16.01.2022 Remember our community survey back in May? Well from that we heard that people want to know more about sustainable practices in their own backyards. So we have received some funding from Alpine Shire Council and Bendigo Bank (thank you!) to run a series of sustainable living skills workshops over the next eight months. The workshops will be Covid-safe, filmed and uploaded on our website for everyone to learn from. They will be run by local people with skills to share and ...will be delivered locally in a low-key format. Now we need to know who we have in the community with a skill they might like to share! Are you someone who can compost, make sourdough from scratch, repair items, make your own beeswax wraps, do some simple DIY home efficiency improvements, or anything else that can be demonstrated and enhances sustainability? We'd love to hear from you. Email Barb at [email protected] and tell us what your skill is and we'll be in touch! If you're someone who wants to learn something, tell us in the comments below what skill you'd love to learn. Skill-share workshops coming to Upper Ovens' communities soon!

13.01.2022 Indigo Power are running their new hot water system community offer again. Register your interest in here https://indigopower.com.au/hot-water/#hot-water-register. Get a great deal on a great product, installed by a local plumber. We've had great reports from the people who installed through this offer last time. These are not the heat pumps that don't work in our area. These are tried and true CO2 systems that work well in the cold and are quiet. Guaranteed to reduce your energy bill if you're replacing a conventional electric hot water system.

10.01.2022 WANT TO KNOW HOW TO FIND AND APPLY FOR GRANTS? Throughout the year, thousands of grant opportunities are available to businesses, community organisations and no...t-for-profit groups and individuals across our region. Over the last few months I’ve worked with successful grant recipients in Indi and grant experts to develop a range of How-to guides and video resources to step you through the process of finding and applying for grants. I’ve also developed Indi Funding Finder, a comprehensive on-line portal providing free access to the widest range of current grants. These tools are designed to help you or your organisation find the right grant and produce a thorough application. To get the most out of these resources I encourage you to join one of my interactive Zoom workshops. You can sign up on my website, where you'll also find How-to videos and downloadable resources: https://www.helenhaines.org/resources/grants Workshop 1: Tuesday, August 18 2:00 4:30pm Workshop 2: Saturday, August 22 10:00am 12:30pm Workshop 3: Tuesday, September 8 10:00am 12:30pm Workshop 4: Tuesday, September 15 6:00 8:30pm #grants #workshops #community #business #arts #IndiCares

09.01.2022 FYI the Inspector-General for Emergency Management is now offering online meetings for communities to share their views and experiences of the 2019-20 Victorian Fire Season. Meetings are focused around geographic communities, however anyone is welcome to join.

07.01.2022 Something to ponder as we travel through COVID19 ... "The resurgence of disposable plastic is an urgent issue that governments need to include, as they plan a recovery from the economic effect of the virus to avoid wasting decades of progress in the global battle against plastic pollution" - OECD #covid19 #plasticspollution #waste

06.01.2022 SUO has recently surveyed candidates for the upcoming Alpine Shire Council Election. The questions aim to better understand what environmental and sustainability issues motivate these candidates. With 13 people vying for 7 council spots, SUO believes it is essential that our community know what environmental issues they will be prioritizing. An informed community is an empowered community. Now that the tough questions have been asked, have a look to see their responses. http://bit.ly/SUO-Survey-responses Make your vote count towards improved sustainability in our area.

04.01.2022 Good to see diversity in the industry.

04.01.2022 Do you have a dam on your property? Healthy farm dams can provide higher quality drinking water for livestock, improve your farm’s productivity and provide habitat for a wide variety of native wildlife. Check out this free webinar if you have a Dam that needs a health check.

02.01.2022 Sustainable Upper Ovens understands that many people in our communities are doing it tough right now. We had bushfires in January, followed by Covid-19 restrictions, and many people may be anxious and stressed. We’re starting to think forward and prepare for when we can start to recover. It’s important to make sure we do everything possible to come back in a positive way. Sustainable Upper Ovens is here to help us all lead more sustainable lives in a practical way. As r...ecovery projects start up, we want to ensure that our sustainability priorities are restorative and meet community expectations. We appreciate that people don’t want long surveys and questionnaires right now, so we’ve put together a super short poll. It’s just one question with a few tick boxes, and it will take less than two minutes. Please share it on your own Facebook page or email it to people that don’t use Facebook. https://surveyhero.com/c/99dfc596. Your constructive ideas and feedback will help us to create projects that can build a stronger and more sustainable region in the Upper Ovens area. We’re also interested in uplifting community stories. Let us know how you have been affected by the January fires and Covid-19, and what you’ve been doing to keep things going: Growing vegies, keeping chooks, repairing and mending, foraging, baking, sharing with your community, trying to buy local, etc, and whether you will continue doing these things beyond the current crisis. Please email [email protected] and we will compile your stories to share more broadly. Names can be removed if you prefer. We look forward to hearing from you.
