25.01.2022 Its time to launch into Sustainaburbia again! Heres what weve been up to over the last 10 months or so!

25.01.2022 Finally some photos have turned up from our mammoth home open. We had 450 people visit last weekend (plus three more yesterday and a couple of phone calls (?) and we loved every minute of it!

24.01.2022 I have such a fantastic job. Here we are doing our recycling thing at the show today. Love Earth Carers!

23.01.2022 Have reusables. Will travel (and feel more than a little guilty about our air miles).

22.01.2022 Its been a year since we upgraded the PV system, so I crunched the numbers.

22.01.2022 We really are trying! After day 2 we realised that the resort gives us four plastic water bottles each day. They have respected our wishes and were happy to boil the kettle a few times a day to top up our reusables. Were here to respect and adore nature!

21.01.2022 Dehydrating day

21.01.2022 Every spring I fall back in love with this bike!

21.01.2022 This is what Ads has been working on this year. Its the Great Cocky Count Report which was released last week. The bad news is that the species has declined by around 10% for the last 7 years and the trend this year is the same. The good news is that a few weeks ago he checked out some nesting hollows near Badgingarra and found that in that particular area the breeding rate increased by 25% thanks largely to artificial hollows. http://www.birdlife.org.au//southwe/publications-and-forms

20.01.2022 Hi Folks, Tomorrow I will be at the Childrens Fiesta making bees wax sandwich wraps for Hilton Primary P&C. No more glad wrap! Wraps are $6 each, all welcome! https://www.facebook.com/events/148441662176751/

20.01.2022 Its getting very frugiferous around here. We have loads of apples (Anna and Dorset Gold) but they bruise so easily that they cant leave the house. So were having lots of apple crumble! And I got an early Xmas present, a Vacola dehydrator. So the next job is to dry some apple rings.

18.01.2022 Weve got a few bananas on the way (250 odd), plenty of smoothies for summer.

16.01.2022 Home made lip balm made from our Hilton Harvest olive oil, Ecoburbia bees wax and honey. I poured it into an old lip balm container and it works a treat. It goes up and down like anything!

16.01.2022 What's happening in the garden: Shade sail up Harvesting artichokes galore, boysenberries, plums, beetroots, carrots, garlic and spuds... Planted beans (bush and climbing), tomatoes, eggplants, zucchini, basil Coming along: almonds, apples, peaches, bananas Not happening: olives (most fruit aborted), mango (having a year off?), Macadamia , paw paw (dead), avocado (sick) Nathan style!

16.01.2022 Ive just done the annual bamboo harvest. Six good stakes of 2 metres, not bad considering they dont get much water. This one is B. ventricosa or Buddhas Belly. Ill leave the stakes to dry for a few months and theyll be great for tomatoes and beans.

15.01.2022 My wonderful sister and I have coordinated the legendary Twilight Fair for Hilton Harvest Community Garden for the past 3 years. Good times to be sure. Were meeting tonight to hand over the baton to the next generation of super enthusiastic, go getter, community peeps. Good luck! Just for fun, this was our guiding planning document for our first year. Weve come a long way!

14.01.2022 First ever plums. So sweet!

14.01.2022 Ok. Yup. Ads was right when he said we should thin out the plums! I feel its going to be a big plum jam year!

14.01.2022 Aah! Beginners mistake x2. 1. I wasnt organised enough this year to get my own seeds in. 2. I bought seedlings *before* I prepared the soil. That was a week ago and now Ive got a cold and its too hot to garden. So these seedling will have to wait at least another few days before they find their new home. Oops.

11.01.2022 40 degree days like today make me feel so grateful for this majestic tree in out garden. Our garden is cool and shady - well cooler than if it were in the merciless sun. More trees please!

11.01.2022 Thanks everyone for visiting Sustainaburbia today. We had a gorgeous day and really enjoyed showing people around. We were too in the moment chatting to everyone that we did not take a single photo! But we will keep lovely memories. And we raised a goodly amount for Hilton Harvest. Thanks!

10.01.2022 Ok. Yup. Ads was right when he said we should thin out the plums! I feel it's going to be a big plum jam year!

08.01.2022 Todays post about our Christmas tree upgrade. UPGRADE!? Yes. And we dont feel guilty about it. Merry Christmas everyone!

08.01.2022 First ever peaches! Delish!

08.01.2022 These little lettuces have been fantastic but weve just had our first warm day of 30 ish degrees. Soon the lettuce will be bitter as it starts to make seeds which I will collect to sew next autumn. I like to acknowledge the change in season. Who knows what Noongar season we are in now?

07.01.2022 This is my friend Sasha Wray who works super hard at Hilton Harvest. She runs an intergenerational gardening group each week. Sasha has elders from aged care, mums and bubs, school and child care groups visit to enjoy nature and simple human company together. What a fantastic program! Congrats Sasha!

07.01.2022 This is a catch up post! I did my PDC back in July and have finally put this together. It was a nice process to reflect on what I learned, what weve done since and what were going to pursue now. http://sustainaburb.blogspot.com.au//amy-what-is-permacult

06.01.2022 Tea for two! Ads is away and the great thing about having a little veggie patch is thst you can just harvest as and when you need it. Yum.

05.01.2022 Would love to get a composting loo! "The WA Health Department has approved more than 30 different models of composting toilets for household use"

05.01.2022 Netted! This is the only way to keep fruit fly (med fly) away from soft fruit in Perth. Weve netted the trees at Hilton Harvest too. Its promising to be a fruity Summer!

05.01.2022 I think were ready!

05.01.2022 Rubharb fizz bottling day!

04.01.2022 Egg number 999 for the year. there is a milestone looming in this household!

04.01.2022 Broody chook solution

03.01.2022 Hi friends, this is the most fun thing I do at work! We still have a couple of places left on the Earth Cares Course if you fancy joining me to learn about all things waste and how to avoid it (composting, landfill tour, decluttering, recycling, food waste..... does it get any better?!)

01.01.2022 This is one reason I love my job - I get to meet awesome people. Karen Davis and Cass Schmitt are really passionate about opposing the potential nuclear waste dump in SA. I am too and thanks to them respectfully inviting us to be in this picture I can add my voice in opposition too. Thanks women!

01.01.2022 Its a chicken party! This little section of the chook yard has been sectioned off to grow weeds...and now its open! The girls love it!
