23.01.2022 This #IWD2020 we recognise the women across Australia and the Pacific who have been integral to our success. Gender is a particularly relevant issue in development across the Pacific, and we’re thankful for the opportunities we’ve had to investigate the challenges facing women in our region, improve understanding about gender equality, and celebrate women’s achievements. We also recognise the contribution of the talented team of women who work at Sustineo: @Nicky Thatcher who... has been integral to growing Sustineo from a small start-up to a highly successful research consultancy firm. @Asenati Liki, our resident gender specialist, for her deep affinity for women’s issues in the Pacific, and research acumen on a host of project topics ranging from Pacific labour mobility, to graduate outcomes in Fiji’s higher education sector, to civic knowledge and citizenship engagement in the Solomon Islands. @Minkyung Sul our indefatigable Business Manager and finance whizz @Samia Goudie a proud Bundjalung woman, an accomplished researcher, evaluator, educator, artist and community development specialist, who has worked in Aboriginal health and community wellbeing for over three decades and is Principal Partner and co-owner with Sustineo of Supply Nation registered Proper Business Consulting P/L @Katja Mikhaolovich @Nicole Sweaney @Hanna Kurani who bring highly tuned research, stats and data analysis skills to our project work, along with so many others from our international network of research associates. Without you all we wouldn’t be where we are today! We look forward to many more years of meaningful and impactful work across the Pacific, led by you - the women who make Sustineo great. #EachforEqual #IWD2020 See more

23.01.2022 Tom has been doing some shopping at various Vinnies stores for warm things in preparation for the #CEOSleepoutAU tonight. Looks like he is pretty well stocked up. Not sure about those yellow duck slippers though... #ceosleepout Vinnies CEO Sleepout

22.01.2022 At Sustineo, we see National Reconciliation Week as an important opportunity to bring together Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to celebrate what has been achieved in the pursuit of reconciliation, but also recognise what still remains to be done. As reflected by the 2020 National Reconciliation Week theme, we are In this Together. Reconciliation is an on-going process and in Australia there is still a long way to go. While the recent destruction of the 46,000-year...-old Juukan Gorge Rockshelters ancestral site of the Puutu Kunti Kurrama traditional owners in the Pilbara region provides a stark reminder of this, there is a lot that individuals, organisations and governments alike can (and need) to do. National Reconciliation Week reminds us to acknowledge this, but also serves to encourage learning for all Australians about the histories, cultures, stories and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. At Sustineo, we are proud to have always been champions of diversity, respect, and cultural understanding. On this #ReconciliationDayCBR, join us in reflecting on and embracing reconciliation and all it can mean. 22.01.2022 During these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to check in with your own #mentalwellbeing and the well wellbeing of those around you. Today is national #RUOK? Day. Take the time to check in with friends, family, colleagues and members in the community. While some of us may be isolated, it’s important to remember that we are not alone! For more information on how to ask are you ok? and to how to keep the conversation going, visit: https://www.ruok.org.au/

21.01.2022 Our colleagues at the Fiji Higher Education Commission are live on Facebook giving important background on the the Graduate Outcomes Survey. A very informative discussion which clearly outlines the background, eligibility, and the broader contribution of the survey towards improving the higher education in Fiji.

20.01.2022 This week marks the Global Week to #Act4SDGs. It is a joint call to action for everyone to commit to make this a turning point for people and planet and put the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the heart of our development focus over the next 10 years, importantly including within COVID-19 recovery plans. #Sustainabledevelopment is at the heart of Sustineo’s work and company ethos. It is embedded in our organisational mission of creating and supporting positive and su...stainable social, economic and environmental impact and change in Australia, Asia and the Pacific. Since 2015, we have been a proud signatory to the UN Global Compact. Along with many others across government, civil society and private sectors, we are contributing to #globalgoalsweek to raise awareness of the continued need to enhance sustainable development globally. Over the rest of this week, we will be shining a spotlight on particular SDGs and how our project work supports them.

