a foolish man. Be like the baby who sees everything at once, holistically. Then you can understand nature and instinctively understand what needs to be doneand what must not be donein order to work in harmony with its processes. One problem, though: To do natural farming, a person must know what unaltered nature is. People misunderstand nature by looking at the imitation nature people have created. You cannot be a natural farmer by abandoning nature after it has been altered. Instead, you have to carefully select seed and determine when, where, and how to grow it but only after first examining the land and the real nature of an area. Bill, do you think Fukuoka's type of natural farming is included in permaculture? MOLLISON: It's not only included but welcomed. Actually, until Fukuoka wrote The One-Straw Revolution, I had a mind set against all grain farming, so I didn't include any references to it in my first book, Permaculture One. Now I know that the approaches of both these other gentlemen fit naturally into the permaculture framework. Indeed, Fukuoka-san and I are basically the same person. Fragment of the triple interview, between the notable Masanobu Fukuoka, Wes Jackson and Bill Mollison. During the 2nd International Permaculture Conference, in the United States of America in 1987. https://www.motherearthnews.com//ecological-farming-zmaz87

16.01.2022 Many hands make light work was certainly the case at our working bee today. Thanks to everyone who turned up. We planted fig, golden locust and june berry trees.... The mulberry and goji trees were pruned. We chopped and dropped a lot of our green manure and weeds creating a mulch layer. We gave all berms a good water and spread some rock dust. During a short break Brooke from Capital Scraps Composting shared information about her social enterprise that aims to divert household kitchen scraps from landfill throughout Canberra. We are very excited that Capital Scraps will be installing a new composter at the Commons. At a mini working bee on Wednesday, six crab apples were planted along the bike path to the shops to act as a windbreak for the Commons. A productive week for the Commons. The next working bee is on Sunday 6 September, the first spring bee so were looking forward to some planting and other fun activities.

03.01.2022 There was a farmer who grew excellent quality wheat and every season he won the award for the best grown in his county. One year a reporter from the local newsp...aper interviewed the farmer and learned that each Spring the man shared his seed with his neighbors so that they too could plant it in their fields... How can you afford to share your best wheat seed with your neighbors when they are entering their crops in the competition with yours?" the reporter asked.... Why thats very simple, the farmer explained... "The wind picks up pollen from the developing wheat and carries it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior wheat, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of all the wheat, including mine. If I am to grow good wheat, I must help my neighbors grow good wheat"... The reporter realized how the farmers explanation also applied to peoples lives in the most fundamental way... Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all... See more

01.01.2022 Regenerative agriculture could accelerate progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by improving livelihoods, enhancing food security an...d improving water quality. Critically, it can help restore the health of our soil, a vitally important outcome given that soil stores more carbon than the world’s biomass and atmosphere combined. Re-carbonising our soils could represent the most powerful shift in farming practice since the introduction of intensive farming systems in the 1950s and 1960s. See more