19.01.2022 Sustineo’s Doug Smith and Ellis Mackenzie have touched down in Port Moresby for a socio-economic impact study of Australian Government funded upgrades to the Sepik Highway in East Sepik. First up, we dropped in at Anglo Pacific Research’s (APR) head office in town. APR provide specialised social research services across #PNG and have been fundamental in #partnering with Sustineo to shape our #research approach, ensuring it is contextually appropriate and attuned to local insights. Here is Samuel, Patricia, Doug, Emily and Eimi

Sustineo’s research and advisory work will continue full time for now, although we will moving project delivery and client liaison online to the extent possible using mediums such as Skype and Zoom. Our goal is to keep things as 'norm...al' as possible during these uncertain times. If you need to reach any members of the Sustineo team you can continue do so directly via mobile phone or email. For general enquiries our general email is: [email protected], and our main office line (+61 2 5105 8316) is now redirected to our office mobile. 14.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about severe socio-economic and health impacts across the Indo-Pacific. Among these impacts, are the adverse impacts on food security, particularly among smallholder farmers. To examine the effects of COVID-19 on food systems, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research has supported research to assess food and nutrition security over the first six months of the COVID-19 crisis. This assessment covers five geographies Ind...onesia, Papua New Guinea, seven Pacific Island Countries, The Philippines and Timor-Leste and identifies cross-cutting themes of broader relevance to the Indo-Pacific region. Well done to all the authors involved, including long-term friends of Sustineo Steven Crimp, Lisa Robins and Federico Davila. We know a huge amount of work went into this and that this leading research will be important for helping to #buildbackbetter to achieve more effective, resilient and sustainable food systems.

13.01.2022 The COVID-19 crisis has had deep and far reaching impacts on many in Australia and around the globe, particularly for already vulnerable groups. One of the ways that these impacts will be realised in the context of Australia is through increased #homelessness. The Vinnies Australia #CEOSleepoutAU is in its 15th year. The one-night event taking place on one of the longest nights of the year provides important funds for the year-round work of Vinnies to support the many Aus...tralians who are experiencing homelessness and people at risk of homelessness. At Sustineo we are proud that our CEO, Tom Sloan, is supporting this cause and taking place in his first sleepout tonight. This continues a practice set by Sustineo’s founder, former CEO and current Board Chair, Andrew Rowe, in participating in previous events. Andrew is now continuing important work in the accessible housing space as CEO at Havelock Housing. We know that Tom has been absolutely stoked with the support and generosity that people have shown so far. At the start, he decided that if he reached his stretch target of $2,500, he would commit to sleeping outside in nothing but what he could buy from a Vinnies store (thus missing out on the old sleeping bag and other create comforts) Within 12 hours of making that commitment the stretch target was achieved, with the amount raised currently sitting at $4,507! If you do have the capacity to support, please consider donating. This is a small (but important) contribution to breaking the devastating cycle of homelessness. Otherwise, stay tuned for updates here and via Twitter (@Sustineo_Aust) today and through the night as Tom prepares for a cold winters night outside, for an important cause.

13.01.2022 Yesterday was the 2020 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. On this day, we would like to recognise the traditional knowledge and practices of Indigenous peoples, their connection to land and sea, and acknowledge their ongoing contribution towards sustainable development.

12.01.2022 At Sustineo we are excited to enter the next phase of this multi-year Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research project: Climate Smart Agriculture opportunities for enhanced food production in Papua New Guinea. We are working with ANU Climate Change Institute along with multiple other project partners, including CSIRO, PNG National Agricultural Research Institute, Anglo Pacific Research, PNG National Weather Service Department of Agriculture and Livestock, Fre...sh Produce Development Agency, Climate Change and Development Authority, and The University of Goroka for this important project. The project is focused on facilitating the use of seasonal climate forecasting information to support strategic #foodproduction decisions among farmers in #PNG. Having previously helped inform an evidence-based design for the project, we are thrilled to now be leading the #monitoringandevaluation element of the project, which is designed to help recognise project impacts and facilitate project learning and improvement. To develop our M&E framework, we have engaged with in-country project partners to design data collection activities and reporting protocols to be administered across five case study sites. Undertaking this project during COVID-19 has reiterated the importance of building trusting relationships with in-country partners over the previous years. As such, we look forward to reconnecting with PNG research specialists, PNG National Agricultural Research Institute and Anglo Pacific Research (APR). Equally, we also look forward to forming new partnerships with a range leading PNG and Australian organisations across government, civil society and the private sector involved in this project. Watch this space for more on this project and other work Sustineo is doing in PNG!

11.01.2022 Over the last 12 months, we have been working closely with the Fiji Higher Education Commission (FHEC) on the design and delivery of Fiji’s Graduate Outcome Survey (GOS). As the inaugural Fiji GOS, the project has created the first comprehensive picture of career destinations and employment outcomes for graduates of Fiji’s higher education institutions (HEIs). Covering all of Fiji’s registered higher education institutions (HEI), the project has gathered key information which... can help education institutions improve their programmes, as well as help the FHEC and the government improve the management of the higher education system. The Fiji GOS has been an incredibly rewarding project to be part of and we feel privileged to have had the opportunity to contribute to this type of important, first of its kind work in Fiji. The delivery of the GOS has been a huge effort from the Sustineo team. Watch this space in the coming weeks as we look forward to hopefully seeing the release of project outputs from the FHEC. 11.01.2022 Tomorrow, the Department of Pacific Affairs will be hosting an online webinar on the use of a telephone hotline services to improve information access and dissemination for last year’s Bougainville independence referendum. The webinar, titled Mobile telephones for public messaging: Did the referendum information hotline make a difference? will be on from 4-5pm AEST on Tuesday 27th of October. The webinar will share research findings by the producers of telephone informatio...n hotline that operated for eight weeks just before polling. This service was a national first in the application of a mobile telephone-based platform to deliver public information en masse. The findings of this research have significant potential to shape future efforts to deliver government information directly to citizens. We will be tuning in and look forward to hearing from Dr Amanda Watson and the other panellists as they discuss these important issues. For more information visit: http://dpa.bellschool.anu.edu.au//webinar-mobile-telephone.

11.01.2022 "It’s more of a social survey which captures the perspective and the current status of the recent graduates. It’s going to tell a story, what happened to graduates when they complete their study with a qualification. It’s the first time we are doing it in Fiji and the Fiji Higher Education Commission is planning to have this become an annual exercise." We are proud to be working with the Fiji Higher Education Commission in the design and delivery of the inaugural Fiji Graduat...e Outcomes Survey (GOS). The outcomes of the GOS will help specific higher education institutions improve their programs, while supporting FHEC and the Government of Fiji to better manage the higher education system. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, it is important to recognise that many institutions globally are continuing to do important work to achieve medium and long term benefits for citizens and society. Congratulations to FHEC and their team! #highereducation #highereducationresearch #research #graduateoutcomes #onlinesurvey #fiji

10.01.2022 For Sustineo, the last six months have been challenging, and not surprisingly, have required a lot of change. As an organisation, we have made a purposeful effort to focus on #wellness during this period. This period has provided us with opportunities for meaningful #reflection on how we are responding as an organisation. As part of this, Sustineo’s CEO, Tom Sloan, has compiled an outline of steps we have taken and how staff have been engaged throughout to foster a culture of... wellness in the context of COVID-19. The primary purpose of this piece has been to reflect and discuss these changes as a team, including updating it to include the personal experiences of the team. As a team, we decided that there was value in having these discussions and that it is worth sharing our experience as others too may find value in reading these strategies. While not the original intention behind this post, it is perhaps fitting that we share it during #MentalHealthMonth in Australia. This year’s theme is ‘tune in’ meaning to be aware of what is happening within you, and in the world around you. For Sustineo, this exercise has been a great opportunity to check-in with each other as we continue to adapt to the demands of life in the context of COVID-19.

10.01.2022 Happy 53rd Anniversary to ASEAN! We wish ASEAN well for their work towards their 2020 theme of ‘a Cohesive Journey to Recovery’, an apt reminder of what is needed in the region (and the world) during these challenging times. #ASEAN #ASEANDay #ASEANDAY53 More here: https://sustineo.com.au//sustineo-acknowledges-the-53rd-an

10.01.2022 Just over one year ago, Asenati Liki started with Sustineo as a Senior Researcher... and what a year it has been! In a short time she has contributed to a broad range of our work in the Pacific. Thank you Nati for all your contributions so far! ... #workanniversary #celebratesuccess #thankyou #ukulele

09.01.2022 Most of our posting here focuses on the aspects of our work that we are passionate about being in the field, engaging with our wonderful project partners across the Asia-Pacific region, and sharing how our work contributes to our organisational mission of supporting positive social, economic and environmental change. However, it goes without saying that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make this work. At Sustineo, we are proud to have successfully completed, and f...ully complied with, our second surveillance of the implementation of Sustineo’s Quality Management System against the ISO9001:2015 Standard. This is a great result and demonstrates our commitment to reflecting, learning and improving as an organisation, with a firm commitment to achieving the best outcomes for our clients. Sustineo would like to give a special thanks and acknowledgement to Minkyung Sul, our Business and Quality Manager (and all-round office wiz), for her hard work behind the scenes to develop the processes that enable organisational success! 09.01.2022 You might remember a little while back that Sustineo's CEO, Tom Sloan, was training hard for the 'Run for Femili PNG' as part of the #CanberraTimesMarathonFestival. After some delays due to COVID-19 Tom is running this weekend in the now #virtual event! Yesterday, Tom sat down with Femili PNG to talk about the significance of Femili PNG's work on gender-based violence in PNG, including its relevance to our work at Sustineo, as well as the places and people we work with. He al...so gave an update on how his preparation is going. To get behind Tom and support this important cause, follow the donation link in the post below! #runningforacause #runTomrun

08.01.2022 Sustineo’s Ellis Mackenzie has just completed his first year at Sustineo! Here is a short reflective piece which looks at some of the highlights of his action packed year. 04.01.2022 While the health and economic impacts of #COVID19 continue to be all consuming, it is important to recognise other progress being made to address long term social development issues. Earlier this year, Sustineo finished a project with @aseansecretariat in developing the Capacity Building Roadmap for Consumer Protection 2025. As part of the work undertaken by ASEAN Committee on Consumer Protection (ACCP) on developing a consumer protection capacity development agenda, the Roa...dmap serves as an action plan for capacity building, aimed at supporting ASEAN Members States to deliver world-class levels of consumer policy, institutions and laws for consumers. The outcome of this work has been a collaborative effort. We have had the opportunity to work with Allan Asher and colleagues at Foundation for Effective Markets and Governance (FEMAG) to develop The Roadmap. We would also like to thank the ASEAN Member States, ASEAN Secretariat and those form ASEAN ACCP for their contributions, which have shaped the successful project outputs. #ASEAN #ASEANDAY53

04.01.2022 It has now been just over 12 months since Tom Sloan started in the CEO role at Sustineo and it is safe to say that the last year has brought plenty of challenges and surprises! To mark this milestone, Tom has reflected on his experience in the role and the broader change that has happened over the last 12 months. This forms part one of a two-part series, where Tom reflects on how Sustineo has internally managed two distinctly different periods of our journey; pre and post t...he COVID-19 pandemic. Part one of this blog looks at the transition between CEOs, the continued emphasis on staff engagement and culture, and how we have developed a renewed focus on inclusion, ownership and accountability. While this piece is framed around the growth of the organisation, it also provides a series of lessons that Tom has identified through his personal experience, specifically on the importance of compassion, integrity and transparency for effective leadership. It’s been quite the year, congratulations Tom! #learningorganisation #leadership #reflection

01.01.2022 Sustineo recently finished up an #impactassessment of upgrades to the Sepik Highway in East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG) funded through the PNG-Australia Partnership. Sustineo was engaged by the Transport Sector Support Program to collect baseline data on economic and community activity related to key areas of the Highway, and to document impacts stemming from these upgrades since 2018. The Highway forms a transit route connecting major towns in East and West Sepi...k Provinces, passing through the Sepik Basin where it serves 450,000 people. Smaller towns and remote villages off the highway depend on this road infrastructure for #agriculturallivelihoods, #accesstoeducation and #healthservices and #business opportunities among other uses. By documenting the social and economic changes of the Highway upgrades, we are helping to paint a clearer picture of the impacts that stem from infrastructure projects of this nature. As part of the final stage of this impact assessment and back before travel restrictions were put in place as part of the international response to COVID-19 Sustineo’s Douglas Smith and Ellis Mackenzie finished up a successful trip to East Sepik in February. Read more about their trip and how this project supports development in the region at our blog.

01.01.2022 Amidst the disruption from working remotely, Sustineo would like to take the time to congratulate and acknowledge the efforts of our consultants, Dr Asenati Liki and Ellis Mackenzie who have just celebrated their one-year milestone at Sustineo. In a short time, they have both already made a wonderful contribution to the team. Watch this space for an opportunity to get to know more about Asenati and Ellis and the exciting initiatives they have been working on!
